At the Wedding
Last Thursday we spent the day near Westby, WI. I love that area! It was a gorgeous day, and as we always do in that part of the state, we took a nice drive around the coulees and ridges. At one point, we came upon the site of an Amish wedding which had obviously just taken place. We met quite a few attendees already leaving the wedding by buggy or by foot to go home for chores.
Of course I didn't take photos of people, and just barely got these photos (out my window) of the lineup of buggies. I noticed that all the people we met were wearing very formal attire, and the driver of each buggy was wearing white gloves. Evidently that's to keep the reins from getting his hands dirty. Looked pretty snazzy.
Ye olde Hitchin' Rail
This one was taken through Eric's moon roof. Sneaky rascal, isn't he. As he said, he just happened to be parked under the clothesline. Anyway, he has many friends among the Amish in the Westby area. He may bring one of his Amish friends up here one night in October because I ordered some handmade items from him, as Christmas gifts. I'll be sure to show you AFTER Christmas. :-)
So Eric phoned the other night. I was in Sam's Club. I answered with,
'You've got 2 minutes. I'm in the store.' (Don't worry. He'd be offended if I were nice to him. :-)
'I think Daniel wants to come up to your house to deliver the ____, so it sounds like you may be having Amish for dinner.'
'Mmmm, are they tasty?'
'Yeah, as long as they're slow cooked.'
(A typical conversation.)

Love your pictures. We have Amish in nothern Indiana. I love to see their farmyards...always tidy. You made me laugh calling the fellows trolls. :):)xoxo,Susie
ReplyDeleteHow fun to see an Amish wedding! It such a beautiful sight to see buggies all lined up, opposed to cars all lined up, don't you think! I love how their farms are always so taken care of. Very nice!
ReplyDeleteYour photos always make me want to hop in the car and head up your way! Such a pretty area, and so interesting. One of my old Multiply friends (now just Facebook) works for some Amish people, driving them places they need to go and she does printing for them on her computer - signs and such. She has become quite friendly with them and talks about them frequently on FB. It is certainly a more simple way to live.
ReplyDeleteThose purple daisy-like flower are gorgeous. Thanks for sharing. I look forward to your posts!

It is beautiful there - just beautiful. And the Amish is so interesting. What seems funny to me - is a lot of who we are is where we were born in to - do you know what I mean? It seem so hard to be Amish -but that is all they have ever known. sandie
ReplyDeleteGorgeous photos!

ReplyDeleteWhat a great little area! Living in the big city you can tend to forget that their are still such quiet little places in this country. And I love the conversation about having Amish for dinner! lol
ReplyDeleteYou're so funny, Judy! Slow-cooked! I've been baking more gluten-free lately. But this has me wanting to get out my Marcia Adams Amish recipes book.
ReplyDeleteWhat a gorgeous barn, I love the weathered patina...
ReplyDeleteGreat shots of the buggies, I've heard that they don't like to have their photo taken. But I wonder about those who are on the Amish series on TLC.
Jen
