Daffodils along Pitt Road in Dorstone, England
What a nice excuse to post my favorite photos of daffodils. Saint David is the patron saint of Wales. On March 1, Saint David's Day is celebrated, with the wearing of the national flower, the cheery daffodil.
I would do my part if my daffodils weren't under two feet of snow. I love knowing that they are blooming somewhere, making the day brighter. They are my all-time favorite flower!

ReplyDeleteI love daffodils too! I love almost all bulb flowers. Our crocus are up and the daylilies and irises are starting to come up. We've got signs of spring here from birds singing to trees budding. It's been nice. I even saw two robins the other day.

ReplyDeleteBTW-my soaps came in on Saturday and I LOVE THEM! I am using the chocolate almond one now. The apple peel one mysteriously disappeared when DoodleBug left--Hmmmm...LOL
I must go out and take some pictures of the daffodils. I wish you could come and visit. There is an area called Wye Mountain nearby that has fields and fields of daffodils. I think we need to check it out and go there when they are all in bloom! It should be sometime soon. They are blooming around the house here.

HAPPY SAINT DAVIES DAY! HURRAH FOR THE GOOD OLD WELSH! But...I thought it was leeks, not daffodils...hmm...am I confusing things? I know in Shakespeare (Henry V my favorite play) they have leeks, but perhaps Shakespeare changed something (yet again)! :) Anyway, as Shakespeare said in his play was that there was a great battle in which David fought in a garden where leeks grew. So, welsh wear a leek to remember it. Maybe that tradition has changed to a daffodil since the 1500's though! ;)

ReplyDeleteNatalya, here's what was on Wikipedia: To celebrate this day, people wear a symbol of either a leek, or daffodil. The leek arises from an occasion when a troop of Welsh were able to distinguish each other from a troop of English enemy dressed in similar fashion by wearing leeks. An alternative emblem developed in recent years is the daffodil. But please, Natalya, if I see you today, do me a favor and wear a daffodil and save the leeks for a salad. ;-)

Oh daffodils!!! Sigh!!! I would love to see daffodils right now!! Even though we don't have two feet of snow, they will not be up for another month and a half. They are so cheery and springy!! When they start to bloom, we don't care what what color they are! Aslong as something is blooming! Every year we plant more in the fall! Lol!

ReplyDeleteJust a little more patience for the Daffodils here. It occasionally escapes me that the daff is a Welsh thing when the leek seems more familiar. It's only when visiting the appropriate Welsh tourist shop that reminders are imprinted in my mind again. Sorry to hear that you are still in the depths of winter. Now I realise why you needed all those logs for the fire.

This may be a kinda silly thought, but I wonder if Christian Bale wore a daffodil yesterday? He's Welsh (and proud of it) and, if you haven't heard, he won the "Best Supporting Actor" Oscar Sunday night. :)
