Just a quick note to let you all know that after Easter Sunday's post, my blogging and commenting will be sporadic at best next week. The family is coming today - to be here for Easter -  and most of them are spending next week here as well. We will be busy - and enjoying it! Hoping for melting snow and a dry driveway. Right now it's raining like crazy, so we should get rid of some of this snow.

If I get a chance to visit your blogs, I certainly will - but if not, I know you'll understand. It's not often we get to have four of the grandkids with us for a week.

Good Friday. After nearly 2000 years, Christians the world over remember this day in history when Jesus, the perfect, sinless Son of God, went to the Cross to bear the wrath of God for the sins of His people, to rescue us from sin and death.

Luke 23:32-47

"And two others also, who were criminals, were being led away to be put to death with Him. And when they came to the place called The Skull, there they crucified Him and the criminals, one on the right and the other on the left. But Jesus was saying, 'Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.' And they cast lots, dividing up His garments among themselves. and the people stood by, looking on. And even the rulers were sneering at Him, saying, 'He saved others; let Him save Himself if this is the Christ of God, His Chosen One.'

And the soldiers also mocked Him, coming up to Him, offering Him sour wine, and saying, 'If You are the King of the Jews, save Yourself!' Now there was also an inscription above Him, 'THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.' And one of the criminals who were hanged there was hurling abuse at Him, saying, 'Are You not the Christ? And Jesus, crying out with a loud voice, said, 'Father, INTO THY HANDS I COMMIT MY SPIRIT.' And having said this, He breathed His last.

New Scandinavia Lutheran Church Rebuilt

I used to drive past this little church several times a week, and everyone was horrified when we heard that the building had been destroyed by fire. That was in December 2010. It seems that two local young men were out hunting for trouble and money. When they found no money in the church, it angered one of them and he decided to set the place aflame. But they did find trouble. They both ended up in jail...at least for a very short while.

Last year, we were happy to hear that the church decided to rebuild on that same spot out in the country, rather than join another local congregation in town.

After they put on that first structure above the main roof, that cube-shaped thing, and roofed it, Kevin announced that there wouldn't be a spire. 

'They can't not have a spire,' I insisted.

'No, they're not going to put a spire on it. Look. They've already roofed that little square addition.' I know he was just giving me a hard time at this point, but still...

'I don't care if they've already roofed it. I imagine that they're waiting for whomever it was they commissioned to build the the spire. It'll be there. Just wait.'

Seeming ages went by and one day I got a text message from our son saying that he had just driven past New Scandinavia and they have a spire on top.   YEA!!!!!!!!!

Okay. So why was this so important??  a. Because I loved driving past that little church at night and seeing the white Cross shining in the darkness and b. Because it's nice to be right once in a great while.

That little white cross on New Scandinavia Lutheran Church in rural Wisconsin is a testimony to Jesus' death on the Cross -  paying for our sins - and giving forgiveness and new life to all who trust in Him.

Everyone who drives past is reminded, by that simple yet profound symbol.

Vintage Mojonnier Milk Sample Bottles

What am I using them for??

For storing my ground and pulverized botanicals for my soaps!

With a good scrubbing and sterilization, they're just perfect for storage.

These bottles lived in the basement for years before I thought of a good use for them. By the way, for those of you who haven't seen my basement, just suffice it to say that they were in lots of good company. Anyway, some years ago Kevin found these in an old abandoned building that was being demolished. He brings me junk on a regular basis - some of which I'm happy to see, and some of which I don't let past the kitchen door.

'Thanks, Honey, but NO. Please don't bring that any further. No, I mean it. I can smell the mold from here. No, really. I'm sure it's nice, but NO, please...sigh.'

Lest you think that I'm an ungrateful wretch, no, I'm not really. I even let him keep the porcelain men's (please don't ask) antique hospital bedpan in some color that was reminiscent of pale mustard. I'm hoping the color was under the glaze, not on top. But that one isn't stored in the house. It's outdoors somewhere, enjoying the fresh air. thank goodness.

Bloglovin' vs. Feedly - What to do!

Where have I been the past couple days?  Trying to figure out Bloglovin' and Feedly reader, because we've all heard that Google is dropping Google Reader and maybe even GFC on July 1 of this year.

What to do?

They both seem to have pros and cons, of course.

Feedly reader lets me line up all my blogs in a column by title, according to the most recent entries. I like that. I can go to the websites right from there to see the photos and comment. BUT, as far as I can tell, they do a miserable job at making it easy to organize. How to easily categorize. How to unsubscribe, should the need arise. Why don't the icons show a text when I hover over them? They need a good tutorial, one written by a techno geek, perhaps, but then translated for people who don't speak computereze. I haven't seen one yet. Yep, I need Feedly for Dummies!

Bloglovin' lists all the blogs in alphabetical order, not in order of most recent entry. Bloglovin' also doesn't seem to have the pictureless condensed look of Feedly. It only allows me to see about 3 blogs on my monitor at a time. Feedly lets me see 14 at a glance, making it much easier to hunt for a blog. On the other hand, Bloglovin' seems to make so much more sense and is much more intuitive.

I'd sure like to hear what you're planning to do, if you've already switched to something, and what your thoughts are re. Bloglovin' vs. Feedly.

Oh, by the way, the Amish couple, buggy, and horse are inside an old loaf pan that belonged to Kevin's grandpa. What a sturdy old pan! The ends are folded metal. Certainly not like they're made now.

It won't be long now...

By the looks of that roof line, the south wall leaning out, and the boards above buckling, this old barn probably won't stand many years longer.

Not only do I drive past this barn several times a month, but it is in the same neighborhood as the school I attended in first and second grade. At that time, everyone knew his/her neighbors because the kids all attended the same country school. And most of us walked to school - as only the Amish do now.

Souvenirs of Britain - Anglophile Friday

This is the type of souvenir I bring home. I found this tiny ceramic Tey Pottery village (it's about 9 inches long) in a little thrift shop in Thirsk, North Yorkshire, across the street from the butcher shop. I liked it instantly, because it represented an English village, and because it had a heavy, smooth glaze, with no nicks or scratches. And, because it was only a couple £ - which I thought was a good price for something I liked.

I forgot to mention that it has green felt on the bottom.

The little Tey Pottery village isn't the only Tey Pottery out there, I've discovered. They've made several other pottery buildings, their 'Britain in Minature' series. Some of it is very rare. I don't know about this piece. But it doesn't matter. I bought it because I liked it. I suppose I should check it out just in case it's worth 2.2 million dollars or something, like that Chinese bowl bought for $3 at a garage sale!

Skillet Glazed Pork Chops & Beans - Recipe

Skillet Glazed Pork Chops & Beans

I don't know about you, but some days it seems it's tough to think of yet another meal to make for dinner. We've recently had chicken stirfry, beef roast and roasted vegetables, chicken vegetable soup, pepper steak, etc. etc. So I was looking in the freezer to see what was there. Pork chops. What to do with pork chops. Well, in the meantime, I could at least partially thaw them so that they could be cut laterally (giving me four 5/8" thick chops) and put in a baggie with white wine and garlic until I figured out what to do next. That was my first step.

The day got busy, and suddenly it was about a half hour before I wanted to eat dinner - and have something decent for Kevin to eat. So I did what I usually do in those circumstances: GOOGLE. 'pork chops recipe.'  I realize that didn't narrow it down a lot, but after looking through the ingredient list on one of the first entries, I decided to go with it.

Skillet Glazed Pork Chops & Beans Recipe: (With a few modifications, e.g. the beans, the garlic, the wine, the title, etc; I'll explain later)

Anyway, the original recipe for the rub was at BudgetBytesBlog

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

In a small bowl, mix the following:

1/4 c. brown sugar

1/2 t. cayenne

1/2 t. paprika

1/2 t. salt

1/2 t. pepper

Keep in mind that the pork chops had already been marinated for several hours in white wine and garlic.

Remove chops from marinade and pat dry with paper towels.

Rub sugar and spice mixture generously onto both sides of pork chops.

I decided that I wanted beans with these chops, but didn't have any black beans so I used pork & beans  I shudder to think, drained and rinsed thoroughly and drained again. And rinsed thoroughly and drained again. (Yes, at least twice.) Set beans aside.

Melt 2+ T. coconut oil in [my favorite Grandpa Roy] cast iron skillet over medium heat until the oil looks shimmery. At that point, turn the heat down to medium low, lay the pork chops in the skillet and fry them 4-5 minutes on one side. Flip the pork chops over and fry another 4-5 minutes.

Remove chops from skillet and set aside for a minute.

In that same skillet, place the drained beans and pour in any leftover seasoning mix. Use a spatula to mix the beans and oil and seasoning.

Lay the pork chops on top of the beans and place skillet in the preheated oven for about 8-10 minutes. 

It's a good idea to use a meat thermometer so that you don't overcook the pork, but get moist pork chops that are at at least 145 degrees at the middle. The USDA changed the recommendation on pork from 160 to 145.  I think my thermometer read 153 when I tested these chops.

And they were delicious, served with home-canned, unsweetened apple sauce.

Now, if only I knew what to make for dinner tomorrow night. sigh.

NOTE:   Update: Don't use pork & beans. Although they didn't bother Kevin, I had a headache the next morning. No matter how many times you rinse pork & beans, you just can never get the poison out. Next time I will wait until I have beans that haven't been canned in a sauce.

When I was in grade school, 1st or 2nd grade, I think, we used to sing that song. And I think it was when we listened to the Wisconsin Educational Radio Network (now WPR) program, 'Let's Sing!'  I only remembered the first two verses and had to find the others online.

Does anyone else remember this song?

Did anyone else listen to 'Let's Sing!' on the radio?? I think it was only a Wisconsin thing, so...

And yes, my gradeschool is definitely vintage...and no longer used as a school.  I posted about it earlier.

A little worse for wear,
