Woods on an October Afternoon

Mr. Cranberry and I took a walk in our woods on Saturday afternoon so that he could spray paint a large, orange X on the trees he wants to get out of the woods this fall. Among the many maples, I noticed some ironwood, oak, and a few elm.

When I first stepped into the woods from the alfalfa field, I remarked at how beautiful it was, the afternoon light filtered by the leaves. But in the picture I got with my cellphone, the golden beauty disappeared and everything was covered with a blue haze (below).

Mr. Cranberry handed me his blue-blocker sunglasses and said, 'Here. Look through these.'  I did. The blue haze vanished. Since I only had my cellphone with me and not my regular camera, I took the photos by holding his sunglasses in front of my cellphone lens.

A little birch and maple vignette.
And I just noticed a couple oak leaves lying there also.
I think the birch looks like something from Dr. Who.
Can you see Matt Smith in there?

(Didn't get the glasses over the lens this time)

We'll be lucky to get this one down before it falls down!

This one must go. It's in the path we'll use to get the truck or tractor into the woods.

Woodhenge. Remains of former family powwows.

And you can see on the right side of the picture that the sunglasses didn't completely cover the lens.

What you need for this experiment

And now you're going to tell me that my cellphone has a blue-blocker setting on it??  Probably.

 The Neighbor's Barn

Have you been out to the woods yet this fall? Better hurry.

  1. Loved this post - great photos, good improvisation and (I think) some gentle humour that I liked very much. Now you're going to tell me it wasn't intended! What's Mr C wearing round his waist? It looks like a holster.

  2. An autumn walk in the woods. There are few things like it. These are amazing shots :)

  3. Beautiful pictures, Judy! I notice how brilliant the fall foliage is when I'm wearing my magnetic sunglasses too, and I tried putting them (they are not large) over my big camera lens but they didn't cover enough. I'm wondering if there's a lens cover in that colour that I could buy for it. It does make the colours truer. Also, on my iPhone, I find I have a pink tone to my photos. I don't know why that is but it really makes my photos look funny. Maybe I need to buy a pair of cheap sunglasses with a large lens? Happy Monday to you.

  4. Beautiful...my dad used to "mark" trees for the US Forest Service so that brings back memories. It is a lot of work to be the custodian of a forest!!

  5. These photos are stunning and you are able to experience this beauty all the time. I love seeing moss and all the beautiful lighting in the woods.

  6. Well, aren't you the inventive one! What an excellent idea, using the sunglasses over the lens!! Love the photos. You'll have to buy your cell phone it's own pair of sun glasses now. I have no idea if mine has a blue-blocker (or even what that is!). You are so much more edumacated about those things than I am, Judy!

  7. I am soooo jealous. i have always wanted to own my own woods and to have your own woodhenge is wonderful... i have to drive 20 to 25 minutes to find any woods and most of our woods can't be walked in because it is to swampy... but we can walk in them year round... your cell phone did a fantastic job of these photos, but then it KNEW who was holding it i am sure.

  8. Well, now I know your picture taking talent is NOT in the GOOD camera you have. You have taken fantastic pictures using a CELL phone and holding a pair of GLASSES over it! LOL You are my new hero!

Love the woods- I can almost smell Autumn in this picture. One of my favorites is Woodhenge! xo Diana

  14. Who knew? I guess Mr. Cranberry did, and now we all know, thanks to you two. Still waiting for fall color down here. We only have snippets right now. We're getting a storm front tonight and first, I hope there is no damage, and secondly, hope the leaves are still intact afterward. Thanks for joining the barn linkup!

  19. The woods are beautiful. As a child we visited what we called "the timber" and there is such beauty and serenity there. A special place! Sometimes I wish I lived out in the country and had timber!

  20. Gorgeous photos. It reminds me of the first time I put on "rose colored glasses" and saw the transformation. Mr. Cranberry must have had very clean glasses to get such vibrant and clear photos. It reminds me of a photo text from my son of the moon this weekend, somehow taken with his cell through the telescope. Just amazing.

  21. The scene of the neighbor's barn is beautiful! And so is the first picture. What a genius trick, I will be remembering it! Are the stumps really the remains of ancient meetings? How cool!

  30. Your pictures are amazing! We don't have birch around here and I love to see the beautiful bark. We do need to get to the woods very soon...my husband is having withdrawal from it. We have some land in East Texas and it's covered in big beautiful trees. Mostly oaks and pine but it's wonderful.

  35. Great pictures - thanks for taking us along on your walk. I have problems with the blue showing up on some of my pics also and suspect there is a simple solution on my camera and just have not figured it out.LOL
Thanks for stopping by. Enjoy your evening.

  36. Those blueblocker sunglasses sure made a HUGE difference! My gosh, those are some great photos. What a wonderful walk in the woods!

  37. Wow I didn't realize that sunglasses blocked out blue light. Anyway I enjoyed the mosaic and the picture of the barn too.

  38. There are some camera apps that allow you to warm up the light when you take the photo. The sunglasses work in the pinch to reduce glare, but they also make polarizer filters for iPhones! Most work without your iPhone not in a case. But there are some clip-on ones that you can use without requiring a case removal.

  44. Hi Judy,
    Great photos.
The boys looked for Matt Smith in your photo, LOL!! Sam is a big Dr. Who fan.

Thank you for the advice on my blog regarding how to help the boys filter the media. I appreciate it.

    Lots of Love,

  45. Your autumn color is beautiful! I love your woods--they must be a pleasant place to walk around and feel surrounded by nature. I find autumn colors can be brighter on cloudy days--maybe nature's blue filter?

  47. Such beautiful autumn pictures!! Our woods look nothing like yours yet, but it is coming...

Mr. Cranberry is ingenious. His sunglasses were just the thing you needed. :)

  48. It's interesting how your two photos of the woods differ. Ok the golden one that you like from your camera has a unique charm about it but I also like the light depicted coming through the trees on your cell phone.
I've got three means of recording digital pictures now and they all have their benefits. My camera phone (had since january) is ideal for quick pictures, great in standard shots but awkward in varying light conditions as the readings are all averaged out. However it can throw up some surprising uncontrollable results as I notice in your photo too.

  54. I marvel at your cell phone camera!! Wow Judy - the difference in the photos with the sunglasses is amazing!!
I was just telling my husband the other day that I need to update my cell for one that has a descent camera!!
I also need to get out into the woods!! You have so much beauty all around your home!

  55. I have tried that before! It didn't turn out as well as yours, but I had my camera, not my phone. Yes, I am ready to hit the fall foliage tour here in Arkansas..just waiting on the leaves to turn a bit more.

I would have never thought of this experiment. Looks like it turned out very well.
I miss living in the country with lots of land to discover.
