August Garden Update

Yes, we got 4 1/2 inches of rain Tuesday night. And this is what it does to our driveway:

But rain also makes the corn grow...popcorn, in this case.

The onions are doing great!

I don't remember if these are the Anaheims or the long red Mercuries. I planted both from seed. Of course the writing on the tag I made has faded away, so I'll have to wait a while and see which ones turn red.

I hope these turn red before blight gets to them!

In case you didn't see the photo of my squash plants in late June

And now, you can't see the carpet. The squash vines completely cover the carpet and one vine has even wandered from the squash patch and is climbing up a tree.

I dug a few hills of potatoes just to see how they were doing, and made French fries from the new potatoes. I knew I shouldn't have done that - it could easily become a habit...one I don't need! But boy were they good!

And this is why I plant a garden...well, except for that little part about having food to eat. :-) I love the beauty of fresh veggies from the garden. It's just so amazing that you can put a few tiny seeds in the soil and in a few months you've got a variety of food!  Isn't God generous! Really. He could have stuck us on an asphalt planet with no color and one kind of food to sustain us (kinda like a people dog food). Instead, He gives us a rainbow of color, many different flavors, textures, and such unbelievable beauty!

  2. I am so very envious of your garden!! Everything looks so wonderful. The corn reminds me of being back home in Nebraska. When I was a kid my parents had a really nice garden and I loved it when the corn got to that stage..I'd go hide in it!

  3. Oh, you have the MOST extraordinary garden!!! Mine needs to see these pictures and take some lessons, because it is truly deficient by comparison!

  4. What a bountiful harvest! We have been dry and hot here most of the summer but most of our garden is doing pretty well. I've not given it as much attention as last year, it's just been too hot to be out much. We're doing some second plantings too see if we can do better when the weather cools a bit in the fall. I love seeing pictures of your garden!!

  5. What a fantastic garden you have! Everything looks so green and healthy. My garden is pretty much done for the summer. I have a few more tomatoes to pick but the actual plants look awful. I don't even remember the last time it rained here. Everything is so dry.

Stopping by from New Friend Friday :)

  6. Love it! And I still think your carpet is super smart. We sure could use some rain here...but hopefully not the driveway destructin' kind :)

  10. I, honestly, just posted a status update on FB about how depressed I was about my garden. We have had horrible weather here and everything is about a month late. The weeds have decended, and it is just completely depressing! You have some great strategies though, might have to steal some! Congrats on a great garden (after my status update I posted this post on FB so people knew how envious I was, hope that was ok).

  11. Ok so you have carpet down, which I am assuming is to stop weeds. Great idea, they are just regular remenants right? I mean I am thinking I could look on craigs list and pick up some free carpet someone is tossing out and cut it to fit the garden? Is that what you did?

  12. I could just come live in your garden!! It's amazing. Wish we lived closer. I'd so love to bring the boys by to see how wonderful it looks.

    Lots of yummy love,

  13. What an amazing bounty you have. And I bet those french fries with your new potatos were delicious! God is indeed generous - I think of all the different flavors and textures of food from sweet grapes to oka (which I love) to all different kinds of squash and melons...oh yes, it could've all been so different. Praise Him!

  14. You are definitely going to have a bounteous harvest, Judy. What will you do with all that squash? I guess all the folks in WI are getting plenty of rain. Low water bills, that's for sure?

  15. I love your garden! Looks amazing. Our squash plants are the same way. We started a little garden in our dogs old kennel. Now the squash, pumpkins, cucumbers are growing up the sides like crazy! LOL Look like you are very blessed. Next year I'll have to plant a larger one. Have a great weekend.
    Blessings,
    Jill

  17. Judy, what a magnificent garden. I can just picture Lionel stalking through it, hiding in the corn or just lounging about!

  18. Wasn't the rain wonderful??!! Your garden still looks great! I did manage to go up the driveway and back down the driveway praying all the way. :D
Thanks for the mini-visit and the wonderful gluten-free cookies.

  19. Thanks for all the nice comments on my garden! Just don't get the idea that it's totally weed free. There is a reason I take mostly detail shots. ;-)

In reality, Lionel values his life too much to walk through the dogs' territory. He mostly spends his days and nights either on my bed or on the window seat next to the open window - so he can smell and feel the fresh breeze and dream of catching birds and bats.

  21. Wow, I've never seen an onion grow! How cool. Your squash and tomatoes are NUTS! I remember helping gather potatoes on my grandmother's farm in Poland. It was hard work, but a lot of fun. She had a big old field of them.

  23. I love all the pictures of fresh vegetation! Keep up posted on the peppers...I would have thought those were Anaheims, since I've never heard of long red Mercuries...I'm curious, so post them when they turn red :)
Love how the squash carpets the carpet now!

  25. What a big onions you have! I really love your garden and I am envious of it. All of your veggies are really doing great. I can’t believe that there are also what you called a perfect garden and that what describe your garden. You are truly a master of gardening.

  26. Thank you, Melanie, but really, I think it's not so much that I'm a good gardener, but that I'm a good carpet layer. LOL

  27. Wow. I love your garden already. After seeing all of those peppers, tomatoes, onions and corns, I wanna build a kitchen near your garden! LOl. Anyway, the rain also made some of my crops a little damaged. But both my peppers and tomatoes are doing fine. Thanks for sharing this post.
