Thought I'd add this late note: I was just on my way home and listening to the radio. They were talking about the deer situation in Wisconsin because deer gun season starts next Saturday in Wisconsin. As you may know, I dislike deer hunting. I love 'my' deer that eat in our fields and sleep in our yard or in the woods. BUT, I'm becoming more worried this year that this long winter will mean more deer starving. That's not a good thing.
We still have a lot of standing corn in our county. If we get much more snow, the farmers will have to wait until next spring to harvest it. I know that is not a good thing for the farmers, and I'm not happy about that. But because of it, there is a little glimmer of hope that the deer will find something nutritious to eat and survive (those who don't end up in people's freezers, that is.) And actually, I'd rather have the deer in someone's freezer than to have it die a slow death of starvation. I think you know that my issue is really with people who enjoy killing things, not those who hunt to eat.

Oh yes, just as all the cows have come home to eat, so has winter, it's arrival a bit too early for me, but it is a lovely adventure once again.

ReplyDeletei don't have a problem with hunting if it's for food. and thinning the deer population can be a good thing. but i know what you mean about 'your deer' being safe. :)
ReplyDeleteWell looks like you got it too. I don't think our snow will last (very wet), but never say never. We saw a gutted deer loaded on someone's trailer with their ATVs while driving on the highway last weekend. I guess hunting season already started here. Wendy x
ReplyDeleteI had no idea that cows 'shunned'.. poor little petunia all by himself, shunned by the herd. i wonder what he did... i love that snow pic with the sun in it. awesome shot... beautiful barn' it is not only the deer that have no food, Inger lives in the desert in CA and the bears are coming down looking for food, there drought has killed all the plants and animals.

ReplyDeleteI think we have a lot of corn that won't come out until spring. I know the hunting of the deer and the harvesting of the crop increases the number of animals that get hit on our highway.

What a change in just a week! The deer around here have decided to move into the pastures and paddocks with the cows and horses.
ReplyDeleteJudy, the men in my family hunt for the venison for sausage and other meats from the deer. It is really low in fat and can be really delicious. Right now some of the animals here in Texas are overcrowded, so the hunting really preserves life for the rest of them. I drove 25 miles and saw 4 of them dead from a car or truck hit. So sad.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photos! True hunters are reasonable conservationists. Of course there are always some real goobers out there with no respect for life of any kind. But they are few and far between. I hope you don't have many deer starving this winter. It's going to be a hard winter I think on all the animals.

ReplyDeleteNo one in my family hunts, but some in my family do like the taste of venison, so we butcher some of the deer our archer friends shoot. It's sad to see any creature starve to death or his/her life go to waste.

Where I live, we don't get harsh winters but whenever we get a little snow or icy days I think of the deer, too. I hate to think of that and I hope and pray they get to find food this Winter where you are and everywhere where there are harsh winters.

ReplyDeleteThe snow is beautiful. I have the same feelings about deer hunting. If the hunter is going to feed his/her family I'm ok with it. But those who hunt for sport disturb me! Hopefully the winter is not too brutal. Thank you for stopping by my blog!

The cow lineup is funny, considering that it is a view of their backside. November and April look about the same in your neck of the woods! And I don't mind hunting for food, though I do love our neighborhood deer.

We had snow also, last week, but it warmed up to the 40's this week and much of it melted.Many, many deer come though our area as we live very close to the foothills and wilderness. I love to watch them and feel honored when they sit in my yard. I feel so sad that some get hit by cars in our community --I wish people would be more careful. I'd never be a hunter. If I had to kill my food to eat I'd probably be a vegetarian. I hope the deer in Wisconsin fare well!
ReplyDeleteI always love a good barn picture. That's a nice feeding station for the cows. Even though there isn't much contrast in the view of your driveway in November vs. last April there must have been a lot more snow that had come down in between. We got over 200 inches of snow last winter. I'm looking forward to a brief warm up coming this weekend. I'm with you about the deer. On the 15th the guns could be heard around here as the firearm deer hunting season opened up.
ReplyDeleteLove the barn and the cow shot! JD used to be a deer hunter. He has retired. I do miss having the meat in the freezer though. But I, like you, prefer to see them in the fields.
