By the Dawn's Early Light

By the Dawn's Early Light

The porch floor is painted, the wall of the house under the porch roof is re-painted, and I'm thinking about re-painting the wall above the porch roof today if it's not too windy and cold, and if I get brave enough to put a ladder on top of the roof and stand on it.

Don't hold your breath, for I'm already getting squeamish, thinking about that southeast corner which has about an 18' dropoff. It will be a while before the entire porch project is done, for there are a couple other huge projects that need to be done in the meantime, before the ground freezes, like putting in foundation drains and moving close to 100 tons of dirt.

Maple Syrup

Friends of ours gave us this jar of beautiful maple syrup, which they had tapped and boiled down from their own trees. Several years ago, we did a little experiment with the kids, so that they could have the experience of making maple syrup, and so they could see just how much maple sap is needed. This jar of maple syrup represents lots of maple sap, patience, and... generosity!

  3. I've never thought of combining pork and maple syrup, sounds good though. We like a little maple syrup mixed with squash.

  6. doesn't look ugly to me, it looks delish and if i were there that burned crispy part is what i want on my plate...
that maple syrup is a great gift, i bought a bottle about half that size at a museum, they had a man there showing how to make the syrup and the small bottles was 8 dollars. it was worth it. yum it tastes better than the store kind. i had never eaten maple syrup until i met bob, we were raised on cane syrup, which is what they make in GA.. i love both

  8. I buy my handmade soaps locally, but that raspberry sorbet has me sorely tempted. Please pass on the painting. Got a neighbor who works for soap or a maple syrup apple pie?

  9. Maybe you could find a painter for that spot? It might not be too much since if it is a small area.

    Your dish sounds delicious.

When I was a kid, my parents would take us to Vermont for maple syrup.

    Your project is coming along!

  13. It is amazing how much work goes into making maple syrup and how much sap is needed! I am surprised in not much more expensive. We love going to Vermont and coming back with lots of yummy syrup. I hope all is well with you. I had computer problems for a couple of months. I needed a little break anyway. I am so happy to be back and visiting my favorite bloggy friends! Hope you are well! Happy Autumn!

  17. "Several years ago, we did a little experiment with the kids"

    ...

Hmm, putting it that way makes me feel young until I realize that (in this case) "several years" = nearly 30!

  18. That looks so good, Judy. We Wisconsinites must have pork on our mind this Fall morning. Yours sounds delicious! That soap looks good enough to eat!;>)

My cousins brought me some PA maple syrup. I know it is odd but it has a different taste than WI syrup does. xo Diana

  19. I bet you are relieved to have accomplished so much painting. And that maple syrup looks beautiful! We just bought a couple of half gallons from a place in Vermont, since our stash had run out.
