Last week, a young friend of ours was on her way to town in her Buick, about 3:30 PM, driving speed limit on a county highway. A one-ton crew cab diesel truck with a trailer pulled out in front of her from a side road. The force of the impact flipped the 8,000 pound truck and buckled it. You can see from the photos above the resulting damage to both vehicles.
Both drivers walked away from the accident.
This was not because of airbags, but because of the weight and sturdiness of their vehicles. As you can see from the photos above, the front of the Buick took the brunt of the impact, leaving the driver unhurt except for a few cuts and bruises.
Today we saw a small car with a license plate that read, 'LESSGAS'.
It's true that a '91 Buick may not be as cool as a new smaller car and probably doesn't get as good gas mileage as some (it gets low 20s on short trips and high 20s on the highway), but when it's your teenager in the car accident, you might be glad it's a sturdy old Buick. The outcome would have been very different if she'd been driving the little car whose license plate read, 'LESSGAS.'
We praise God that our young friend came through this accident virtually unscathed. We also praise Him for advances in technology that resulted in a vehicle that would protect her from this horrific collision. I guess we have to decide between safety and fuel economy. Maybe some day we can have both.

I'm glad all were okay. A miracle, I believe. I think I'll make our daughter learn to drive the old military truck!
ReplyDeleteAs long as everyone walked away ok.. all is good! And yes, they don't make cars like they used to.. could you imagine if she had been driving a mini cooper??

I was walking around a Smart Car in the WM parking lot and thinking this is the cutest thing ever and great on gas. and the next thought was, not on the roads here with all the crazy drivers in big trucks and cars. the little cars work good in places like Europe where all the cars are small, but driving a little car is like riding a motorcycle with a roof on it. I was in a horrible roll over accident 10 years ago, my Jimmy was totaled, and bob said it you had been in another car, you would not be alive.

ReplyDeleteHow scary! I'm glad everyone is okay. Fortunately a lot has been done to improve safety in smaller, fuel-efficient cars. I drive a Prius which the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded the coveted "Top Safety Pick" (along with several other small cars). And it gets 50 mpg. Best car we've ever had.

ReplyDeleteI agree totally! I drive a 98 Grand Marquis that was my Mom's, and I don't plan to replace it. It just feels safer.

I am so glad your friend is OK. It still makes me shake to see car accident photos. I know the only reason I walked away from my car accident was someone was watching out for me. I think so much depends on the car too. I was driving a friend's mini van, If I had been driving my little car, I don't think there would have been walking away.

He would open it and shut it and when it went thump he said it was a great car. If it went tink, he said absolutely not, and called it a tin can. He wanted to know that I would be in a car that was sturdy and could withstand an accident if, God forbid that happened. ReplyDeleteMr. Sweet has always insisted we drive a heavier vehicle. I wanted a cute little BUG, bright red with a vase on the dash for flowers, for years. He didn't say NO...he seldom does....it's just that everytime I mentioned it, he would say, "I love you, honey." and I knew. So I quite mentioning that little red Beatle...and he probably saved my life by saying he didn't like them.

ReplyDeleteMy goodness!! Glad they could walk away from such an accident. I've always thought there is more protection from the larger sturdier type vehicles, also a picture perfect example of God at work!

I recently have been test driving cars and fell in love with a Fiat 500. Oh my goodness! It's the cutest car ever! But my husband said he would worry about me if I drove it, so I didn't get it. I read the safety reports and for its size, it's safe. But if I was going to be hit by a school bus, would I rather be in a Fiat or a Suburban? That's a no brainer. So the search goes on for a safe but cool car.
