I'm posting a few more photos from last weekend out at our son's family's home in central Minnesota, where we stayed after the graduation party for our granddaughter. It was lovely, and of course I had to see the chickens.
The chickens, Buff Orpingtons and Silver Laced Wyandottes, have a really nice chicken hotel (some would call it a coop) and a two-part run, one part with hardware cloth over the grass so that the chickens can't destroy the roots of the grass. Isn't that smart! Yeah, I thought so. Here's our grandson feeding them bites of his sugar cookie. They were pretty happy about that. Actually, I requested it so that the hens would turn towards the camera.
Our son chose these breeds because of their cold-weather hardiness, their egg production, and their nice temperament.
This was a drive-by shot that I took on the way home, and would have been so much better had that sweet little spruce not been in the way. It looks like the old windmill has been turned into an antenna tower.

ReplyDeleteThe chickens are just beautiful. I never really thought of chickens as that good looking until non-farmering people started having them as egg-producing pets. Maybe they bathe them often? Anyway, they all look good!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful colors have your chickens. I the village where I grew up there where also nice chickens: The Barnevelder. Do you know them? It's a Dutch breed of domestic chicken. It resulted from cross-breeding between local Dutch chickens and various "Shanghai" birds imported from Asia.
ReplyDeleteI think the Orpingtons are beautiful as well ... more golden than buff. And I always love your photos of barns. I thought this one very lovely even with the spruce tree in the photo.

ReplyDeleteLove the pictures. The chickens are fantastic. I often worry about the animal kingdom who live up in the frozen tundra area of the country. :) I'm glad to know there are chickens who can weather the...weather. Ha! Those grandkids live in what looks like a wonderful place to grow up.

ReplyDeleteThere are some attractive chickens and some that lay colourful eggs. I had thought I'd like a couple until I read and reviewed a book about gardening with chickens. Sure they'll eat slugs but everything else too and dig up your prized plants.

Now that explained a few things about the breeds my niece has. She also has Orpingtons and Wyandottes and I really like visiting them because they seem to love having me show up with the watermelon rinds, celery, and odd bits of salad. Always nice to be welcomed. I'm sending over a couple of stalks of rhubarb today...no leaves! Chickens really are pretty. I knew that my niece liked her chickens a lot when she took one to the vet, which we all know costs a small fortune.

I'm with you and the hens, summer over winter. ;) They are beautiful chickens! Love the family photos, too! Especially the panter and the thinker. We could use a little puff of your cooler air. they are really pretty chickens and I like their hotel/coop. you can tell your grandchildren your blog friend lived in a converted chicken cook for the first 8 years of my life. a little bigger than their hotel but not by much. minus chickens of course... until I started blogging I did not know that chickens will eat anything and everything and they even kill and eat spiders. they also eat rats that the cats kill. I saw that on a blog with my own eyes. who knew. I thought they only ate corn. beautiful photo of the barn..
ReplyDeleteThanks for the explanation of the chickens. We are at our son's home right now and they are down to one chicken. They'll have to buy a new group for the future. Something has been killing off the chickens one by one.

ReplyDeleteSuch wonderful pictures of family, pretty chickens and the beautiful old barnyard! I had bantams when I was young - 'Buff Cochins' that look similar to these. I had 3 of them and they would roost on my pony's back every night. Love the photo of 'A boy and his dog'. So cute! xx Karen
