Now:
On to the Strangest Story Ever Told
(Well, maybe.)
You remember Audrey? The sweet, pregnant cat who showed up at our farm about a month ago? Remember that last week we took her to the vet and the vet figured there'd be kittens within a few weeks? Remember that she was healthy, no ear mites, no fleas, and that we then brought her indoors to live with us? Remember that we were awaiting the birth of those kittens? Huh??
Well, I was upstairs yesterday morning when Mr. C. suddenly appeared, looking like THIS:
What?
What??
What???
And there were two more,
that had somehow made their way to the house
from wherever they had been,
(maybe the barn?)
and were sitting on the opposite side of the patio door.
Actually, the first two appeared at the same time.
We heard a third, but had to let Audrey out
to find that one.
Now mother and babies (teenagers??)
are doing fine.
The first two, eating cat food, for Pete's sake!
Audrey, doing the catly thing
Audrey, licking her kittens and
letting them nurse.
This was just the most bizarre thing. We've had Audrey in the house since a week ago today. She had shown up at our place about September 27, and because we fed her, she would always come to the porch for food, water, and attention. Some people thought she looked pregnant, but she must already have delivered her kittens. When we took her to the vet on October 20, we were told that it certainly looked like she was going to have kittens. After worming her that day, the next day we brought her into the house to live.
She never howled like she wanted to go out, although about 5 o'clock each morning she would meow loudly a few times, and only once did she sit and stare at the door.
How did the kittens survive during the past week? Had she left them a squirrel or something? We know she was a good hunter.
Why hadn't her milk dried up?
How did the kittens make their way to the house?
After a week without their mother, the kittens all look roly poly and healthy.
How did the kittens make their way to the house?

The earth is the Lord's, and all that is in it.

Praise God for so many miracles in our lives each day, most of which we don't even notice.

Why did we let our James Herriot vet retire??
Wouldn't you love to see this little guy
in your Christmas stocking??
You know you would.
Your eyelids are getting heavy.
You want a kitten.

With The Three Little Kittens,
I'm gobsmacked. Could there be another mother out in your barn who took over feeding? This is a mystery. I would look around again in case you have two momma's. I'm shocked your vet could not see that she was a nursing mom. She may be very young herself and easily able to walk away from the kittens. Well. if those darling babes were alone and not fed for a week they sure are resilient little things. I wish I was closer to be talked into taking one. Bless you guys for taking care of the family.
ReplyDeleteBtw, Judy, I'm having to follow this story because it truly is a mystery how these kittens look so healthy.
ReplyDeleteJudy, What an incredible story. I would be looking for more kittens and maybe another mom cat. I loved that sweet kitten face. Blessings to you and the new family. xoxo, Susie
ReplyDeleteOMGOSH!!! How can that be? Are there other cats around the place-another nursing mother that would have deposited them by your door? They sure are healthy looking and so cute. I wish I could take one but I can't at this time. I am glad mom and babies are reunited...now the fun will begin with the little curtain climbers. xo Diana
ReplyDeleteMy eyes are not happy and I do not want a kitten but they are adorable. I can't stop smiling what a precious story and I am so glad it had a happy ending because it could have been a very bad ending. I am thinking now that maybe?
ReplyDeleteWhat an incredible story. It's a good thing I am not close to where you live! They are all precious! Bless you for all that you've done for these kitties.xoxo
ReplyDeleteThis is a mystery indeed, perhaps an auntie has been caring for them? I like cats and always had two growing up but hubby is allergic to them which is why I have a small not-shedding dog. Audrey appears to be a good and loving mother.
ReplyDeleteThat is quite a story...and yes, quite a surprise!! Oh, they are darling!! I don't dare show Bekah or she will want to drive from Maryland to Wisconsin to get one...or three.
ReplyDeleteKeep us posted! This story has a lot of twists!
That is a strange story Judy and I have all the questions that you mentioned!!:)
ReplyDeleteoh, my goodness! a week without mother?!?! and they're healthy!!!
ReplyDeleteMany of you are asking about another cat, but we've never seen another cat around our place. This is truly a mystery!
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like one for Inspector Morse. I know little about these things, but need to ask if they all had the same father. In any event, it is a wonderful story and I loved the photos, especially the one of the three kittens feeding. Even Mrs B, who is normally unmoved by cats of any description, liked the pictures - and I'm sure I heard a muted "Aaahh, cute" as she scrolled through your post. Are you going to give your vet a chance to explain before you find a new one?
ReplyDeleteGot me wondering also. I can't believe the Vet didn't see that she had already had kittens. ?? They are cute though.
ReplyDeleteAwwww....what a precious story. And, yes, that orange kitten needs to come live with me! 😊
ReplyDeleteThat is rather bizarre...and I would love a kitten if I hadn't developed allergies a few years ago. We had two when the girls were growing up along with our beloved golden retriever, Buddy. Once the cats passed though, we couldn't get another due to the allergies. Now we have my sweet Tucker and I know he would love a kitty friend. :) I entered for the giveaway already. Can I enter another hundred times? LOL
ReplyDeleteI'm guessing Audrey moved two of the kittens in the house before you put her in confinement. From the size of the kittens, I'm guessing when she disappeared for a time was when she gave birth. Good to see a happy reunion.
ReplyDeleteHmm, the vet does have some explaining to do.
Wow - that is definitely a 'god thing'! Wish I was near, I would take one as my beloved kitty passed last August.
ReplyDeleteWhat an amazing story, Judy! I thought she'd had the kittens yesterday or something, but to find out she'd already had them and they survived? What a miracle that they found their way to your door! They are absolutely adorable and if I wasn't allergic...oh, I would want one! Congratulations. So glad they are reunited!
ReplyDeleteWOW...I'm with you...how did they survive without their mom for a whole week. They are definitely adorable.
ReplyDeleteWell, that Audrey is full of surprises! She truly knows how to take good care of her babies. She picked the right home to adopt! She's quite the stealthy one. ♥
ReplyDeleteOh my that is the sweetest story ever! Love those kitties!
ReplyDeleteGod is so good!
ReplyDeleteThis is the best story, full of mystery and intrigue and miracles. I guess you know that she didn't slip out of the house at all…and of course she didn't pump to keep up her milk supply (only a baby nurse would give that comment :-) ) … Well you'll be talking about this one for a long time! Her tabby kit looks just like our kitten when we lived in Africa, that our boys named Ponee, who had children way too young. Keep us updated if you figure anything out!
ReplyDeleteThis is one of the most amazing stories I've read in a long time! Oh my gosh!! This is worthy of sending to Reader's Digest! The kittens are SO cute and momma looks so happy to have her babies back. Maybe she just needed a little rest! LOL Please let us know how all of this progresses!!
ReplyDeleteJudy, what a sweet story! I love kittens! God was certainly looking out for those darling kittens.
ReplyDeleteJudy, HELLO! I just saw that you visited my blog...thank you so much! I know what you mean about embracing winter and "always winter, never Christmas!" But I had to get used to it and my busy teaching schedule fortunately keeps me so occupied that I literally trudge through winter then have my time off in the summer. So far, so good here with high temps in the 70s but with the lovely colors!
ReplyDeleteIt's so nice to see you on your sidebar with your "assistant!" You are a beautiful woman and your country life has great appeal. Your Instagram photos are marvelous and I do hope that one day you can make a trip out this way to enjoy what the Twin Cities have to offer!
Be well and enjoy a great weekend! Anita
While I was replacing an upstairs window in a bedroom we watched as our grandma cat carried her cats up on the roof, over the top peak roof and then into the open window. When she was done she took them all downstairs and put them under a rocking chair. They, of course, didn't stay put and wandered all over the living room. Your story is remarkable. She must have nursed them to be so fat that they lived off of that.
ReplyDeleteWow! What a mystery! Unless there is another nursing momma kitty that adopted these wee ones for a while, it's amazing that they survived! And how did they know where to find their mother? I can't believe the vet didn't notice the mother was nursing! I love kitties, but I couldn't take these sweeties as much as I adore them. We already have too many now. There are 2 kittens outside we need to find homes for, they are just now getting weaned from their mother. I'm happy you are taking good care of this little family! Hope you find good homes for them.
ReplyDeleteAw! This is such a happy ending! I'm so glad that it all turned out well. My goodness, what a sweet surprise! Those little kittens surely had a guardian angel :) Now I am angry at whoever dropped them off. Some people are so heartless. Thank goodness you have a kind heart. xx Karen
ReplyDeleteA,azing story and the Kittens are adorabe
ReplyDeleteHello, that is an amazing story. I am glad the kittens were ok and all are doing well. They have a good home. Happy Saturday, have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteWell that is weird. So no kittens on their way as they are already here. Three of them?
ReplyDeleteI have my own kitten story to tell, but I'm not feeling so chipper about it as you are about yours.
Oh my . . .
ReplyDeleteBest ever . . .
Not sure how the "littles" survived . . .
But . . . I believe in miracles.
Aren't they just the cutest . . .
And the vet????
Great post for Eileen's Saturday's Critters too!
ReplyDeleteWonderful surprise...and so tame..great find ! Nothing cuter than kittens and puppies. Enjoy

Hello, I am just stopping back to say thank you for linking up and sharing your post. The kittens are adorable. Enjoy your Saturday and the weekend!
ReplyDeleteThat is a really kitty mystery!
ReplyDeleteThose kittens are so cute with their sweet little faces, and are perfect for Saturdays Critters! What a mystery your story is though, maybe there is another mother out in the barn?? however it looks like Audrey is the real mother here and she looks totally comfortable with the three little kittens.
ReplyDeleteGoodness! What an incredible story.
ReplyDeleteI love your photo's too.
All the best Jan
Love the story of the three little kittens and Mama Audrey.
