I loved this sweet little barn and nearby fence. It looks like a happy barn to me, the kind that should be in a children's picture book.

And now a word about Virginia Creeper:
I wanted the trellis on the west side of our house so that Virginia Creeper, which creeps along every other fence we have without any encouragement whatsoever, would creep onto the trellis and look pretty in all it's green/red/purplish leafiness on the side of the house. Instead of waiting for nature to plant it, as it does elsewhere, I actually transplanted little plants to the soil at the side of the house and as they grew, I gently forced guided their stubborn little tendrils onto the trellis. They refused to stay there, refused to continue growing, and after a couple seasons, I gave up. We bricked in the soil to cover any reminder of that disastrous experiment (It had its chance!) and covered it with a barn door and vintage sign. Okay, I don't know that it's vintage, but it could be, for there have been pedestrians ever since Adam and Eve walked in the garden. The sign may have come later.
I have no idea why there is now a ladder against the back door or why an axe is standing there. I tried to pick up the axe the other day and the head fell off. My daughter, standing nearby, accused me of being an 'axe murderer.'

What a beautiful barn! The fence and the gorgeous Virginia Creeper add texture to the whole scene. I tried to grow a Virginia Creeper this summer and it also refused to attach itself to the cedar rail fence that I was expecting it to climb all over. I will protect it this winter and hope it springs back in the spring. Your grand baby is adorable all bundled up on her mummy's knee. Enjoy the day.

ReplyDeleteYour photos today get A for Awesome! i love the two fence shots.. wow. bob battles that VA creeper and you don't want to hear his words.. down here it will take over everything in the yard, our pine trees have it 40 feet in the air, he kills it at the root, then the dead leaves blow in the pool. that said it is one of the most beautiful of weeds and i got a big kick out of you trying to force it to grow where you want it to... that snuggly buggly baby is precious

ReplyDeleteaxe murderer...SO funny!! Virginia Creeper is beautiful but not on buildings; it'll take down a building in too few years. Lovely barn but needs a roof and a bit of siding replaced...sorry, as a farmer, I see needful chores when I look at buildings and fences -lol-.

And it IS funny that you transplanted and tried to grow a hated invasive plant! BUT I agree with you, I love most kinds of plants, whether invasive or not! YIKES, you could have cut your toe off when the ax dropped!!

Isn't it ironic how some things grow where we don't want them and others won't grow where we plant them? Nature does have her way. We used to have a Virginia creeper along a fence. It grew like crazy. I loved the colour of it in the fall.

Strangely enough, I once tried to plant Virginia creeper on a fence and it wouldn't take. BUT I have Virginia creeper growing in places all over my yard where I don't want it. Love the barn!
