Vintage Paper of Pins

A Paper of Pins
and the spools of thread
from my great aunt Verna

The scissors belonged to my mom

Boy:
I'll give to you a paper of pins,
For that's the way true love begins,
If you will marry me, me, me,
If you will marry me.

Girl:
I won't accept your paper of pins,
If that's the way true love begins,
And I won't marry you, you, you,
And I won't marry you.

Boy:
I'll give to you a soft easy chair,
To sit and comb your pretty hair,
If you will marry me, me, me,
If you will marry me.

Girl:
I won't accept your soft easy chair,
To sit and comb my pretty hair,
And I won't marry you, you, you,
And I won't marry you.

Boy:
I'll give to you a pure silver spoon,
To feed your babe this afternoon,
If you will marry me, me, me,
If you will marry me.

Girl:
I won't accept your pure silver spoon,
To feed my babe this afternoon,
And I won't marry you, you, you,
And I won't marry you.

Boy:
I'll give to you a fine dress of green,
To make you look like a real queen,
If you will marry me, me, me,
If you will marry me.

Girl:
I won't accept your fine dress of green,
To make me look like a real queen,
And I won't marry you, you, you,
And I won't marry you.

Boy:
I'll give to you a diamond so bright,
To light your way in dark of night,
If you will marry me, me, me,
If you will marry me.

Girl:
I won't accept your diamond so bright,
To light my way in dark of night,
And I won't marry you, you, you,
And I won't marry you.

Boy:
I'll give to you the key to my chest,
So you'll have gold at your request,
If you will marry me, me, me,
If you will marry me.

Girl:
I won't accept the key of your chest,
So I'll have gold at my request,
And I won't marry you, you, you,
And I won't marry you.

Boy:
I'll give to you the key to my heart,
That we may love and never part,
If you will marry me, me, me,
If you will marry me.

Girl:
Yes, I'll accept the key to your heart,
That we may love and never part,
And I will marry you, you, you,
And I will marry you.

(Smart girl, wasn't she!)

When I was in grade school, 1st or 2nd grade, I think, we used to sing that song. And I think it was when we listened to the Wisconsin Educational Radio Network (now WPR) program, 'Let's Sing!'  I only remembered the first two verses and had to find the others online.

Does anyone else remember this song?

Did anyone else listen to 'Let's Sing!' on the radio?? I think it was only a Wisconsin thing, so...

And yes, my gradeschool is definitely vintage...and no longer used as a school.  I posted about it earlier.

A little worse for wear,
but full of fond memories.

And just in case you're interested (that's rather presumptuous, isn't it!) here's the Woodside School post I wrote back in November.

  1. Good morning! I don't remember that song, or the radio program you mentioned, but I do remember your post about the school. Sad to see those wonderful old buildings falling to ruin, though that is a wonderful photo. Have a good Wednesday!!

  2. Don't you just love those wooden spools? I've got a few from my great aunt's, too. I've always wanted to find a way to display them. Thanks for the reminder!

  3. I've never heard the song but it sounds like a lot of similar ones we used to chant. Time never stand still, my high school is now a middle school and used to be the only High school in the county, Now there are four High schools and they are overcrowded!!! New follwer!

  6. Thanks for stopping by, love the old school house too bad someone hasn't restored it. We played at the one on our country road corner. Now in someones grove and I see they've finally put new shingles on it.
Don't remember your song, but great poem! Enjoy the week, I'm off to create.

  8. Good morning! Thanks for following via Feedly. I haven't checked into it yet, or the other one I've heard mentioned for that matter. I'm a little behind on these things. :)

I will be back later to read about your school. I went to a one room country school the first 6 years and wouldn't trade that experience for anything! Loved it.

Haven't heard (or maybe I just don't remember) the song. Cute!

  14. I don't remember the radio program but we sang in school. The music teacher came with her hand held tuner (I'm going to have to figure out what that is called! LOL) and we hummed the note and then sang. I never sang very loud...I was shy!

  15. Look at the school. What a great picture. I never heard that song. Now that I am a mom I find myself looking back on things from when I was a child and smiling. We pass my elementary school a few times a week. It seems like so long ago since I attended. well, it is so long a go. The building has not changed at all. I hope you are well! Have a great night!

  17. Somehow I didn't remember that you went to school in WI. Me, too, through high school and college. What's your radio station? We listened to WTMJ and WISN; oh boy, does that bring back memories!

  18. I remember the post about your school- I love that building. It has such character. I'm not familiar with the song but it's so cute. And, yes, she was smart! You have such a good eye for photography- I always like the way your pictures turn out.

  19. They need a preservation order on your school.

The key to my heart ... a great lesson in there for all.

All four school buildings I used if my formative years have been demolshed. It was a shame about my historic but austere 1870's infant and junior school but it was difficult to maintain and heat. In more recent times, it seems to have become necessary to replace school buildings with modern facilities and in one sense that was a good thing about my secondary school as the original 1960's building reminded me of a cross between a prison block and period communistic apartments. The 1970's building that was built to accommodate more students for all educational capabilities ("Comprehensive" education) seemed new all the time I used it. Unfortunately it had a flat roof and its design plan was very unusual & related to everything that 60's buildings weren't. The new buildings seem very stereotypical of similar establishments and will no doubt last a similar amount of time.
