Why Should I Gain From His Reward?

How Deep the Father's Love for Us
by Stuart Townend

How deep the Father's love for us,
How vast beyond all measure
That He should give His only Son
To make a wretch His treasure

How great the pain of searing loss,
The Father turns His face away
As wounds which mar the chosen One,
Bring many sons to glory

Behold the Man upon a cross,
My sin upon His shoulders
Ashamed I hear my mocking voice,
Call out among the scoffers

It was my sin that left Him there
Until it was accomplished
His dying breath has brought me life
I know that it is finished

I will not boast in anything
No gifts, no power, no wisdom
But I will boast in Jesus Christ
His death and resurrection

Why should I gain from His reward?
I cannot give an answer
But this I know with all my heart
His wounds have paid my ransom

***

But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed. We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all. - Isaiah 53:5-6

For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. - John 3:17

One of my favorite songs, and my favorite new hymn writers! I cannot even begin to fathom the Father's love for me, so undeserving, so far from worthy. And yet I'm worthy through the shed blood of the Lord Jesus Christ--God Himself. Wow!

I think a lot of us around this time of year forget exactly why Jesus was born...to be the sacrificial lamb for us. Beautiful post and reminder! Thanks for sharing.

This song has such a haunting tune.....I always get it stuck in my head. My favorite version is the Irish Tenors.

How true how true. May we live and love others so that his other sheep may come into the fold and know our Savior.

Beautiful hymn. Sometimes I miss hymns. We go to a church with contemporary music now.

OH Judy I love that song.. There's nothing like hearing it come from a dusty, creaking old barn turned chapel sung by 200 kids in the middle of a pine forest.

A song packed with truth. We are nothing and not worthy, yet we are valued and He has done everything.

On a side note, it's amazing to think that this was written less than 20 years ago and will no doubt stand the test of time amongst its contemporaries. I once caught up with the writings of this author when he led the worship on several nights at Keswick Convention.
