Good Fences and Virginia Creeper

I loved this sweet little barn and nearby fence. It looks like a happy barn to me, the kind that should be in a children's picture book.

And here is the beautiful Virginia Creeper
and gorgeous weathered barn boards

Entrance to the hay loft

I love this stuff.

And now a word about Virginia Creeper:

My failed trellis experiment

I wanted the trellis on the west side of our house so that Virginia Creeper, which creeps along every other fence we have without any encouragement whatsoever, would creep onto the trellis and look pretty in all it's green/red/purplish leafiness on the side of the house. Instead of waiting for nature to plant it, as it does elsewhere, I actually transplanted little plants to the soil at the side of the house and as they grew, I gently forced guided their stubborn little tendrils onto the trellis. They refused to stay there, refused to continue growing, and after a couple seasons, I gave up. We bricked in the soil to cover any reminder of that disastrous experiment (It had its chance!) and covered it with a barn door and vintage sign. Okay, I don't know that it's vintage, but it could be, for there have been pedestrians ever since Adam and Eve walked in the garden. The sign may have come later.

I have no idea why there is now a ladder against the back door or why an axe is standing there. I tried to pick up the axe the other day and the head fell off. My daughter, standing nearby, accused me of being an 'axe murderer.'

Yes, that one.

  3. What a beautiful barn. I notice them all the time when driving in the country. There are some beauties in our neck of the woods, too. Virginia Creeper is a wonderful accent to any building. Is there anything more precious than a grand-baby? Deb

  5. I really like this Little Weathered White/Gray Barn . . .

  6. What a beautiful barn! The fence and the gorgeous Virginia Creeper add texture to the whole scene. I tried to grow a Virginia Creeper this summer and it also refused to attach itself to the cedar rail fence that I was expecting it to climb all over. I will protect it this winter and hope it springs back in the spring. Your grand baby is adorable all bundled up on her mummy's knee. Enjoy the day.

  7. I love the barn and that briliant blue sky! Beautiful! But any picture of a precious babe all bundled up gets me every time.

  10. Love, love the barn and Virginia Creeper. Our youngest lives in Virginia so I'm familiar with it. It must have a mind of its own, as they say, lol. Your daughter has a great sense of humor, and the sweet grandbaby is too precious. Have a wonderful day!

  11. Your photos today get A for Awesome! i love the two fence shots.. wow. bob battles that VA creeper and you don't want to hear his words.. down here it will take over everything in the yard, our pine trees have it 40 feet in the air, he kills it at the root, then the dead leaves blow in the pool. that said it is one of the most beautiful of weeds and i got a big kick out of you trying to force it to grow where you want it to... that snuggly buggly baby is precious

  12. Your daughter has your same sense of humour! Love the barn with a bit of moss growing on the roof. It looks empty though :( Wendy x

  13. I love that barn. The Virginia Creeper will probably surprise you and come up and cover your pretty decor! Have a lovely day.

  14. axe murderer...SO funny!! Virginia Creeper is beautiful but not on buildings; it'll take down a building in too few years. Lovely barn but needs a roof and a bit of siding replaced...sorry, as a farmer, I see needful chores when I look at buildings and fences -lol-.
Give the beautiful youngin' a smooch for me, what a perfect child!

  17. Judy, so enjoyed your pictures of the barn and the fencing and all. I noted the small door in the top of the barn, and it reminds me of hay baling when I was a kid on the farm.

  24. What a grand old barn. Virginia creeper is so stunning this time of year with the vibrant red color. I had to laugh about your experiment in planting it. It sure didn't want to cooperate!

  25. All beautiful and adorable photos, and I like your play with the title just in time for Halloweenie!

  26. Your grandbaby is so adorable, I just want to kiss those cheeks all over. Your creeper pictures are so pretty. Very appropriate to show CREEPERS on the day before Halloween! And it IS funny that you transplanted and tried to grow a hated invasive plant! BUT I agree with you, I love most kinds of plants, whether invasive or not! YIKES, you could have cut your toe off when the ax dropped!!

  27. Morning, such a sweet Grandbaby....Love the red vine crawling up the fence, looks great. Blessings Francine.

  28. You can tell you love this "stuff" in this post...the barn, the fence and the feathery pasture grass. I like that you suggested it's the kind of place you would find a children's book. Nice composition in each photo and your daughter and grandbaby photo are precious. Thank you for reminding me about VA creeper.

  29. Very charming barn with the Virginia Creeper. It's such a colorful plant. - Great fence shots too. Sorry about your failed experiment. I bet that would have looked amazing.
Your daughter and grandbaby are very cute.

  30. Isn't it ironic how some things grow where we don't want them and others won't grow where we plant them? Nature does have her way. We used to have a Virginia creeper along a fence. It grew like crazy. I loved the colour of it in the fall.
Sweet baby snuggles are such a blessing.

  31. I always love your photos from around the farm and your beautiful surrounding area. The weathered barn boards are gorgeous. Seriously.

The best photo is that last one, of the snugly little baby with your lovely daughter! I couldn't help but notice that she is holding the baby the same way you are holding your sweet kitty!! :)

  35. Wonderful Pictures!!!!
Isn't it funny how the wild things grow where they want to grow? You can't tame them.

  36. Looks like your area has some pretty sturdy fences.

  37. I've tried and tried to get Virginia Creeper to climb on things in our woods. It always grows where I don't want it to grow. I love your pictures...old barns are the most interesting. They make for beautiful paintings and photos.

  48. The Virginia creeper is such a pretty color and looks so nice against the old white barn. I guess it does not liek to be transplanted, but maybe will migrate to your trellis on its own one day?

    Your grandbaby is so adorable!
