What struck me when I first walked into York Minster is the height. That ceiling is a long way up. The rood screen (below) is stunningly beautiful, and walking through the minster I 'suffered' a definite awesomeness overload.
Mom, Dad, and kids
Ceiling, Chapter House, York Minster
Stone carvings with amazing detail
More ceiling detail. Can you imagine those workmen on scaffolding all those years ago, taking the greatest care to effect this amazing detail! Those people were obviously not in a hurry and were not stopping to text or tweet every few seconds.
I think all our modern technology is conditioning our children to demand instant results - and if they don't get them, to give up and move on. What's happened to focus time and perseverance?
Could a York Minster even be built today?

Amazing! I can see how you could be overwhelmed. You're right too-- would never be built today.
The churches over in Europe are quite magnificent. I can't even imagine them being replicated today with that much detail and splendor. Such treasures. And I agree that the modern generation have an attention span problem, LOL.
Love every little detail of York Minster. And trust me, I work with a lot of younger people and instant gratification is the only way the know and want. Try explaining to them that it's okay to slow down and sometimes things take time - they'll look at you like you have twelve heads!! lol
I have visited York when Ilived in England, beautiful!
truly awesome and everything in their forces us to look up and up, which is the purpose of going to church, to make us look up... now most of the new churches here are pre fab metal buildings, they are so much cheaper to build.... and there would be no detail on this church if it was being built now by hand... to hard to work with a cell phone in one hand and the IPAD in the other. and ear phones to the IPOD
I doubt it would be built today there is no instant gratification. Its beautiful!!
Wow, amazingly beautiful.
Astounding!
holy smokes, that's a lot of intricate detail!
Stopping by from Photo Friday blog hop - these are stunningly beautiful photos!!
Thanks

Just gorgeous! I love all that detail.
So beautiful! Makes me want to go to England right now. :-)
Breathtaking! All that detail! It is amazing.
You are right about everything has to be instant gratification. I even find myself falling into the trap!
Yes, I always think about --in amazement--how such places were built. the patience and time and skill. Have a nice weekend!
Amazing details. Thanks so much for sharing your photographs. Wishing you a nice, safe weekend.
Wow, you took some great photos.
Beautiful...and no I do not think they would build it today. :(
Everything fast...fast...fast...
There is such grandeur in this architecture.
There are certain Cathedrals in this country that are truly spectacular. Peterborough Cathedral (because I am biased!), St Paul's Cathedral and of course York Minster. All the work that has gone into these buildings for centuries and the work that continues each day by true craftsmen. People complain about the pews being taken out of these buildings but I think that this gives the opportunity of seeing more details of the architecture above our heads. Wonderful post. xx
"Mom, Dad & the kids " LOL.
The rood screen is one of the best helped by the light shining on it.
Magnificent!
Magnificent!
These photos are beautiful. Your photos always make me homesick. Is that weird to be homesick for a place that you aren't from?
Once again, beautiful pictures!! York Minster is so beautiful. Thanks for sharing your pictures.
