Sunrise Photos, Christmas Tree, Waiting for Spring

Yes, folks, the Christmas tree is still up on the front porch. Want to make something of it?  We've heard a complaint by someone who thinks we don't own a calendar. Well, this has been such a snowy, cold, LONG winter, and that little bit of cheer on our front porch is staying right where it is until the snow melts. That may be a while.

The backyard, photo taken March 2

We're not like other places that have huge snowstorms followed by warm days that melt it all. No, we get our snow starting in November (if we're lucky to avoid it in October) and then it merely accumulates throughout the winter until sometime in March or April when we get days that are warm enough to begin to melt it. So far, we're still getting mornings well below zero degrees (yesterday minus 29 degrees F.), so the Christmas tree on the porch is staying put. Back off!

No, it's not the same photo, but maybe I'm the only one who thinks it looks different.

Today I heard a guy on the radio say that the difference between Wisconsinites and other people is that other people, when summer is over, roll up their beach towels and put them away in the closet. In Wisconsin, we roll up our beach towels at the end of summer and put them at the base of our doors to keep out the draft. Sometimes we put them on the window sills for the same reason. There they stay, frozen in place until April. - (That's not an exact quotation, but the guy was Michael Perry, a Wisconsin author, born and raised just down the road a spell.)

  1. Color me crazy, but I love the Christmas tree on the porch! I'm thinking that would make me feel better about getting all this snow that we're still getting. Although, after hearing about your snow and how it never gives you a break and goes away for a little bit, I've really got nothing to complain about. Oh who am I kidding? I'm going to keep complaining right up until Spring!

  2. Oh friend..
    Thats alot of wonderful snow.
I love your Christmas tree too.
I have one still up in my bedroom.
But put woolie hearts on it.
I love the lights and cheer they bring.

    Woolie Warm Blessings

  3. Aw, Judy, I love seeing your coloured lights still on your tree on the porch. They really do add some much needed colour to your landscape. I remember rolling up towels for doors and windows at different times in my life in different houses. Thankfully our house of 37 years is draft free but there is ice on the bottom of the insulated windows this morning as it went down to -25 C last night. This weekend it's to get up to the freezing mark and may be the break in this cold snap until next winter. We hope! Have a great day.

  4. I love the sunshine shots. Very pretty on the barn. I left our tree in the house up a week longer than usual.:)The little one looking out at the snow, so sweet. Your snow is way deeper than our and we had a lot this year. Stay warm, xoxoxo,Susie

  6. I would keep a Christmas tree up all year long if my hubby let me! I love the lights, so pretty with the snow.

I had to laugh about the towel by the door for draft...Minnesotans do the same!

  7. I think it's Old Man Winter who doesn't own a calendar! Instead of decorating for this past Valentine's Day, I felt I should have been hauling out the Christmas decor again! And I had towels on my bedroom windowsills all winter. I took them off about a week ago because I was sick of looking at them, but they should have stayed!

  8. What gorgeous photos..honestly, soo pretty! And personally, I love that Christmas tree right where it is. I so enjoy experiencing these kind of winters through the blog world. Here in So. California I have slept with my bedroom window wide open except on the two nights it rained. (AND I still left it open a crack, lol) Enjoy your day!

  11. What a beautiful post, Judy. I love the one of the little one pressed to the window.
I love your lighted tree on the porch. Who the heck would complain about THAT? Unless it is your hubby and the lights keep him awake at night-and I don't think THAT is the case!

Leave that tree right out there and fill it with Easter eggs-that'll show them! xo Diana

  12. oh, gosh, that made me laugh! yes, we always rolled up towels and put them on our window sills - to keep out the draft AND to catch the melting frost that always happened on the INSIDE of the windows of our old farmhouse. thanks for that memory! they were always re-frozen to the window sill by night fall. :)

  13. Love how the Christmas lights give some color to the white landscape! You have a lot more snow than we do. but what we have is not melting yet.
Rolling up the towels made me laugh. Yes I do the same thing.
Spring please make an appearance soon!

  14. that is a LOT OF SNOW and thanks for the smiles about the tree and the towels at end of summer... love the tree so you have my vote to keep it there.. and since by the time the snow melts it is only a few short weeks, just let it be year round...
be still my heart on the sunrise and window.

  15. I think your tree looks great on the porch and still lit. I have neighbors who put lights around the roof edges and let us say that many of those light do not come down until it is warm and I know some who leave them on year round.

  16. You tell em, Judy! Wisconsinites are most definitely not wimps just as Floridians aren't when we endure rainstorms that scare the Daylights out of most normal people and hot temps to match. No, I don't make fun of people who fight the climate whatever it may be! We put our beach towels in front of our doors to keep the rain from Nor'easters out. ;-)

I like the tree there, and more importantly, it looks great still! So twinkle on, O Christmas Tree! We love your lights!

    xo

  18. Each week the weatherman has been promising next week will be more Spring like, but when next week comes it is not as warm as expected, there is a surprise snow storm and it sure don't seem like Spring!

Nice photos. Love the early morning light.

  21. I think I'd be tempted to keep the tree up year round.

Can't some people be a pain? Brother. No cheer in their hearts.

Take care, stay warm and keep those lights twinkling! Susan

  22. Hi Judy,
I forgot we were both from Wisconsin! Yes, this is the endless winter...and I love the beach towel story. I'll have to remember that one. We don't have a tree anymore, but on occasion, I use the spot lights on the trees outside to add a little cheer to the darkness. I hope you see robins soon. We live in Delafield.

  23. I your 'winter tree' makes you happy, it should stay right where it is for as long as it makes you smile! Judy, I just can't imagine that much snow. Oh my.

  24. My Christmas wreaths are still up. When I don't have to climb a snowbank five feet high to remedy the situation, I will. I'm thinking May.

  25. Wow that is a lot of snow. Haven't had that since i lived in sweden. Ireland is very mild so we rarely get snow. I love the look of the snow but we really want spring now don't we? The days are a bit longer and brighter.

LMAO - you're too funny - I'm laughing out loud at my desk right now!
And Judy - I know I must sound like a broken record - because I think I say it with every comment - but truly - your photos are just breath taking -
AND your trees look beautiful against all that white - just beautiful!

  31. Nothing wrong with a little cheer to help us all get through these brutal winters, Judy. lol Living in SW Michigan, I feel your "winter blues" pain. lol And yep, we roll up bath towels and put them on our windowsills to keep out the frigid temps! lol I'm counting the days with ya, girl. Spring can't come soon enough. :)

  33. Beautiful snow pics - although I would go stir crazy if the snow would stay that long!
About the Christmas lights - nearby in the parking lot from the wellknown South Coast Plaza (mall) they keep Christmas lights on -all year long - first it started with one rows of trees. This year they kept on some more...so you're going with the trend!
