The Unorthodox Birthday Cake

The Grandsons, watching Dad light the candles on his birthday cake -
Gluten-free chocolate chip cookies, stacked
and pierced with a candle

It worked, kinda, as a birthday cake substitute. I used a Betty Crocker GF Chocolate Chip Cookie mix and added a couple extra cups of chocolate chips and chopped walnuts. Of course.

And now, to watch Dad blow out the candles
Such serious business!

You can see I made sure to put this birthday cake on a beautiful display plate, lol. And btw, I never really notice how much junk I have sitting around until I see a photo like this.

Where's Waldo?

Can you find:
The coffee grinder
The soap box and cutter
The chalkboard
The laundry basket
The stick of butter
The key-holder cat
The coffee maker
The scrambled eggs
The vintage egg crate
The vintage boiler
Grandpa Nelson-made bench

It was fun to have our oldest son and two of their boys with us on his birthday. The other kids and Mom were home, sorting and packing as they get ready to put their house [in the Minneapolis suburbs] on the market and move to Wisconsin. I can't wait!

  4. Your son passed that white blonde hair to his youngest. I love it. Do not worry about your kitchen , you were enjoying family. Besides 5 minutes after any of mine are around, my house looks like it was never picked up.xoxo,Susie

  6. DoodleBug's 'cake' will be the cupcakes. With candles, of course. I've seen cookie cakes before, but not like that one. It's actually a great idea! Love the pictures of your boy when he was coming along. I'm so happy for you that they are moving closer! What a blessing!

  8. It is amazing what the camera eye picks up! Do we just get use to the view? Or is it just because everything looks different on a computer screen?!?

How super fun you will have more family closer!

  14. I think a cookie "cake" is a great idea! Your kitchen looks like a normal kitchen. We use them, don't we? The perfect looking ones makes me wonder if they ever get used!

  16. It will be wonderful to have the family closer! And don't think of it as "clutter" - those tidbits are the things that make a home, rather than merely a house ....

  25. The cake looks lovely. Candles make it special. I always have stuff everywhere too. Our kitten is throwing small objects in the floor-I am afraid of falling over something. Real life is what you have and never worry about showing it. hugs, olive
