Best Sugar Cookies Ever

If I hadn't had that amazing Tornado Birthday Cake to blog about last week, I would have had this recipe up before Valentine's Day. As it is, if you are reading this early, you still have time to make these fantastic cookies to give to family and friends for Valentine's Day.

 The Cookie Decorator

These are the best sugar cookies I've ever eaten. My friend Beth's mother got the recipe from her next-door neighbor years ago. It's definitely a recipe that's stood the test of time. I love them really lemony, so when I made this double batch, I used an entire lemon, peel and all.

Just one of these lemons, not all three. :-)

Mrs. Kennedy's Sugar Cookies:

1 c. butter, 1/2 c. shortening
2 c. sugar
3 eggs
1 lemon, peel and all, cut in chunks and chopt fine in the food processor

Cream butter and sugar. Add eggs and lemon. Mix well.

Add dry ingredients:
6 c. flour (a little less or a little more as needed to make a good dough)
3/4 t. salt
1 1/2 t. baking powder
1 1/2 t. baking soda
1/3 c. milk

Mix well.
Roll out dough on floured countertop to almost 1/4 inch thick.
Cut with cookie cutters. (This was our grandson's favorite part!)
Place on heavy, greased, jellyroll pans.
Bake at 375 degrees for 11 minutes or til ever-so-slightly golden at edges. Do not overbake.
Let cool on pans, then remove.

Oops, I see that someone is going to have a broken heart!
This is the portion that was eaten before we ever got to the decorating part.

  2. Sounds great and what a good helper for a big batch of cookies. You still have a lot of snow but hopefully it will be gone soon. Enjoyed your post on Ironbridge. Did you have time to go to the Victorian Village there? Very interesting too. Happy Valentine's!

  5. I love them!!! And I particularly like a recipe that is not only fun for kids to make, but which doesn't require chilling the dough beforehand (which, of course, makes it still more kid-friendly so they don't get impatient!) ... :)
