NATIONAL PIE DAY
National Pie Day is celebrated annually on January 23rd. (Not to be confused with March 14 which is PI π Day.)
National
Pie Day was created simply to celebrate the pie. It is a day for all
to bake or cook their favorite pies. Even more importantly, it is a day
set aside for all to enjoy eating pies!
The first pies appeared around 9500 BC in the Egyptian Neolithic period or New Stone Age.
1. Okay, fess up. Tell us your top three favorite pies, please. Will you have some pie today?
I probably won't have pie today, but I sure do like it! My favorites are lemon meringue, blueberry, and fresh strawberry or mincemeat. Okay, now I'm thinking too much about pie!
This one is a lemon (my favorite!) cake pie. Delicious!
2.
While we are talking about food... are you a picky eater or are you
ready to try almost any new food? What is the worst thing you have ever
eaten?
I'm not a picky eater, but I am definitely not ready to try almost any new food. I used to think that if they invented a people dog food, I would be a regular customer just because I do like to eat the same things, rather than always introducing something new. The worst thing I ever ate was monkey brains soft boiled eggs or warmed up chicken. I ate chicken reheated. I'd rather just eat it cold or not at all. And runny egg yolk? Ewwww! Toast soldiers are for putting peanut butter on, NOT for dipping in nearly raw egg. Shudder! I'm sure there are other things also, but I can't think of them at the moment.
Rainbows on the walls and a little editing on the photo. Daughter's home. I think it can be considered art.
3. Baking could be considered an art as could cooking. How do you define art?
That's an interesting statement. I think that's true, as long as there's personal creativity involved. So I guess making a pie according to the recipe is a technical skill, whereas adjusting here and there and making a crust that is attractive is more an art.
A grandpa buried in balloons
4. Tell us a really stupid joke that made you laugh, please.
The funniest joke ever, which I've told before, is that a newly-married couple were sitting down to dinner, the wife's first attempt at cooking a meal. The husband made a valiant attempt, but couldn't finish his dinner. It was really horrid. So he gave it to the dog. A bit later, the wife noticed the dog in the corner and asked, 'Why is she chewing her butt??' He responded, 'She's trying to get the taste out of her mouth.'
Misty, R.I.P.
Her favorite thing was playing in the alfalfa field.
Her second favorite thing was mentioned in the paragraph above.
Well, not really, but often enough. :-(
5.
January 23rd is also National Handwriting Day. Do you have nice
handwriting? Did cursive writing come naturally or did you practice in
those double-lined practice books until your fingers hurt?
We actually did practice handwriting in grade school. After I learned to type, handwriting was so laborious that I tried to avoid it. Now I'm trying to regain that handwriting skill. It's not good, by any means, but since starting to keep a journal, I'm at least getting daily practice.
6. Tell us something random about your week.
Rivers, Rails, and Roads
A new game we played with the grandkids. Games, puzzles, and books are such great ways to interact with the younger generation. They love it!
Putting the last piece in a Ravensburger puzzle (our favorite). He likes to hide a piece of the puzzle and bring it out at the very end, ensuring that he gets to put in that last piece. :-)
We'll probably be spending most of the time indoors in the next few days, for the temps are going to be well below zero F. I'm so thankful for the wood stove, Mr. C. who supplies the wood and hauls it into the house, and a nearly snowless January to this point. I'm sorry, snow lovers.
Tommy & Smokey, occupying the best chair next to the fire.
"Tommy, could you let me breathe?!"
Yep, the Christmas tree is still up on the front porch, and will remain there until the needles start falling off. It's not going to happen any time soon, according to the forecast.
ONE MORE RANDOM:
In light of the headlines and vitriol spewed all over the internet the past couple days, I thought this was a particularly good article, and words of wisdom. Please take a few minutes to click on the link and read the article.
1 Corinthians 13:4-5: “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs."

Good Morning, Judy. Freezing weather never looked so good as in your beautiful photos. So sorry about Misty. It's so hard to lose a pet. Lemon cake pie??? I wish I had a piece right now!! Have a good week.
ReplyDeleteI love the photo of your daughter's living room. So bright! Great painting.
ReplyDeleteWe love Ravensburger puzzles, and putting in the last piece. I used to hide the last piece so I'd get to put it in, but being a Mom and all ... it's been years since I got to experience that particular feeling of satisfaction.
ReplyDeleteGood morning, I hope you are staying warm there. I love the lemon meringue pie, yum! Happy belated birthday to grandpa. Love the cute family photos and the sweet kitties. I hope everyone is well. Happy Wednesday, enjoy your day!
ReplyDeleteyour favorite pie is my most favorite pie, I love all things lemon. next is pecan pie. oh my. and I have had no pie for 2 years. I miss it.
ReplyDeleteyour daughters home is definitey ART to decorate it like that takes a gift.. if I had your porch and lived where you live, that beautiful tree would be there until winter was over. I may be the worlds most picky eater. I don't eat spices, I once bought a rotisirie chicken by mistake, it was not plain but lemon pepper. I love lemon but I could not eat that chicken. bob love it. I also do not eat re heated chicken. cold only and I eat no eggs that are running. if the white is jiggling or the yellow is runny it will not go in my mouth. daddy and my hubby loved runny egss. uck...

ReplyDeleteI love coconut cream pie:) That's my fave! I love the tree still lit up. I leave my lights on my mantel all year. They add a glow in the mornings while I am sitting with my coffee. I love games and puzzles with the kids and grandkids. We always have game and puzzle time on our family vacation. Have a blessed and beautiful day dear friend, HUGS!
ReplyDeleteComputer problems, Grrrrr . . .
ReplyDeleteI'll trade you a piece of black raspberry pie for a slice of that lemon cake pie...deal?? Oh, and I read that article...VERY good and so much truth. It's easy to hide behind a comment...way too easy. :(
ReplyDeleteHi, I don't follow the Wednesday Medley but wanted to stop over to say hello. Stay warm, I know your are getting hit with some cold weather and snow. Debby
ReplyDeleteI have been having “fits” trying to figure out why my comments won’t go through on my friends blogs
ReplyDeleteSo before I wrote here I gave it a “trial.”
It went through to you on the first try.
Then, when I started to write again, poofff . . . gone.
Just now, closing my iPad for the day . . . what I had started to write, suddenly appeared.
So . . . back with you.
1. Weather . . . -14 Monday morning, very cold for this area in Western Michigan.
It always reminds me of living in Lone Roack, Wisconsin, experiencing -53 below zero.
Eyelashes turning white, stuck to my face.
(No doubt I was teary eyed for that to happen.)
2. I am not much of a Pie person . . .
If my mom was still alive and baking pie, I would be first in line!
My mothers Banana Cream Pie was like no other . . . BEST!
Second, was her Lemon Meriange
Third . . . there are times when a Rhubarb piece of pie, calls my name.
3. I consider myself a picky eater.
Still prefer raw veggies to cooked.
Crunchy and good.
(Runny egg . . . no way!)
4. I have no jokes to add.
I barely remember them when they are being told.
5. My cursive was ok . . . early on I changed to more of a manuscript.
Really do a combination of both. I think years of hospital charting changed my writing style.
6. Random week happening . . .
Took a Clay & Glaze class . . .
Loved the new experience.
7. I grew up playing family board games.
I miss it now . . .
I will check out the Rivers Rails Roads game . . .
I know some grands who will play it with me!
8. Love the look and feel of a wood stove.
Tommy and Smokey look comfy, although Smoky might be choking a bit.
9. Excellent article.
(I promise never, ever to write such a long comment again!)
What a wonderful article you've included. Certainly thought-provoking! I love the quilt on the back of your daughter's couch! 'Had to chuckle at your aversion to runny eggs … since I enjoy them atop pizza. Momma always said ours would be a dull world if everyone liked the same things!
ReplyDeletePS - I'd never heard of a Ravensburger puzzle, but it sure sounds intriguing.
Love all the colors of your daughters living room. It’s been really cold here in the single digits, couple mornings below zero, but nothing compared to how cold it is at your home.
ReplyDeleteYou are one of the few people I've come across that likes mincemeat pie. I love mincemeat pie!! Hope you have a wonderful Wednesday!
ReplyDeleteCoconut cream pie!! Yummy good! Soft boiled eggs!!! Nasty, nasty! I can't even bear to watch someone eat the stuff! It makes me shudder just thinking about it. I love your artwork and all your photos are always so good. So glad for you to have a nice cozy place while the weather outside is so frigid! Keep your fingers warm so you can keep on writing!
ReplyDeleteApply a test of love before making a comment. I love that!! Thanks for the link to the article. Praise God for a voice of reason.
ReplyDeleteThank you for joining the Medley today! I enjoyed your answers and all the comments that followed!! Your daughter's room is gorgeous and her creative decorating is art, indeed!
Hi Judy,
ReplyDeleteAtticus is our puzzle guy. He loves doing them. He did one for Bobby Jean and we glued it together for her and gave it to her as a gift.
Have a great week and stay warm,
Carla
Okay I love first Corinthians - one of my favorite verses in the bible.
ReplyDeleteI like all the pies you do - except for mincemeat - I am kind of a picky eater.
Love your red pillows.
And handwriting - I think eventually it will be gone - the kids don't write much anymore!
Love your two cats too.
Sandie♥
Awwww, Misty. What a beautiful baby she was. Your joke was funny!
ReplyDeleteIt has been nearly snowless here too, but very cold! I would love to have snow! I enjoyed your answers! Happy Wednesday!
https://lorisbusylife.blogspot.com/
Great joke! We are enduring some very cold weather here. Well, cold for us. Indeed, that verse is soooo needed today. I've never seen such hatred in my life, so, so sad!
ReplyDeleteWe love Ravensburger puzzles too!!! They are the only ones my mother buys now!! Soooo hard ad frameable when they are done! That lemon pie looks delish!!! Have a great day!
ReplyDeleteGood post here, and as always, most enjoyable photos. Love your tree out on the porch!
ReplyDeleteThe article you linked us to at the end -- very good. It is shocking to me how thoughtless and unkind people are in their social media comments. Decency has definitely gone by the wayside.
Loved reading your whole blog. I am not a picky eater but do not like liver or kidney. Do not bake but admire the creative techniques others can do. We always played board games in out family. That Lemon Meringue pie looks good, although at present I am NOt eating sweet tings at all and feel much more healthy or it.I am NO good at telling jokes but very good are laughing even at the silliest ones. My handwriting is terrible so I am VERY glad for my laptop when I can type. will look at your link later as I am in the spring cleaning mood and have nearly completed cleaning my whole house. Must get on now but I am sorry to hear about Misty, A beautiful dog
ReplyDeleteWhat a nice family photo ⬇️ I have no idea who they all are, but they look like nice people. I haven’t read the link though I will because the “vitriol” has been particularly odious. That’s a fun, if maddening for others, puzzle ploy. Just because of all you Wednesday Medley bloggers, I was forced from my home to go in search of pie. I found a pocket pie...wild blueberry...and I was glad.
ReplyDeleteExcellent article! Thank you for pointing me to it.
ReplyDeleteJudy, love those sweet family photos AND the joke! I've tried some things just to be polite that I don't want to ever eat again, but a few things I will not eat are black pudding (or anything with blood) and organ meats. We don't have a wood stove, but our cat likes to jump on the chair by the heater the minute he comes in from outdoors.
ReplyDeleteSorry, I cannot agree with the article you linked to. Here's another pastor's view of that situation I hope you'll read.
ReplyDeletehttps://johnpavlovitz.com/2019/01/23/white-americas-need-for-white-heroes/
I think we got even less snow then you did in Dec and Jan. But hang on it is coming! I was kind of missing it...but now that we keep getting dumped on! Lol!
ReplyDeleteI didn't know yesterday was pie day or I would have made a pie! My favorite changes with the seasons so I don't think I have one particular favorite. The only one I have ever made that I didn't like was a Raisin Sour Cream. It didn't turn out right and I have never been brave enough to try it again!
Lovely frozen scenes and wow - that lemon pie!
ReplyDeleteI don't like warmed up chicken either! The worse thing I tried recently were some prunes in a can. I only buy the preserved ones from Russia, but I can't get them anymore. I use them to make a salad dressing. I tasted the substitute to see if it would be a substitute, and I spit them out. I couldn't get it out of my mouth fast enough. Bitter and tasted like metal. 9 dollars tossed into the garbage. I since found an Israeli one that works. The author makes a great point about commenting. xo Su
ReplyDeleteSo great to see your posts! Hope you are staying warm; I sure enjoyed all of your photos.
ReplyDeleteWe had a daylong choir workshop today and are learning to sing in Zulu! It's a fun work called Jubilate Deo, and features Psalm 100 in 7 languages plus Latin. Very challenging!
Wonderful shots - especially the lemon meringue!! I want to know who decides it's National Whatever Day'; greetings card companies, possibly. Very interesting article you linked to, which makes several excellent points. But there seems to be an anger in society, too - not just over the Internet. We see it on the news - in France, in the US - and certainly over here, on the roads and in discussions over Brexit. Whatever happened to disagreeing with someone without loosing your temper and ranting about things that are, quite simply, ridiculous.
