And one more thing...

If you follow @cranberrymorning on Instagram, you already know how deliriously excited I was so see this huge load of logs pull up the driveway the other day. What you're looking at is 4 years' worth of heat for our house. Mr. C. calls them his solar collectors. I call them avoiding the 'widow makers' in the woods!  I probably never told you that back in the spring of 2005, when Mr. C was out cutting in the west woods one day, a tree snapped back and rendered him unconscious in an instant. Our youngest son, who had been with him at the time, ran to to the house, burst into the door, and yelled that Dad had been hurt.  When I got to the site, Mr. C. was lying on the ground, a pool of blood forming under his head, and his color turning gray. I knew this was it.

But praise God, this wasn't it! Although it took the ambulance a HALF HOUR to get here while my husband lay there unconscious, a first responder who lives nearby was here soon. He did all the necessary things that first responders do, and when the ambulance finally arrived, I rode with them to the nearest hospital, where they examined Mr. C. and put him in a helicopter for a nice, expensive ride to Eau Claire.

While still at the local hospital emergency room, Mr. C. momentarily regained conscious-ness, told me was that he was sorry, and to call the insurance company. I did, and I was terrified. But I honestly had the assurance that no matter what, God was with us.

After a few days in the hospital in Eau Claire and a watchful eye on my dangerous husband, the doctors released him to go home, with instructions to NOT WORK. It had been a serious concussion, and all the blood was from an extensive scalp wound.  It did take quite some time for him to recover fully, and the odd thing is that the tree gave him 20/20 vision, although the upper right quadrant of his vision is still double after all this time. That won't change.

So you see how grateful I am that God spared my husband and why I've hated it when he has gone out to the woods in subsequent years to fell trees. (Will he listen to me???)  But this year he ordered a load of wood. It truly makes my heart happy.

Probably a couple sons and Mr. C. will soon be busy with chainsaws, cutting and then splitting and stacking all that wood. All in anticipation of the following scene:

 Lucky Mr. C.
He is ONE GOOD MAN!

 General Longstreet enjoying the fire
Actually, when I did a search for 'fire' in my photo archives, this popped up.
I was sure you'd want to see it. LOL
All those crazy reflections from two of our living room walls and the fire!

Tommy and Smokey enjoying the fire last Christmastime
Do you see Smokey? She's looking at you.

And of course our 1915 Home Comfort
kitchen range, which we fire up on especially cold days.
I love that old beast.

So, winter is really cozy at our house.

Funny how even 'cozy' can get old after six months. :-)

  1. That is quite a lot of wood. Glad Mr. C doesn't have to cut and split it by himself. We had a wonderful wood stove that we put in our house in Columbia. Rarely did the heat pump come on which extended its life considerably. When we built our "retirement home" in the woods we thought we would also have a wood burning fireplace but then after discussing where would the wood pile be and where would we stack the wood we brought in, it didn't make sense. We were not planning to heat the house with it since we had radiant floor heating throughout. We went with a gas. No fireplace or wood stove here now in our apartment but there are 3 in the building where we can sit to enjoy a fire come wintertime.

  2. Hello, that looks like a lot of wood to split and stack. I am glad your Mr C. was ok, that sounded like a scary time. We have a wood stove in our basement, it can heat the house if we let it, it gets too hot. Happy Friday, enjoy your day and weekend!

  3. when the photo of the log truck came up, my hair stood on end, my mother and I never ever never rode behind or beside one of the log haulers. they are common in GA and several times we saw in the news where the chains broke and the logs rolled on cars... glad you got Mr. C out of the woods, but that chain saw is even more dangerous. my brother is a log lover, always has had wood for fireplaces, stacked around his house and ready. he cut them with chain saws and hatches and axes. one day the chain saw slipped and nearly cut his leg off. Just so you know, Mr C is still in danger out there... when bob uses the chain saw I hold the phone ready to dial 911. so glad he survived the accident and wow on the new vision.

  4. As we get older, we need to take advantage of helpers.lol We have some little plants growing in our gutters at Grimmwood and I told Marvin that we will hire someone to clean them and put on Gutter Guards. He is not getting up on a ladder. I have heard of so many accidents that led to death or disability that I am pretty cautious. Glad you are set on the firewood for a while.:)

  7. What?? The cats were not hugging in that picture. :):) I am with you about wood cutting I worry for Ted, even though he knows all the rules. He, my son-in-law, & his brother are cutting wood this year for winter. We have many standing dead ash trees in back to cut up. Ted was standing on a ladder and cut a big limb that rolled once it hit the ground, knocked him off the ladder and broke his collar bone. ...so he can not be on ladders unless I can help. Judy we love our men and want them around a long time...but we have to watch them at times. Blessings to you and your husband, xoxo, Susie

  8. So glad things turned out well for your dear hubby and that you made the wise decision to have that wood delivered to you after that accident. All that cutting and splitting. I've watched my husband and son fill do it and it's hard work for sure.
I feel like a broken record but...I wanted to tell my blogging friends that I could be very scarce in my visits as we move and try to navigate satellite internet that could be very sketchy. I'm hoping for the best and that I can keep blogging without too many issues.
    Blessings...

  9. Oh my goodness, Judy, I'm so glad everything went well for your family on that terrible day in the woods. It brings back memories of my husband and I getting wood for our wood stove many years ago. That is some hard work. Getting your own wood heats you several times before it comes inside and I personally am glad we no longer do that! With that said it really was warmer in our home then as opposed to now! ♥

  10. Mr. C is a keeper! Good decision on having the wood delivered. Enjoy your weekend!

  11. That is a lot of wood to cut and split but at least it is already felled and delivered! We don't even have a fireplace anymore so it's been nearly 30 years since we could burn wood! It does smell good and feels cozy!

  12. How wonderful to get all that good hardwood! We've had close calls but nothing quite that bad. My Dad broke his leg one summer in the woods (an hour to drive to the hospital) and hubby still has a knot on his shin from cutting firewood up at my Dad's cabin. It's really a dangerous thing to do but necessary! Won't be long before you need it too! Hugs!

  13. That's a great pile of hardwood for the winter + 3. Glad your husband is okay after his accident in the woods. Hope you won't need the wood too soon.

  14. well that must have been so scary seeeing your husband like that but glad he recovered well and also glad he now has sense to ordeer the logs. Have a great weekend.

  15. Well no wonder you are delighted with the huge truckload of wood. I might be delighted myself after paying the bill to top off the oil tank. 😏 I can not imagine a much more frightening scene than the one you saw that day. So glad that Mr.C recovered. There’ll be enough to do getting the wood ready to help him forget that he didn’t actually fell the trees. Oh God is good...

  16. Smart move to get the wood delivered! My husband cut down over a hundred trees when we built our house and has dropped many trees since then... it can be a dangerous job. We have stacks of wood ready for the winter. I know you are thankful for your husband's recovery! Have a blessed day dear friend, HUGS!

  17. Oh Judy, what a wonderful post. We praise God for sparing your husband. Things do happen so quickly, when my husband and I were planting ann Ash tree out in our front yard...it whipped back and knocked me down.. Thank goodness mine was just a knock down nothing like what happened to your hubby.. I'm so glad your husband ordered the wood this year. Your old cook stove sure brings back memories. My folks had one for years!!!

    Blessings
    Gert

  18. Quite a gift your husband gave you. I understand the concern. My husband loves using the axe to chop his wood, but then our fires are just for atmosphere. I'm just glad sons are included in the wood chop--they can keep an eye out! Amazing the gift of 20/20.

  19. Praise the Lord friend for God's hedge of protection. His timing is perfect and always on time. Oh my mercy I love that stove. I have a regular wood burning fireplace and due to allergies have been thinking about putting in a gas one. I love a wood burning one but oh my mercy, being closed in with it has really taken a toll on me at times. But on the flipside, we never really have enough cold weather to warrant a fire. Hope you have a great day. Hugs and blessings, Cindy
