Hodgepodging a Lumber Baron Home of Eau Claire, WI

Our oldest son lives in south central Minnesota.
This is the sign in one of their windows.
I thought it was so sweet.

And this is the road that leads to the town they live in.
Lots of prairie with blowing snow and COLD temps.
More pics coming later.

1. Share one thing that really makes your day.

Phone calls or text messages from our kids.

Ooooh, chilly view!

2. Lots of these kinds of lists out there, but one found here says the fifteen most colorful places on earth are:

Vernazza, Cinque Terre, Italy~Burano, Italy~Havana, Cuba~Rio de Janiero, Brazil~Chefchaouen, Morocco~Balat, Istanbul, Turkey~Menton, France~Jodhpur, India~La Baca, Buenos Aires, Argentina~Guanajuato, Mexico~Capetown, South Africa~Valparaiso, Chile~Wroclaw, Poland~San Francisco, California~and Pelourhino, Salvador, Brazil.

Of those listed which would you most like to see up close and in person? Of all the places you've seen or traveled in your own life, what would you say was one of the most colorful?

The one I'd most like to see up close and in person (and accompanied by our daughter who is fluent in Italian!) is Cinque Terre, Italy. I've seen her photos, and they're wonderful.  The most literally colorful place I've been is probably Mexico City and particularly, the Ballet Folklórico de México. It was spectacular. But that was a long time ago, so it would be nice to see it again.

One of the old lumber baron homes in Eau Claire, WI
and a few more shots, also in this blog post.
When our daughter was visiting over New Year's,
we drove around the neighborhood where there are many of
these huge homes. We decided we'd buy this one
when our piggy bank is full.

3."Everything you want is on the other side of fear." Jack Canfield  In general, would you agree or disagree with that statement? Why?

It sounds good, doesn't it. But really. What do I fear? I fear getting too close to the center line on the highway. Just the other side of fear is a head-on collision. So really.  I do think that fear of many things keeps people from enjoying life like they were meant to do. But, with that in mind, I think that Everything you want is on the other side of Jesus. What I mean is that Jesus, the real historical first-century Jesus of Nazareth is the Doorway to all that the human spirit longs for. As God in the flesh, He alone can give us real Love, Joy, Hope, Relationship, and a Future. Ignore the Door, and life is a continuous frustrating search for satisfaction and fulfillment.

4. Imagine you're stranded on a desert island and dessert appears...what do you hope it is? Do you ever struggle to remember which spelling is desert and which is dessert?

No struggle here. I got dessert and desert straightened out a long time ago, fortunately. I think the ss makes the word look like it's got a couple squiggles of Reddi-Whip on it, so that might have been why it was so easy for me to sort it out.  Anyway, my favorite dessert would be lemon meringue pie like my mom used to make. Although the meringue was pretty, I usually scraped it off to get to the fabulous lemon underneath. P.S. And now, because of Reddi-Whip, you may never again get dessert and desert confused. You're welcome.

5. What song almost always makes you cry?

It's been a long time since I've cried from hearing a song, but it was probably the song, 'Before the Throne of God Above.'

 VERSE 1
Before the throne of God above
I have a strong and perfect plea A great High Priest whose name is love Who ever lives and pleads for me My name is graven on His hands My name is written on His heart I know that while in heav’n He stands No tongue can bid me thence depart No tongue can bid me thence depart

VERSE 2 When Satan tempts me to despair And tells me of the guilt within Upward I look and see Him there Who made an end of all my sin Because the sinless Savior died My sinful soul is counted free For God the Just is satisfied To look on Him and pardon me To look on Him and pardon me

VERSE 3
Behold Him there, the risen Lamb My perfect, spotless Righteousness The great unchangeable I AM The King of glory and of grace One with Himself, I cannot die My soul is purchased by His blood My life is hid with Christ on high With Christ my Savior and my God With Christ my Savior and my God

6. January is National Soup Month.  Everything from soup to nuts, in the soup, thick as pea soup, souped up...which saying most recently applies to your life in some way? Explain.

I think it would be 'soup to nuts,' because there's so much different stuff going in this month of January. I know it will fly by, so I'm making plans for February.

7. Write a two word note to your younger self. What does it say?

TODAY MATTERS!!!  (Sometimes I just have to yell at myself.)

8. Insert your own random thought here.

On Sunday, we brought one of our grandsons back with us from Minnesota.  On Monday, he helped me remove the tacking strips from the stairs after Mr. C. ripped out the old, worn, Plum Frieze from a lifetime ago. I'm serious. He and I made a lot of racket getting them out, but boy is it nice to have the job done and that ugly carpet GONE.

He likes being busy.
I need to find another interesting project.
I did discover that baking banana bread was not going to be
one of them, so I baked and he ate. :-)

it's always nice to read what someone thinks about interesting questions asked. I love that Victorian home that you and your daughter liked. We often drive through that kind of neighborhood in South Bend Indiana on our way to the VA clinic. I don't think I could ever pick a favorite, but I sure love a lot of them. It has always been my dream to live in one.

Grandkids are just the very best. Mine have always been more than happy to help with whatever project we have going.

Just to give you a snicker:

Years ago the boys spent the summer digging out our pond while we were at work. One day we came home and before we could see the progress of the day, my oldest grandson brought the camera so we could see a pic of it. They had placed a GI Joe in the hole standing next to the hole wall and said "Look how deep we got". It's always been one of my favorite memories of the early teen years.

I'm sure you're enjoying having a helper in the house. I guess he can always go outside and play in the snow. Looks like you've got plenty! There are lots of hymns that make me tear up too. Enjoy your day and time with your grandson!

I love the blog hopping aspect of Hodgepodge and checking out different answers. I like your two words and that house looks huge but really interesting.

That is a beautiful home! A much more ornate Queen Anne than I see daily. At first, I thought you were my person (according to Joyce) and I thought that that would be easy as I so often enjoy reading your weekly contributions to the Hodge Podge. What a great job done with the help of your grand. He probably loved it, too. It may go down as one of his favorite things ever at your place.

It's plenty cold and quiet here this morning. John has finally agreed to allow the plow man to come. That makes me very happy.

Judy, How wonderful that your grandson helped out. The song, "The Old Rugged Cross" has always brought tears to my eyes. Stay warm up there...it's cold here in Indy also. Blessings, xoxo,Susie

I love that you have to yell Today Matters to yourself! I am the exact same way!!! I am trying to make 2016 better and I tell myself that daily now!!! Just do today and make it count!!!! Great answers! I am following from Hodgepodge. You can follow me back at Annster's Domain if you want. I hope you have a great day and make today matter!!!

Hello, I would love to live in that home too. It is beautiful! Great questions and answers today. I have to look up images for the city in Italy. It is so nice of your grandson to help you out! Have a happy Wednesday!

Having a little helper around is always such a good thing! What a great answer to #3...I always enjoy your perspective, Judy. Today definitely does matter!

Judy, i would love to come and sit and visit with you. From your hodgepodges I see that we have many of the same interests and opinions. I love the CS Lewis quote, " We read to find that we are not alone." When I read my friend's blogs I know I am not alone in my opinions, even if it sometimes feels that way!! And that worship song is one of my favorites as well and that is saying something because I am more of a hymn girl. Another favorite of mine is He Knows My Name. My favorite hymn is And Can IT Be? The third verse is my favorite...my chains fell off my heart was free! What wonderful reassuring words in this day and time.

it is a lovely home! i like your carpet helper, too.

That old mansion is lovely - winning the Powerball should be enough to purchase it, right?

Judy, such a lovely post and responses. My favorite is #3. Your pictures look pretty cold, and I remember the January weather in the north very well. I'm staying south!

That is a great way to remember dessert and desert. I like it better than my way, which is to remember that dessert has MORE esses corresponding to MORE dessert. Yours is a prettier word picture (and less glutton-ish). I love a good mnemonic device. (And the word mnemonic.)

I also love the gorgeous house you have featured in this hodgepodge. ~swoon~

I have a special memory of the song that made you cry. It is of a little granddaughter singing it to us over the telephone in her sweet, clear voice and the rush of emotion as I rejoiced that she was learning these truths at her tender age. The words of this song are precious and true.

Mmm...lemon meringue pie...I could easily ask for that too on a desert island. I really liked your answer to #3. I just don't know anyone can get through life without Him. I love that wonderful hymn...one of my favorite lines is, My name is graven on His hands My name is written on His heart"...what comfort that is! Isn't it nice when the grandsons get old enough to come help out Grandma & Grandpa with those little projects? We have a couple waiting for some help with too :)

That sign that was in the window - the first picture - tells me so much about their life - that is truly wonderful. I am with you too - nothing makes my heart sign more than a call or text from one of the kids! Enjoyed your answers and photos!

I wondered if that beautiful arched window with the snow outside was yours, now i think it is since i see i on the stairs with the working grandson... i love that window. the house is just beautiful and it is a sweet sign in your sons window. none of todays question pertain to me, except i have missed a lot because of being fearful

Debbie said...

Enjoyed your hodgepodge. That view and that window are both spectacular! Couldn't agree more with number 3! And today certainly DOES matter! Your helper looks like a good one...can't wait to see what you put down. Enjoy your day!

That is a sweet sign in your sons window. I didn't think that fear was something that always held me back from things that I wanted. Lemon Meringue sounds good to me. Like your two word note to yourself. That's a lot of work on those stairs. How nice to have help.

That house is absolutely beautiful. I would love sitting on the porch, bundled under a blanket with a hot cup of tea! Lemon meringue is a favorite around here too. Love Reddi Whip and your trick :)

Judy, I told Vee that I always learn so much about you during your Hodge Podge posts. That's a beautiful home you and your daughter saw. I'm imagining a very large piggy bank for that one! How nice to have a grand that enjoys projects. That seems like the perfect job for him. You should give him school credit..maybe under vocational arts or something. Stay warm and cozy in your beautiful snow filled area. ♥

I would have baked that young man some banana bread too, after he did all that work!! I would also be looking around for another project...

I've never heard that song before, but the message is so beautiful.

I LOVE that house and want to sit on the front porch and watch the world go by!! How would you and your daughter like another partner in that piggy bank scheme? ;)

Beautiful post!!! One of my fav lines you have written: Jesus of Nazareth is the Doorway to all that the human spirit longs for. that is so true. We all hunger for Jesus but often don't recognize it as that and resort to all manner of foolishness and sin to fill that longing.

Also enjoyed the pictures of the lumber baron's home. Wow. Would love to tour through that!

I want to come visit when you purchase that home! Enjoy your time with grandson.

I see these posts and know it's Wednesday. Wow you did do a project with your grandson! Quite a helpful boy. I too love that song and it might be one that brings tears. My husband's favorite was always lemon merangue pie until he had the chance to have one all to himself, or maybe just with a friend. He probably hasn't had a slice of one since. (that was back in college.)

Those houses are gorgeous!

I always enjoy reading your hodgepodge answers. What a blessing that grandson is...I only have one grandchild but wonder how I lived before she came into our life. It is a good thing we don't know what we are missing.

So agree about hearing from our kids, too.

I just have to say that music can make me cry quicker than anything...even an instrumental such as the one here in this post.

Judy, I love your helper. And I could use him right now. Send him over. I'll keep him busy. :D Doesn't it feel good to do a little updating around the house? We're working on our bedroom right now.

I like the sign you found, too. How nice to have your grandson to help out with those carpet strips. I have some bananas on the counter that need to be banana bread. It's going to be very cold for the next few days, maybe I'll get some made.
