It was a beautiful, sunny day and I was on my way home from Rice Lake. When I saw these ladies, whom I see every time I go to Rice Lake, I wanted to get a few photos because you never know when the opportunity (meaning blue skies and nice weather) will present itself again. Depending upon the time of day, the cows may or may not be dotting the hillside. This herd of Holsteins lives a few miles north of us. The cows nearest the fence were all lying there so comfortably when I stealthily approached the fence with my camera. But sure enough, they all got up in unison and looked at me. I didn't mean to disturb their peace, but I guess I did.
These cows live a few miles south of us, and the other day we had a downpour, as you can see. As I saw them walking around in the water, I was worried that they might step out where it was too deep. Mr. Cranberry assured me that cows aren't that stupid. Good. That's good to know. Or maybe he didn't want me freaking out about the cows.
I'm looking at her; she's looking at me. It was a staredown. She won.
Just a couple miles from us lives this gorgeous dapple gray horse, one of the prettiest horses I've ever seen. And of course as I went to take the picture from the busy road (actually, a quick drive-by pic), the horse put her head down to get some of that new grass.
Note the rusty burn barrel in the background. That's a bonus. :-)

What a gorgeous dapple grey! My grandfather used to raise Holsteins and one single Jersey; he said he'd always made sure to have one on the farm because of their beautiful eyes and wonderful milk.

ReplyDeleteI had to giggle about the cows getting into deep water. When we go on airboat rides, cows can be found in the lake, eating some kind of grass that grows in the shallows. I always worry about the alligators getting them! I've watched too many westerns, with cows swimming across the Rio Grande, I guess. I have never worried about them getting into deep water.

Cows in a grassy meadow are the epitome of that "bucolic country scene" we read about in books and poetry. I love the horse. Such a beauty!

ReplyDeleteI grew up with Holsteins grazing across the road. They used to walk through the willows, across the creek and back home during the evenings for milking. This was long before I had a camera, but I always liked hearing them crunching through broken twigs and seeing their dappled shapes through the shade of the trees. You got some nice shots of these lovely ladies ... and dappled grey looks sweet :) Wendy x
