The Birthday Boy and Cocoa Fudge Cake Recipe

Ready to blow out the candles

There was a birthday for a certain 6 year old grandson celebrated yesterday. As you can see, I couldn't find any candles so we used stick matches as a substitute. Glad he liked the cake. And it turned out to be a busy day, for in the evening we went to watch his uncles (our two youngest sons) play softball.

My 'vintage' cookbook that contained the recipe I used for the layer cake.

I might have decent handwriting if I'd never learned to type.
Don't you find it almost painful to have to write things longhand??

Grandpa always used lemon juice and milk when he didn't have buttermilk on hand. It seems that lime juice worked just as well. (No, I didn't realize that I didn't have lemon juice when I started this project.)

The frosting recipe with a sample of cocoa on the page

The proof is in the pudding, so to speak.

And here's my hubby (my favorite)

Do I ever call him that in real life??? NO.
These days, with the grandkids here, I'm mostly calling him 'Grandpa.' :-)

  7. Dear Judy, what a lovely family you have been blessed with. The birthday boy was too cute and the cake makes me want chocolate for breakfast. Well I want that every day. I need to remember about the lemon juice and milk as I always have lemons. xo, olive

  19. Now I want some chocolate cake. I love the way you used matchsticks. And it reminds me that I'm out of birthday candles myself (just added to grocery list). I suppose one could substitute butter for the shortening, don't you think? I'm a real butter only type. :)

  20. Your raised some mighty fine looking men! That cake looks delicious! I use milk and vinegar to make buttermilk - works great. I'm sure any acidic liquid would work fine. Great idea to use the stick matches in place of candles - seemed to work like a charm! I always enjoy your photos!

(on a side note, Sorry I'm not around at the moment, I've got technical problems & can't access my photo library. The appointment I had today didn't sort it, I have another on friday & if that doesn't work, they say I'm going to have to wipe the computer completely & start again.)
