Amish Barn Raising

 Waiting for another sheet of metal roofing

They say 'Rome wasn't built in a day,' but an Amish barn IS built in a day. With the concrete work being done beforehand, the structure was started early yesterday morning. They don't stop for lunch until the building is framed up, then after lunch the metal sheeting is put on. By the end of the day, the barn is ready for occupancy.




I understood that it was okay for me to take photos because my aim was simply to photograph the procedure, not to photograph faces.

We went to Westby to pick up our hardwood flooring from an Amish cabinet maker and to watch a barn raising. The boys were good travelers. The littlest one took a long morning nap on the drive there. There's nothing like the noise of an engine to lull a child (or me) to sleep!

 This is only a portion of the buggies at the barn raising


 I wonder if the horses know they're Amish horses?


 He does look a bit tired, but later we had a chance to play ball and also visit another Amish barn where the farmer kindly invited the boys to pet the pigs and feed the calves. They enjoyed that!

 It is quite a sight!



I suspect that both the 5 year old and the 8 year old will remember the day they got to watch an Amish barn raising AND got to pet and feed the animals!

    such wonderful memories for the boys. and i would love to see one. i have seen them in movies and pictures but not in real time. i love the first pic and the close up of the buggies.

    We have an Amish community not far away. I love the way they help one another and work together. So many 'lost arts' they know and practice.

    An amazing thing. And I bet that barn doesn't fall any time soon. I believe that society would do well to adopt some of their ways. I always want to take pictures, but am afraid I'll offend them. If I do it from afar I feel like I'm being underhanded.

    Yeah, I wouldn't have taken pictures at all if it hadn't been for the fact that we had permission beforehand. We were there with a guy who is a close friend of that Amish group and we had permission, as long as we didn't get close-ups of faces.

    I'm just amazed that they can build barns in a day. They can't even finish a small house out here in a year!!! :) lol Love all the pictures... the grandsons look like they are having a great time!

    That looks like a very modern barn. I didn't know that Amish lived in your area. I've never seen any Amish people except on TV.

    I'm so glad you posted this Amish Barn Raising & linked to Barn Charm! It's unbelievable how a structure that big can be raised in one day! It would take others MONTHS to build one that size! God bless them for their ethics & all of their hard work!!!

    Beautiful photos!
    Where did they put all the buggy horses? Did they tie them seperately to a fence or run them all together in a field ?

    An Amish barn raising. What I would give to get to see one. I just love the way all the men are up there with their hats on the their buggies are sitting so close by. These are wonderful pictures of a life that is so different from ours. I really loved the post. Thanks so much for taking the time to share all your pictures with us. genie
