Yes, we got 4 1/2 inches of rain Tuesday night. And this is what it does to our driveway:
But rain also makes the corn grow...popcorn, in this case.
The onions are doing great!
I don't remember if these are the Anaheims or the long red Mercuries. I planted both from seed. Of course the writing on the tag I made has faded away, so I'll have to wait a while and see which ones turn red.
I hope these turn red before blight gets to them!

And now, you can't see the carpet. The squash vines completely cover the carpet and one vine has even wandered from the squash patch and is climbing up a tree.
I dug a few hills of potatoes just to see how they were doing, and made French fries from the new potatoes. I knew I shouldn't have done that - it could easily become a habit...one I don't need! But boy were they good!
And this is why I plant a garden...well, except for that little part about having food to eat. :-) I love the beauty of fresh veggies from the garden. It's just so amazing that you can put a few tiny seeds in the soil and in a few months you've got a variety of food! Isn't God generous! Really. He could have stuck us on an asphalt planet with no color and one kind of food to sustain us (kinda like a people dog food). Instead, He gives us a rainbow of color, many different flavors, textures, and such unbelievable beauty!

ReplyDeleteI am so very envious of your garden!! Everything looks so wonderful. The corn reminds me of being back home in Nebraska. When I was a kid my parents had a really nice garden and I loved it when the corn got to that stage..I'd go hide in it!

ReplyDeleteWhat a bountiful harvest! We have been dry and hot here most of the summer but most of our garden is doing pretty well. I've not given it as much attention as last year, it's just been too hot to be out much. We're doing some second plantings too see if we can do better when the weather cools a bit in the fall. I love seeing pictures of your garden!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fantastic garden you have! Everything looks so green and healthy. My garden is pretty much done for the summer. I have a few more tomatoes to pick but the actual plants look awful. I don't even remember the last time it rained here. Everything is so dry.

I, honestly, just posted a status update on FB about how depressed I was about my garden. We have had horrible weather here and everything is about a month late. The weeds have decended, and it is just completely depressing! You have some great strategies though, might have to steal some! Congrats on a great garden (after my status update I posted this post on FB so people knew how envious I was, hope that was ok).
ReplyDeleteOk so you have carpet down, which I am assuming is to stop weeds. Great idea, they are just regular remenants right? I mean I am thinking I could look on craigs list and pick up some free carpet someone is tossing out and cut it to fit the garden? Is that what you did?

What an amazing bounty you have. And I bet those french fries with your new potatos were delicious! God is indeed generous - I think of all the different flavors and textures of food from sweet grapes to oka (which I love) to all different kinds of squash and melons...oh yes, it could've all been so different. Praise Him!

Now the squash, pumpkins, cucumbers are growing up the sides like crazy! LOL Look like you are very blessed. Next year I'll have to plant a larger one. Have a great weekend.

In reality, Lionel values his life too much to walk through the dogs' territory. He mostly spends his days and nights either on my bed or on the window seat next to the open window - so he can smell and feel the fresh breeze and dream of catching birds and bats.

Wow, I've never seen an onion grow! How cool. Your squash and tomatoes are NUTS! I remember helping gather potatoes on my grandmother's farm in Poland. It was hard work, but a lot of fun. She had a big old field of them.
