I don't know why I am so fond of these critters, but at least a few times a year I like to go to the Colfax, WI neighborhood and check on the herd of Highland cattle that live just south of Highway 64 on M.
This sequence of three photos (above) cracks me up. It's as though he were playing to an audience. What a wild and hairy fella, and a bit cheeky, if you ask me.
Those heavy coats are perfect for our NW Wisconsin winter weather.
(Good grief, we awoke (awakened? woke up to?) to -15F this morning!)
Aren't they the cutest things! And I understand that Highland cattle are quite docile. I'm sure I need one or two of these handsome beasts on our farm. What do you think?

ReplyDeleteI do love their looks. I have never gotten such good photos as you of the Highland cattle down the road from me. I need to try harder. lol And, YES, your do need a couple of those cool guys at your place!
ReplyDeleteThey probably remember you from previous visits and decided to put on a little show! Looks like a good coat for frigid weather.
ReplyDeletesuch neat cattle! and i've recently been told by someone who raises them, 'they're the best tasting beef, ever!' :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a great series of photos. I have a dear friend who is Scottish and goes home to Scotland every year. She always sends me a postcard, and photo of these Highland Cows. Enjoyed yours very much.
ReplyDeleteAn exceptional breed!!! One I've never seen before. Mighty handsome. And perfect for today's fences.
ReplyDeleteYES they are cute and adorable and well dressed for the weather. i vote you get at least 2.. they look like they descended from prehistoric cows.
ReplyDeleteYou just want to hug 'em. ;-)
ReplyDeleteWild, hairy and cheeky? Typical Scot... which explains why you're so fond of the Hielan' Coo. (Highland Cow.) Have an absolutely lovely weekend!
ReplyDeleteHow amazing! They look like something from the prehistoric times...like the ice age! lol Stay warm today! We got into the 30s last night and almost froze to death! haha! Hugs, Diane
ReplyDeleteI love that shaggy bunch too!! First saw them on the Hamish Macbeth tv series. Those horns are rather alarming though!!
ReplyDeleteWhat?!! Did you say -15F? Brrrr...
ReplyDeleteYes, those babies need their furry coats! And so do you!!
The Highland guys are some big boys! I'm glad to hear they are docile. Surely they could break through that fence in a minute! Stay warm, Judy! ♥
ReplyDeleteI love the Highland cattle. We have a farm up the street that has a few. We are going to have below 0 weather here a couple of nights and not much warmer during the days. It will be back up to the teens after so I think I can deal with that. I will stay in the house and sew. Hugs, LJ
ReplyDeleteHe's a charmer and well suited to bear the cool climate.
ReplyDeleteOh he gave me a giggle!! Love them...they really are very cool looking. And with our weather lately I sure wish I had a coat like theirs. I'm so over below zero temps - ugh!!
ReplyDeleteI think you definitely need one of these fellow for yourself Judy. Just sayin'. ;)
Blessings. xoxo
ooooh "my, what big horns you have"!!!! love farms, adore farm animals!!! beautiful colors in your captures!!!!!
ReplyDeleteVery fun post, I just adore them!
ReplyDeleteOh, I would be visiting them, too. I don't have any here close, but seen one or two somewhere in our rambling drives. Or what I thought was a least part Highland...
ReplyDeleteFirst off....-15 is Brrrrrr
ReplyDeleteSecond....Those Highland cattle are amazing.
I agree he's a "cheeky" fellow but of so fun. - Oh yeah there were fences too!
Love the 'highland cattle' and wonderful photos of them, the hay and fence ~
ReplyDeleteHappy Weekend to you ~ ^_^
Awesome wonderful creatures that remind me a bit of the woolly mammoth drawings! We have none as far as I know in my neck of the woods. :)
ReplyDeleteThey are mellow fellows. Ann has taken me to see some; could be the same ones. I never know where we are in WI.
ReplyDeleteHighland cattle are beautiful creatures with their shaggy coats and long curved horns. The first time I ever saw them was in Prince Edward Island when I was a girl. I think I even have a photo of them. You are in the deep freeze that is headed our way tomorrow for the weekend. It is going to be a very cold one for sure!
ReplyDeleteWake, woke, woken, I think I might have stayed in bed ;))! That guy really is posing for you, it's as if he's saying look what I can do, aren't I cute! And he is! Wonderful ... I'd want to go visit often too. He actually reminds me of the musk oxen we saw in Alaska ... I loved them.
ReplyDeleteI think a few of those critters in your fields are just the thing you need! I'm seeing them with chickens running free-range around their hooves.... :)
ReplyDeleteMinus 15°s - oh my gosh!!
These Highland cattle are truly gorgeous and so very sweet, they're such wonderful creatures !
ReplyDeletethank you for sharing their simpathy with us ... actually you've a quite cold Winter, haven't you ?
Take care, darling Judy and, please, give a kiss to your assistant for me =^..^= !!
Have a wonderful day, sweetie,
sending blessings to you

Great photos. Those cattle are huge. Good thing they are docile ;-)
ReplyDeleteWhat great creatures! Glad they made it into Good Fences!
ReplyDeleteWhat a personality! I don't blame you for being fascinated with them. Gorgeous animals.
ReplyDeleteJudy, they ARE cute! Maybe it's the whole Call of the British Isles thing attracting you?
ReplyDeleteawesome
ReplyDeleteYes, i think you should get one! I'm told they are popular as 'pets', because they're docile and self-sufficient.
ReplyDeleteLove your photos! And, we are expecting temps just as cold as you have this weekend. Burr!
ReplyDeleteAt least one of these beasts would be warm in your cold temperatures, quite the shaggy coat. If it makes you feel better I could see my breath this morning walking the dog, it was rather chilly for Florida. However, it warmed up and I went in the pool this afternoon to exercise. Yup, I am Canadian and do crazy things like this. lol
ReplyDeleteThose horns - aren't they wonderful.
ReplyDeleteGreat photo's you've shared, thank you.
All the best Jan
If I had a farm I would get me some Highland Cattle so I could look at them all day long! I never saw one. They are my new second Fave. Bison will always be first in my heart.
ReplyDeletexx, Carol
I have nothing against cows, but am not their biggest fan either, but I adore Highland Cattle too! Especially seeing them in the snow which somehow just seems like their perfect and rightful setting doesn't it. They seem to me to be the perfect sort of cow! No idea why!! Happy Valentines! xx
ReplyDeleteOf course you need two and some chickens...but most of all a German Shepard puppy!! Come on Mr. C, a perfect Valentine's for Mrs. C.
ReplyDeletexxx ooo

With horns like those, it is good that they are docile. Yes, just think if the photo ops at the ready if you purchased a small herd. Is it possible to rent out a pasture?
ReplyDeleteI am so weary of auto correct fixing pronouns for me...couldn't be fat fingers striking again.
ReplyDeleteWell, I have never seen such a thing! Cute.
ReplyDeleteYou can't just have one..Gorgeous horns..We are dipping down to zero on Valentines Day..Then up to 50 next Friday..This weather is nuts..Happy Valentines Day Judy..
ReplyDeleteThose are some hairy cattle! Their coats do look like they'd keep them warm. Fun shots.
ReplyDeleteOH I thought it was cold here until I read this!
ReplyDeleteLove the warm, lovely and furry cattle
Good morning, I do love these pretty cows. Great shots. Thank you for linking up and sharing your post. Happy Saturday, enjoy your weekend!
ReplyDeleteThis is really a great post! You know I love critters. ❤
ReplyDeleteRight from the first photo, I was thinking that they are well dressed for the winter weather! Yes, I think they are handsome.
ReplyDeleteHappy Valentines Day!
Lea
I know why you are fond of these critters, they're neat looking! Thanks for sharing at The Barn Collective and please hurry back.
ReplyDeleteThey are just such awesome critters...especially in the snow!
ReplyDeleteI love these critters! My late client had some appear in his backyard one day. It was so funny.
ReplyDeleteThese fellers scare me to death. They may be docile, but they look like they are very temperamental to me. Ducks and chickens are more my friends. Their heavy coats are impressive. They look like no matter how low the tens got they would be just fine. Love the sequence of the shots and the little story you told. That was fun
