1. "The cure for anything is salt water-tears, sweat, or the sea." (Isak Dinesan) Would you agree? Of the three, which has 'cured' you most recently?

I don't agree, because I think the cure for so many things is forgiveness. But I suppose if I have to choose one, I'd say that 'sweat' would probably be the most recent cure for...the winter blues that really hit me hard this year. I don't remember getting so sick of winter as fast as I have this year. I am ready for sunshine and warm weather and

GREEN.

 Remembering my favorite month:
On our hill in May of last year

BUT -  Having a nearly impossible project (downsizing, cleaning out 27 years worth of accumulated stuff) is making all the gray days somewhat more tolerable. And, of course, any day that I'm able to actually get outdoors and walk on dry blacktop roads is so encouraging. Walking indoors in a mall is incredibly boring, whereas walking in the neighborhood in the brisk air is so refreshing - and just what I need.

A favorite thing - walking outdoors
Photo from November.

Photo taken from the bottom of our driveway, last week.

2. What's something you can't eat without salt? Do you normally salt your food a lot, a little, or not at all?
I salt my food 'a little.' I could probably eat almost everything without salt, because I'm not a salt lover.

3. Sands of time, bury your head in the sand, built on sand, or draw a line in the sand...which sandy phrase could best be applied to something in your life right now?
Definitely not a 'bury your head in the sand' kind of person, I like reason behind what I think and do, so not 'built on sand,' and I don't enjoy confrontation, so not 'draw a line in the sand.' That leaves 'the sands of time,' and since I've lived a very long time, that one would most likely apply.

4. A favorite book, movie, or song with an island setting or theme?

I loved the movie Island at War about the German occupation of one of the Channel Islands and the book The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, but my first thought when I hear 'island' is Gilligan's Island (a three hour tour a three hour tour). I still remember the theme song and almost all the theme songs from the late 1950's and early 1960's Saturday morning cartoons.

'The biggest show in town is Huckleberry Hound, for all you guys and gals...'

'Yogi Bear is smarter than the average bear, Yogi is always in the ranger's hair...'

See?  Any many more in my repertoire, but I'll spare you.

5. Yesterday-did you run your day or did it run you? How so?

Unlike many days lately, yesterday was very productive, so I'd say that I ran the day. I got lots done, and that is such a good feeling. Both pantries and the dishes cupboards are clean and organized (with lots of extra stuff either ready to go to GoodWill or pitched). I know that the key now is to get it OUT of the house, not let it sit on the library table until I think I really might need it again...sometime...in the next 25 years.

A good friend reminded me of that, btw.  And here we are together at coffee: (and no, neither of us is nearly 6' tall.)

Friends for over 40 years
Deb (l), me (r)

6. You're on an island holiday. Will I most likely find you parked in a beach chair, shopping in town, on the back of a jet ski, or snorkeling off the back of a catamaran?

I would be parked on a beach chair with my Kindle, cell phone, a notebook and pen, a large bottle of water, and one of Carla's lemon bars. :-)

7. What do you think we humans most take for granted?

Especially in the United States, I think we take life for granted.

 "For it was you who formed my inward parts;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
    Wonderful are your works;
that I know very well.
My frame was not hidden from you,
when I was being made in secret,
intricately woven in the depths of the earth.
Your eyes beheld my unformed substance.
In your book were written
all the days that were formed for me,
when none of them as yet existed.
How weighty to me are your thoughts, O God!
How vast is the sum of them!
 I try to count them—they are more than the sand;
I come to the end—I am still with you."
from Psalm 139

Enjoyed your hodge podge. You are sounding very productive, making good use of your gray, cold days. Maybe we could switch places for a week…our sunshine is bright and our days warmer than they should be. #7 is right on. Which is why I try to stop and give thanks for another day. Each one is a treasure.

Thank you, Judy, for this: 🎵 ...a tHrEe hour tour... Oh it's going to be a long day.

Oh dear, getting weary of winter before January is out can not be good. This has been the worst period of time for my emotional health. Trying to hang in there. I told a friend that all I talk about is the weather and all I think about is the Rapture. =D

Oh my! You are gerting a lot accomplished. That is wonderful. Are the things on the library table for the kids to go through?

As I loved Gilligan's Island as a child, I loved the name of this hodgepodge. we have had some nice weather and I was able to walk outside for several days. It is MUCH better than walking inside.

Loved this. We have the same weather but colder. I haven't seen the sun for 10 days. :( Love the 'friend' photo. And the kittens have the exact same face only different colours. What a gorgeous pair. Sending a hug. Keep up those walks. Deb

So many things to like about your answers and photos. Island at War was very good, but lots of troubling things about it (as you would expect since it deals with war)! Your kittens are so sweet. Great answer on #7.

Yes winter can be long and dreary but getting out for a walk on a sunny day certainly helps. Good luck with all the sorting etc. And your cats are just too cute!

I want one of Carla's lemon bars :) We've had lots of rain and cloudy days lately and I've been missing the sunshine. Today thankfully the sun is shining. I agree walking outdoors is way better than walking in a mall. Have a great week :)

You have a lot of cats to fold!

Also...

"I think the cure for so many things is forgiveness."

Amen to that!

Love your hodgepodge! We finally have sunshine after a week of rain and it's wonderful! Glad you got lots accomplished during your time. Happy Wednesday!

Absolutely BEAUTIFUL photos, Judy! Almost makes me feel like I'm right there. Aren't old friendships just the best? Yes, we do take life and the sanctity of it for granted here in America, sad to say.

I enjoyed the Guernsey book too : ) So many British novels I could have mentioned. We are warm and sunny here in SC and I am not missing the icy northeast this year. I kind of thought I might, but nope. Glad you're out and walking. Enjoy your day!

Fun and interesting answers, Judy! I love your answer about the cure for many things being forgiveness. So very true.

I'm weary of winter too. Our car is in the shop (needed an inspection, but a problem developed with the check engine light before we got it in there). This morning my hubby and I were discussing when we might get it back and how we would arrange picking it up. He warned me I might not have it back in time to do my usual Thursday morning grocery run. And it hit me just then, that I simply didn't care about grocery shopping, about driving anywhere, or much of anything else. Just blah! And as Vee said above, being weary of winter in our part of the country when it's only January ... not good!

Judy, Your cats are growing. I love the pictures. You with your friend, wonderful. Good you are out for a walk. It is going to be winter again this evening. Wow the pleasant weekend spoiled me. Blessings, xoxo, Susie

Enjoyed your hodgepodge! YES! I remember all those theme songs too! lol Somehow I have a feeling (though never having lived in the snow I can't be positive!) that being done with the snow and winter in January is a pretty bad thing...hope it goes fast for you. I love the picture of you (I love your hair!) and your lifetime friend. Old, lasting friendships is one of life's best blessings that's for sure. Enjoy your week!

those sweeties in the basket are getting so BIG.. cute as a kitten, or make that two. Love the photos of the barn.. my best friend is still in my life and we met in Dec of 1959. I love beaches above all else, and would be sitting with the same things you had, but never on an island. I don't do water or boats or planes so no way to get to an island. I have very dry eyes, so salt water tears are my most used thing.

I had so much fun reading your Hodgepodge post! Loved seeing the photos of you!

Hi Judy,
I agree, this Winter, all four of us have the blues too. What a sloppy, no fun winter. We only got out to ski a few times. Oh well ... time to THINK SPRING. :-)

I loved Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society.

I like how you answered #7.

Judy, sounds like you have your work cut out for you. If you moved every 3-4 years like me you wouldn't have any stuff because your husband would throw it out. The Mister denies it but I swear he threw out all my summer shoes in the last move. Love your pic of the kitties. Today is the first day in awhile that it hasn't been raining. I went out for a nice walk. Hope you have a great week, dear Judy!

Judy, your days of cleaning out sound just like our days since the new year began. It feels so good to get rid of things we no longer need. It's an ongoing process for us. I do hope the pavement will show itself to you so you can walk outside in the glorious sunshine. ♥

Judy, you never fail to bring delight and beauty into our Hodgepodge world. Thank you for that. We moved after living in a place 33 years and it was a major undertaking and I promised to never let things accumulate like that again. Alas, I'm afraid it is stacking up again. But, you know what I tell myself when I'm tempted to add another item I really don't need? When I'm gone, do I really want my kids to go through all this stuff and laugh and say, "What was she thinking???" Stops me every time. Love and appreciate your random thought. So true.

I've been trying to do a little cleaning out, too. My stuff is sitting in boxes in the hallway...

I hope your cat pictures. That's the "purrfect" use for a laundry hamper, of course :)

I like that 'ran the day' idea!
Lovely photo of you and your friend!

LOL the kitties in the basket...mine would be perched on top of clean laundry trying to get a bit of her shedding in there.

I always enjoy your hodge lodge. You kindness towards cats tells me a lot about who you are also. I keep retelling the story of the mother cat to my wife and always share your photos of the cats.

I answered Gilligan's Island too! LOL I enjoyed reading your answers and love your photos! The two kitties are adorable!

I admire your cleaning out project. I did a little, but still have some to go.

Suzanne McClendon said...

Your furry laundry is adorable. :)

I'm glad that you ran your day rather than it running you. It feels wonderful to get things accomplished.

I watched Gilligan's Island when I was a kid, too, and remember the other shows you mentioned, only I came in on the mid-to-late '60s end of things. :)

Have a blessed week!

Love the Hodge Podge . . .
and the twosome cuddle is delightful.
Clearing out "stuff" is a "feel good " moment for me too.
I find that I am good at the beginning of clearing out,
and not so good at staying with it.
I enjoy seeing wide spaces of sand, like the sand dunes near us
but I do not like the feel of sand on my feet.
Wonderful to see you on your November walk.
Love the stone, weathered wood barn . . .
Now I need to go back and see what I missed . . .

Judy, I just emailed Tommy and Smokey to my husband (he's become quite the cat fancier in recent years). Yep, get those boxes out of the house before you start digging into them!

Empty Nester said...

Those kitties! I had the laundry basket out yesterday and Marcy was exploring it. When I put it away, she had a fit. I brought it right back out, of course. Lesson? Don't put the laundry basket away when babies are around. That includes kitties. LOL You know, every time I think I've purged really well, I realize I haven't. Perhaps a bulldozer? I know what you mean about holding onto things in case I need them in the next 25 years. But I've gotten much better about it now. Lemon bars. Now I want lemon bars.

I always enjoy your pictures so much. Especially the kitty ones on this post. Such cuties! Love your scripture quote! I love that God knows all about my life, even before I was born. He has it all planned and that is alright with me. I don't have to worry because it's in His hands and so am I!

I have been dreaming of paperwhites and cyclamen for weeks! Oh the winter blues! I keep meaning to go find some indoor flowers at our all-year-round garden shop. Our favorite cure!

But the weather is conductive to cleaning and sorting! And it always feels like it starts the year off right. I have my eye on the linen closet and a few kitchen cupboards..... Would also be a good time to paint some trim! Good Luck with the cleaning!

Rose said...

I enjoyed reading your answers...I have to tell you laundry baskets work for grandchildren, too. Lorelei played in mine for the first 6-7 years of her life. Had more fun with it than any toy.

Hi Judy! Playing catch up! Love your memories of the theme songs of the past - crack me up!!

I'm with you in many ways:
*longing for green

*want to be outdoors walking

*working on cleaning, purging, organizing

Best of luck continuing your endeavors. Love the photos and peek into your world as always. ;) xoxo
