February and Three Dog Nights

Can't wait to be looking at Dragon Wing Begonias!
(But that would be June, not February)

Scenes from our home and neighborhood

Here in NW Wisconsin, we pretty much go with a monochromatic color scheme from November through March! You can see that our bright red picnic table was trying to give us a bit of color, but...

I don't understand why the dog likes to be out when it's MINUS 17 degrees F. as it was Saturday.  I make sure to call her in after a few minutes, but she seems to think it's her responsibility to bark at the birds, squirrels, bunnies, and any passing vehicles before settling in for her morning nap on her bed in the library.

Then there are the ice fisherpeople.

They drill a hole in the ice and stand in the cold for hours.
Do they not know that fish is available at the grocery store?

See the open water not far from where they're standing?

Accidents do happen:

At least they hadn't driven their vehicles out onto the ice,
as some folks at Lake Geneva did.
Photo from Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, February 6
It seems this wasn't such a great place to park after all.

Februaries Past

I'm missing Bridger and Misty (above), both now gone. Really, we've been having three dog nights here lately, and we're down to ONE DOG.  :-(   Carla from The River Flowing blog had a great idea, but I'm afraid Mr. C. has steeled himself against any suggestion of a GSD puppy. Thanks anyway for trying, Carla. xo

One sweet and happy dog.
She doesn't mind getting all the attention.

P.S. The Good News Is:  It's supposed to be in the 30s this week, so I think our cold spell is over. I'm looking forward to an upward trend in the temps.

  1. What a lovely post, Judy! I know so well what you mean with a monochromatic colour scheme... and ice fishing is popular here as well, even though less than say 20-30 years ago. The swimming cars are an impressive sight! Oh, your dog looks really very happy and cute. <3
    Have a great week ahead!

  2. Good morning, Judy! Lovely images from your winter wonderland. I love your sweet dog and miss mine terribly. The swimming cars are a scary sight. I worry about my hubby walking on our frozen lake here, I think he is crazy. Your flowers are pretty, hoping for an early spring.
Happy Monday, enjoy your new week!

  3. At least your dog will go out in the snow, when it's cold ours does his business right outside the kitchen door on the deck. I've seen photos in our local paper of ice huts sinking in the lake, people always push the weather, don't they?
I love the last photo of your old gal, just makes me want to kiss her on the nose right on my screen. Our dog who will be 13 this year is enjoying sunny days by the pool but he would never go in the water. I believe the break from winter is doing him as much good as it does us.

  4. we are also down from 3 to one...and we sure miss Baby and cooper. he he he on fish at the store since that is what i have said to bob many times.. i saw the Lake Genva nuts on TV, but this photo is better than the one the news showed. it will never happen to me, i can tell you that. i can't beleive laying in the snow on purpose...

  5. Lots of vehicles land in the lakes here, too. I don't like being out on the ice this time of year, but numerous ice fishermen spend the day in their shelters.

  6. Looks like we are having the same cold, snowy weather. It does look lovely but the white needs some color soon!

  8. I sometimes think the big furry dogs are more prone to being out in the cold than they are out in our humid heat here in Florida. I see folks walking or running with their dogs and the tongues are hanging out and most of them just look miserable. Not to mention the pavement is HOT here in the summer months (well, March-November). Love the photos! I don't mind looking at pictures of snow! :)

  9. It's been a strange winter. I'm happy it was cold today. I've had some great treks on the wetland, though.

  10. Hello! I'm excited for spring and blossoms and summer and the smell of freshly mowed grass! But we do have a while for all that, you're right. Your winter photos are pretty though, one has to appreciate winter when we live here! Your pup is so cute, and one of my dogs, Misty part black lab is just like that. She runs out and rolls in the snow, even when it's icy snow! I hope you have a great week ahead!

  11. i love your sweet pup. oh, those silly folks parking on the lake!

  12. Very mean of me to giggle at the sight of the cars gracefully sinking into the water!

  13. How terrifying--those cars falling into the water. I love your snow pictures. Of course we never get enough of it--or any often--down here. That middle photo of the road through the trees is amazing! Stay warm! Getting over our cold snap here too.

  14. Brrr Judy, I'm cold just looking at that.

The cars in the icy water gives me the heebie jeebies. That's so scary!

  15. Your snowy photos sure are prettier than mine...if I would have taken any. We got another "snow" last night...one whole inch, followed by sleet (again) and it's freezing drizzling now. Not very photogenic :( I don't understand the ice fishing thing either but I do understand what it's like to miss a fur baby who is no longer here. In a few weeks, it will be a year when we lost our Hunter. And of course, Oscar is happier than a clam that he doesn't have to share our attention with him. Stay warm and have a good week, Judy :)

  16. We have been watching the temperatures at our second home in Chicagoland and believe me it is nice to be here in South Florida this time of year. Like your puppy, our daughter's Tibetan Mastiffs just love the NE Illinois snow.

  17. We have the same colors around here today. It won't be around for long as we're supposed to see the 50's this week! Stay warm and cozy, Judy. Please don't drive across a lake! ♥

  18. Bless your heart Judy and I mean that in a good way!! I cannot imagine that kind of cold. Come see me...70 on Saturday!!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Oh my, that IS cold! We have some neighbors near our southern Utah home who come from Wisconsin every year to spend the winter months. Now I can see why!! While we don't have summer weather, it was 70 degrees today.

  20. Beautiful photos Judy! Here's hoping the cold spells are good and done!!

I'm with you about the ice fishing and the grocery store comment made me giggle, as I think the exact same thing! Lol

Your sweet doggies - the ones in heaven and your current baby. I'm still going to secretly hope on your GS puppies though. ;)

Blessings for a great (& warm) week ahead neighbor. xoxo

  21. It sounds so cold there and I've been complaining about it being in the teens here, but without the minus! I agree with you on the ice fishing, a trip to the grocery store would be a whole lot less trouble! :) Don't know what to think of those that drive on the ice. Your doggie is a sweetie! Stay warm and have a nice week!

  22. The monochromatic color scheme is quite pretty, although I can imagine that you're weary of it!

That photo of the cars sinking into the frozen water? That packs a visual punch! Yikes!!

I know you miss your dear doggie-friends. :(

  23. Couldn't resist a post title with 'dog nights' in it! Yes, I totally know the loveliness of hearing that big dog sigh of warm, sleepy contentment at night,... times three it must have been even better. No wonder you miss them.
It's cold here, but nothing like the snow you are having. It will be gone before long...and you will see colours again! The snow pics are very beautiful.

  24. My dearest Judy,
I'd love to have all that snow here in Northern Italy where this years we haven't seen even a little snowflake, it's so very unusual !
All the photographs of yours are so very wonderful, but, honestly, that with the 'swimming cars' scared me a lot !

Sending blessings on the days to come,
with so much love and gratitude
    Dany

  25. Hi Judy
We were down to one very old dog. I saw new carpet on the horizon. I retired and in walked two pups. I love em but carpet does not appear to be in the near future anymore.

Your winter pics are nice but I am so ready for Spring...as I am EVERY year when the first snow falls.

Our old dog is like yours...I can't believe he wants to be outside. The Boxer Pit mix wants to be there too as long as he has company. The Boxer..hates the cold and won't walk on ice...he hates the rain too. Any other time he wants to be where the critters call!

  26. Best to be warm indoors I think....
    Happy Tuesday!

Roll on the warmer days of Spring ...

  29. Mollie loves being out in this as well..Go figure!!! Parking on the ice is nuts to begin with but all in the same place??? I still prefer winter to the heat of summer...Enjoy your day..

    ReplyDelete
  30. Ohhh my!!! So cold!!! Crazy, all those cars breaking through the ice!! Just wouldn't be able to bring myself to park on a frozen pond!!! It's amazing how much our pups mean to us and become an important part of our family!!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Here we have forecasts of 50 degrees! I not sure if we all believe it yet.....
Our pup Kerri loves being out in the snow too. She digs and tunnels in it, even if there is only 3"!

  32. Judy...You got way more snow than we did. I need to stop complaining. Purdy photos as always. Those fellows are way too close to the water to suit me. I hope their feet are firmly planted on tera firma. The sweetest photo of all has to be the one of our baby in the show. That one pulls at the old heart strings. By the way, I subscribed to the Episcopal News and am enjoying reading it. Thanks for telling me about it. Once an Episcopalian, always an Episcopalian.

  33. Oh those cars in the river/lake! How scary. A young man drowned in Nova Scotia on the weekend when a group of 12 snowmobilers went onto a lake that wasn't frozen enough. Several broke through but were rescued. So tragic. It's nice to see all your wintry scenes past and present. We just got through that very cold snap yesterday and today it's warm as spring with a big rain storm coming tonight. Strange weather this winter. Take care. Pam

  34. Our monochromatic color scheme is wearing me out! lol We have had enough snow day, thus far. We have four dogs, but three of them are approaching their 13 &14 year marks.

    ReplyDelete
  35. It does look cold there, Judy! We've been having a warm spell on the front range and all our snow has melted. There were a couple days we did not even need to wear a coat! I know it won't last, but it has been a nice break.

PS: I don't understand ice fishing either! I think some men just like to get out of the house any way they can..lol

  38. We have sure not had the cold that you have had, and I don't even think what is normal for us. We have 30s this week...
    I love that collage....

  39. Hi Judy,
Well, that Mr. C! What are we going to do with him. ;-)
I liked this post. You summed up the crazy of Wisconsin Winters!
I still can not believe what happened at Lake Geneva.

  40. Very pretty snowy scenes! Wouldn't you love to be a fly on the wall when those people called home for a ride? I can hear the conversation now....'What happened to the car, honey?' Lol! Always sad to lose our sweet furry companions. Now you can give all that love to your lucky little buddy. Sounds like he is a great watchdog, too! x Karen

  41. Your dog really seems to have fun in the snow... My cats hate the cold. It's about 5°C (about 40°F), which for us here is unusually cold, and the cats decided to stay in!

  42. Judy, I am looking at your snow pictures and loving them all and I wish it would snow here, but I see that it's not always nice when accidents happen. Love this picture of your dog enjoying the snow. I can't believe it's that cold where you live. Bundle up and stay warm, Judy.

  43. LOL Only one dog on a 3-dog night! Somebody's feet are getting cold. Also laughed at ice-fishing--yes, it can be bought at the store. Feel bad for those who are used to parking on thick ice. That's a rude awakening. Store-bought would have been a whole lot cheaper than that!
