Ready to blow out the candles
My 'vintage' cookbook that contained the recipe I used for the layer cake.
I might have decent handwriting if I'd never learned to type.
Don't you find it almost painful to have to write things longhand??
The frosting recipe with a sample of cocoa on the page
The proof is in the pudding, so to speak.
AT THE OLD BALLGAME

Someone was guzzling pop
And here's my hubby (my favorite)
watching the game
Do I ever call him that in real life??? NO.
These days, with the grandkids here, I'm mostly calling him 'Grandpa.' :-)

ReplyDeleteNice to see a photo of your sons all together..handsome bunch :-)
I used to call my husband "hubby" when I was writing about him in the blog. Then one day I decided to use his real name as I never call him hubby in real life :-)
Pinning that recipe most definitely!
ReplyDeleteWhat a nice photo of " My Three Sons" handsome boys - but that little one?
Too precious!
XOXO
Hi Judy Wonderful cake. I just wish I lived closer to get a bite. Happy birthday to your grandson adn your sons are a handsome bunch, takes after hubby?
ReplyDeleteThat cookbook has the best basic recipes! Your cake looks so good - especially the frosting :-)
ReplyDeleteLoved all your pictures. The one where the birthday boy is eating his cake, too cute. I think it's great that you wrote in your cookbook. I had one that was my MIL's, she had written in it.Makes me smile.xoxo,Susie
ReplyDeleteCake recipe looks good! Love softball too!
ReplyDeleteDear Judy, what a lovely family you have been blessed with. The birthday boy was too cute and the cake makes me want chocolate for breakfast. Well I want that every day. I need to remember about the lemon juice and milk as I always have lemons. xo, olive
ReplyDeleteYummy! I'm definitely saving that recipe!
ReplyDeleteYour life always looks so perfectly American, or how I imagine it to be anyway!
I've got that same cookbook. I still go to it for favorite recipes.
ReplyDeleteI loved seeing your softball photo's since we're a softball family, too.
Happy Birthday to the little guy and Happy Birthday to you, too, this week!
My mom has that same cookbook still!!! I love it!! And what a great cake for the birthday boy... I wonder if I could get Chris to make me one on my birthday? lol
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday to a fine young man! The cake looks soooo good! Wonderful to see photos of your family.
ReplyDeleteI will have to check out that recipe for my son since he is a big chocolate lover!! Love the match stick substitute!! Love your family photos!! Happy Birthday to your grandson!!
ReplyDeletethese are super family fotos.. memory's captured here.
ReplyDeletethis is my 4th birthday post today and all had choc cakes.. now i want one.
I would never think to use just match sticks on a cake - how very clever of you.
ReplyDeleteI have used lemon to sour milk before too. Love the chocolate cake. Love the photos of the family. But the last pic of your husband was good - did you see the shadows of the fence on his face? sandie
ReplyDeleteDelicious looking cake! Betty Crocker is the best. I have an older copy from my Mom that is falling apart, but I refuse to give it up!
ReplyDeletethe cake and ice cream looked awesome! loved watching ball games in summer.
ReplyDeleteWhat a yummy looking cake. So nice to have your family all around. :)
ReplyDeleteNow I want some chocolate cake. I love the way you used matchsticks. And it reminds me that I'm out of birthday candles myself (just added to grocery list). I suppose one could substitute butter for the shortening, don't you think? I'm a real butter only type. :)
ReplyDeleteYour raised some mighty fine looking men! That cake looks delicious! I use milk and vinegar to make buttermilk - works great. I'm sure any acidic liquid would work fine. Great idea to use the stick matches in place of candles - seemed to work like a charm! I always enjoy your photos!
ReplyDeleteI have that cookbook and the one before it...guess that makes me vintage :)
ReplyDeleteBalisha
Hope your grandson enjoyed his birthday. The cake sounds delicious.
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday to him!!! The cake looks delicious!

ReplyDeleteI wouldn't have thought about lime juice in a chocolate cake! I'll have to give it a try!
ReplyDeleteYour family is handsome! All that testosterone- I don't know how you did it. LOL They are a good looking bunch and I can always feel your love for them in your words.
ReplyDeleteA lucky little guy to get such a great cake :-) My hubby just had a birthday and our daughter baked him a homemade chocolate cake. So good! I did eat just a little of it.

ReplyDeleteLooks like you made an A+ on your birthday Chocolate Cake!! Makes me now want so choc. cake!! Happy Birthday to Little one!!
ReplyDeleteThat cookbook of yours looks kinda like mine although I've never discovered that recipe. Our traditional birthday cake is very similar but also has coca cola in it and was given to me from some'ne's Farmer's Almanac. Nice photos of your family; bet it was a busy, fun time!
ReplyDeleteOh my that cake looks delicious! Happy Birthday to your grandson!
ReplyDeletewhat a delicious looking cake! I think those old books have the best recipes. Yours looks well loved.
ReplyDeleteGreat post of food & family. Natural photos & a nice idea to photograph the recipe ... & the important bit to eat it !
ReplyDelete(on a side note, Sorry I'm not around at the moment, I've got technical problems & can't access my photo library. The appointment I had today didn't sort it, I have another on friday & if that doesn't work, they say I'm going to have to wipe the computer completely & start again.)
