J_on_Tour, George Gently, and N.T. Wright

What do J_on_Tour, George Gently, and N.T. Wright have in common?

Durham Cathedral.

There are at least four reasons I'd like to visit Durham Cathedral.

1. I'd love to visit all the cathedrals in England. I wonder if I could get a government grant to do so.
2. J_on_Tour has shown us some wonderful photos of the place.*
3. N.T. Wright (who is author of a few books on my shelves) was Bishop of Durham from 2003-2010.
4. The fictitious Inspector George Gently and his arrogant little twit of a sergeant are stationed at Durham and in one of the episodes Gently was shot in the Cathedral (or was it his shoulder?) Check out this link for an interesting article about the reaction to that episode.

*In case you missed J_on_Tour's post about Durham Cathedral, be sure go back and view his beautiful wintertime photos.

Fly into either of those, then take a train to Durham.

One photo showed the relatively narrow nave of Durham Cathedral with folding chairs on either side of the pews, in order to accommodate a larger number of people. That's always a good sign.

And I know, right about now you've become convinced that I all ever do is watch mystery DVDs. Not true!  Downton Abbey and the Jane Austen novels made into movies are not mysteries. And I do other things. Wash clothes, cook dinner, make soap, pet the dog, pet the other dog, pet the cat, pick strawberries... I'm thinking...

  3. Aren't cathedrals amazing? (especially when you think how they were built without modern machinery!) Have you read Pillars of the Earth?

  4. Beautiful photos and it is so much fun to see places that remind you of a movie or a book...or a setting in one of them. I've been mystery crazy this summer. We are watching the Endeavor DVDs from the library now! lol Hugs!

  8. I love these photos. That last paragraph made me giggle! Seems all I ever do is feed the pets, clean up after the pets and start all over again!

  12. Wouldn't it be something to visit those large cathedrals...such works of art.

I can't pet my dogs. If I do fur flies. I have to pet them outside with a brush about 4 times a day at this point..the shedding is awful :(

  14. Thanks for the mention, sorry I'm late here again with my comment although I did read it a while back. I always had it in mind after we discussed it to do a few guest posts. I went on a specific day out to get some photographic material.

Interesting that two of the photos you link here are quite difficult to get, you have to know exactly when to send off for the Lumiere tickets as it is essentially crowd controlled and I usually hear about it when it's on. Quite difficult to get there on time without having to take a day off work with the earlier dark nights.
Secondly, there is a charge for the photography Cathedral interior permit, the price of which is comparable to the entrance fee of a major tourist attraction. Photography essentially is only allowed at times when there are no services on ... every time I'm there, there is some kind of service on ... haha.
I was pleased with what I took from the cloisters though and some other things. we'll have a talk about it again when I get the chance to write some text.

Interesting link on more history to place. I suppose Cathedrals in days gone by were thought of being safe places in taking cover from enemies. ... sanctuary knocker example etc
