Hodgepodging for Mother's Day

My lovely mom at 18 years of age

1. What's a phrase your mother often said to you? If you're a parent, is this something you now say to your own children?

There are two I can think of:

a.  Don't slam the door!
b. Go find something to do or I'll find work for you to do.

And yes, I also said those to our own children, although I know I changed the second one slightly, to: 'Go find something constructive to do.'

2. What is a scent you associate with your mother or your childhood home?

a. Bacon
b. Saturday morning caramel rolls
c. Fresh-mown hay

3. What's an activity you remember always doing with your mother (or someone who was a mother figure in your life)?

I don't actually remember doing many things with my mother. We tended to do our work separately. It was divided up and everyone took care of their own job. I worked in the garden or dusted furniture or set the table or did the dishes. Mom was doing other stuff.

We went to church together, went clothes shopping (which I detested) together, my mom making me try on clothes I hated. I always told her, 'I will know it [item of clothing I want] when I see it.' Unfortunately, I never saw it, but she kept trying. I know it must have been frustrating for her; it certainly was for me. I still hate clothes shopping. And, I will still 'know it when I see it.' I rarely see it.

Oh yes, there was swimming at the lake after the chores were done (milking and haying) on summer evenings. We all loved to go swimming and get a root beer at the root beer stand! Mom also loved picnics, and to this day I love picnics, even if it means just taking a sandwich outdoors on a blanket spread on the yard.

 Oops, not that one.

 Yeah, that's more like it.

4. Flared jeans, maxi dresses, and jumpsuits are 70's fashion trends back this spring. Are you on board? Which trend would you be most inclined to try? For the men...flared corduroys, wide-collared shirts, and floral prints...what say you?

This is an absolutely horrid thought. I hope you're not serious.

 My cute dad, left
My cute mom, victim of horrid fashion in clothing and hair
when she was 19
A friend of the family, right

5. May 6th is Teacher Appreciation Day and also Nurse Appreciation Day. Is there a nurse or teacher  you have especially appreciated along the way? Tell us why?

I don't think I appreciated any teacher at the time, but looking back, I appreciate my fifth grade teacher who, at my parents' first parent-teacher conference, gave my mom a set of multiplication flash cards and said, 'Take these home. Make her memorize them.'  She did, and I did. I am so grateful for that teacher.  If that teacher hadn't insisted that I memorize the multiplication tables, I might still be trying to figure out WHY  7x8=56.  Some things just need to be memorized. It makes life a lot easier.

6. If I came by your house, what would I find on your frig door?

You would find a ton of family photos and magnets from various places - and lots of fingerprints.

7. Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana made her royal entrance on Saturday, May 2nd. On a scale of 1-10, how much attention did you give to all the news coverage? 1=Who's Charlotte? 10=sat glued to the telly, cuppa in hand.

My interest was about 9, but my patience is sitting around waiting was 0, so no, I didn't stay glued to the TV.  I still like the name Alexandra better, but they didn't ask me.  Kate looked way too good to have just given birth, but I can forgive her. I guess. Besides, she has handlers. Real people don't.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

Mr. C. just saw this photo and said,
'What were we, about 14??'

Yeah, it's scary, isn't it!

I enjoyed your post. Makes me smile to remember those days so long ago when I was young growing up!
Happy Mothers Day to you too!

Your mom was a real beauty and I LOVED her outfit with your dad and their friend!! I laughed when I read about your hating to shop for clothes... our mothers could have exchanged horror stories. I STILL say I will know it when I see it... that applies to anything (trouble is you won't see it if you won't go look). LOL!
Loved seeing your photo with your firstborn. Hubby and I were looking through high school annuals this weekend (his birthday) and we couldn't believe how much we've changed! Ha! Have a wonderful day. blessings ~ tanna

Oh my! I loved it all... great post! Didn't realize it was teacher appreciation day and just sent my little Bebe off to school with nothing to show appreciation. Ahhh! Can't do it all no matter how hard I try. :)

Princess Kate's personal hair dresser went to the hospital and fixed her hair before she left... i know that is true because i saw it on line.LOL i was a 9 watching for the name, but online when i thought about it..
the only thing i did with my mother was hanging out clothes and taking them in and canning food, all the process that we went through from picking, snapping and shelling.. she did love picnics but we only did that when we were traveling, we did a lot of traveling from Savannah to here in Bradenton to visit her mom and sister. her idea of a picnic was a loaf of white bread, a small jar of mayo and bologna, with a red checked clothe on a table if we found one and on the hood to the 53 Pontiac if not table. we also had pineapple/mayo sandwiches on picnic

Loved reading your posts and all the family shots, great old photos of your Mom and of you. Because I was born British and still sound like a Brit people keep expecting me to be all excited over the new royal baby. I enjoyed hearing the news of the birth. Charlotte is a sweet little one and I am very happy for her parents and brother George, and have enjoyed the news coverage. My middle name is Alexandra. Happy Mother's Day!

I so look forward to Hodgepodge Wednesday! Joyce gives us such great topics to consider and everyone's answers are always insightful and fun. Your mom was a beautiful 18 year-old! Love the picnic memories and that you have passed on the fun! There is just something so homey and comforting about the smell of bacon cooking. Great post, Judy!

I absolutely love the photo of you and Mr. Cranberry with your first born!! I also loved seeing the pictures of your mom. I think I see some resemblance.

I had to laugh at the question about the scent you associate with your mother. I would have to say -hands down- that I'd have to say PERFUME for my mother. She loves her perfume! When I was a child, I remember being carsick when we'd go to visit my grandparents. As we'd get closer to their house, my dad would smoke one more cigarette (he knew he wouldn't be able to smoke there!) and my mom would start reapplying her perfume (spritz, spritz, spritz, and so on) and the air in that car was stifling!! (My dad eventually quit smoking, but my mom still loves her perfume!)

What a great hodge podge with these sweet photos! Your mother was a beautiful lady and I see the apple doesn't far fall from the tree...that photo of you as a new mom is gorgeous! Ah...sweet memories! I can't smell the scent of lilacs without thinking of my mom. I am sure there are many things I said to my kids that sounded like my mother too. As far as fashion goes, I do like the comeback of the maxi skirts and have several of them. Fun memories...great post!

Such a lovely sweet heartfelt post, your mother was lovely and your father quite dashing too! May you celebrate lots of love and happiness this Mother's Day and every day as well!

I really enjoyed reading all of your answers. I find it strange that as i grow older I can evaluate more of my mom's motives and also the way she worked. It is a different opinion now and a lot more negative for me. Your writing is fun and I like the oops photo to.

Hi Judy,
I just realized I read question #6 wrong! I read IN your fridge door. LOL, help me when people read it. They will think I am one sloppy person. LOL

I love that photo of you and Mr. C and your sweet little boy.

Happy Mother's Day

Those are great scents to remember from your childhood. Love your refrigerator. Really enjoyed all the photos from the past. Happy Mother's Day!

Your Mom is so lovely - those eyes! Loved your thoughts today. I've always loved the prettier fashions of the 70's - embroidered peasant tops, maxi skirts, but the men's fashions were horrible! My Mom said the same things to me! Funny how those 'Mom Sayings' are so universal! Hope you have a good day and Happy Mother's Day! Love the last photo :) xo Karen

Your mom was so pretty, she would have looked great in anything she wore! And you dad was SO cute! I think the phrases me mom said to me were "You will sup sorrow with a LONG spoon" "Just wait till you grow up and have your own children, then you will know". "Stop crying, or I will give you something to cry about".

Lovely pictures and great post

Your mom is so pretty! Yeah we did look a bit younger then, didn't we? It seems hard to adapt to styles that we wore back then when they come around again. Wonder when the shoulder pads will come? We were so much younger back then, but we are so much wiser now, right?!

I enjoyed your answers. That picnic table with snow is a classic. My mom used to say "Good morning glory, rise and shine" to wake me up.

You mom sounded wonderful! I love: "Go find something to do or I'll find work for you to do."

My mom always said springtime in Atlanta is a blessing not a season.

It is said that fashion trends come back a second time but I'm not so sure I want to wear those things again.
I enjoyed seeing photos of your mother and you as a new mother, it's fun to drag out the old photos.
Happy Mother's Day Judy.

This was a fun post, Judy. Your mom was very pretty and dare I say I liked her style. I think you look a lot like her.
Although we say farewell to my mother-in-law this weekend, I will still pay tribute to my mom. Two wonderful women that I will always love. I'm looking at my fridge and thinking..."How boring." Time to get some photos up. :) Have a very Happy Mother's Day, Judy. Hugs, deb

Mr. C is so funny ("What were we, about 14?")! Cute couple! I loved my bellbottoms when I was a kid; couldn't believe it when my mother told me she had worn them when she was a kid the last time they were in style.

One of my mother's sayings (never to me because I was never bored): "Don't say you're bored. Bored people are boring."

Jean | DelightfulRepast.com said...

PS (also to Tanna who commented about shopping for clothes): MY poor mother had to take me shopping for shoes, a dreadful task for someone with AAAA width feet!

A wonderful tribute to moms. I lost my mom at 26. She was my best friend. We spent tons of time together. My memories of her are precious. I am so happy I have them to cherish. It was a privilege to have her as my mom.

Happy Mothers day friend. ENJOY your family

Love your little pic at the end. Such a darling family.
