What is our purpose?

The first question of the Westminster Shorter Catechism asks,
What is the chief end of man?

The answer: (contrary to the little girl who answered, 'His head, of course.')  :-) (and naturally, I think of that every single time!!)

Man's chief end is to glorify God and to enjoy Him forever.

I Cor 10:31 So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.

Psalm 147:11 The LORD delights in those who fear him, who put their hope in his unfailing love.

'All that we call human history—money, poverty, ambition, war, prostitution, classes, empires, slavery—[is] the long terrible story of man trying to find something other than God which will make him happy.'  - C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity

  1. The most simple and best things in life are usually right in front of our faces, unless we are watching tv! ;-) Happy Sunday!

  4. Isn't it interesting that bringing glory to ourselves never really brings glory to ourselves, because no one appreciates it but ourselves. So we really can't enjoy ourselves! But as we glorify God, He appreciates it, and although we don't deserve anything in return, He allows us the privilege of enjoying Him forever. What a privilege!

    Thanks for the exhortation.

  5. A well put together and concise set of verses and statement. It takes years for people to discover what life and the real meaning is all about.
