Some of my Favorite Views of Yorkshire - Anglophile Friday

View (looking northwest?) from behind Richmond Castle
The River Swale, hence, Swaledale

View of Reeth

View from top of White Horse

View above Grassington, I think.

View from Hardraw Force

View of Askrigg from the A Road (A684 I believe)

View from West of Leyburn
One of my very favorite photos with two essential elements:
Yorkshire/Scottish black face sheep and drystone walls

View of Penhill, a very imposing and distinctive landform, from Bolton Castle grounds

 View of Askrigg Common
A lonely Yorkshire/Scottish blackface sheep

Another view of Askrigg Common in March
BLEAK

Messy map showing many of the places named in this post.
Grassington is farther south and the White Horse is to the east.
Hardraw is just at the west edge (left) of the map.

Believe it or not, all those circles and symbols help me see the place names better. :-)

  1. My dad lives in Yorkshire, East Yorkshire to be precise because it's a big county for us! He used to live in a village called Pocklington. I love saying that village name! Pocklington, Pocklington, Pocklington :)

  3. Now can't you just see Mr. Herriot walking through those fields - or driving through in his old battered car????

  16. Lovely photos! The moors can certainly be bleak. But I remember how wonderfully James Herriot described the coming of spring and how he loved it.

  19. Gorgeous and the sheep are so cute!

We went there once, someday I have to take my daughter. She wants to do a literature tour of famous authors: Shakespeare, Austin, C.S. Lewis, Dickens, Caroll, etcetera..... and stories i.e. Arthur

  29. Wow, you are an inspiration in many ways, apologies for my typing messing your page up because that's usually one of them :-)

Photo 1 - I've been to Richmond a few times although it has usually been in the past to take my Mother out for a birthday touristic day out with a look around the shops and some food. Consequently I ashamed to say that I've never been inside the castle. However the last time I was there, which was far too long ago now, I did a walk with friends & blogged about it which I notice you've seen & commented on. Interestingly from this walk I have the reverse view of this one from the other side of the river https://picasaweb.google.com/116957894189219149935/J_on_tourJayzspaze#5500335945936752818

photo 2 - I need to stop in Reeth sometime. It always seems to be a place to pass through last on a Wensleydale, Swaledale clockwise circuit tour. I did a walk with friends on the most recent occasion further up the dale and couldn't stop then either as I had friends in the car.

photo 3- white horse ... ditto photo 2

photo 4 - love the vantage point of Grassington.

Penhill - Following you on blogger has increased my awareness of such a beautiful area at a time when my own personal journey changed to being able to spend a little more time here. Thankfully I have been able to document that over the last few years and share it with you also. Still haven't visited Bolton Castle although it's higher on the list than you think. The last time I past it on a heritage bus with friends going for a walk at Hawes. I saw a repeat programme last week on itv from Bolton Castle that made me think of you ...

The view west of Leyburn is classic that incorporates the sheep, drystone walls and that unique Yorkshire escarpment on the hillside. I can see why you use this one on your sidebar.

Lastly to whet your appetite, I was surprised & shocked to see that there were a couple of places circled on your map which is where I'm preparing my next post ... another two places I had never ever been to before. North Yorkshire is truly a journey of discovery.

  35. How lovely! My mother is from the Midlands and I spent a month touring that part of England years ago. I loved it! Hope to get back someday and visit more.

  37. I love A684, have driven on it many times. Right before you get to Leyburn you pass the Wensleydale Heifer Pub, which James Wight (aka James Herriot) spent a lot of time at. They have fantastic food.
