The Good Samaritan, Iceman, and a Darling Baby

If you don't know the story behind this birth announcement, it could be quite puzzling. SO, this cute idea (our daughter-in-law has a ton of cute ideas in the graphics department!) came about because when they were pregnant, they presumably asked their four year old (our grandson) what he thought the baby should be named.  He came up with the perfectly sensible suggestion, "Toolbox!" (His daddy is a carpenter - named Joseph. Isn't that cool?) ANYway, I digress. So hence the toolbox birth announcement. And yes, he was born on February 28 and yes I've already told you about that, but who could resist one more cute picture when given a good excuse??

Oliver does love his baby brother,
but I thought it was smart that his mama and daddy gave him a toolbox too!

NATIONAL GOOD SAMARITAN DAY – March 13

NATIONAL GOOD SAMARITAN DAY

National Good Samaritan Day is observed on March 13th.  This day is also known as Good Samaritan Involvement Day. This is a day for unselfish actions to help those in need and to celebrate kindness.
The term “good Samaritan” comes from the Bible parable where a Samaritan helped a stranger who had been robbed and beaten and left to die by the side of the road.  The Samaritan not only cleaned the man’s wounds and clothed him, but took him to an inn where he paid for the man’s care.
The term is used today to describe those who perform acts of kindness for those in need, especially those who are strangers.
HOW TO OBSERVE
Make an effort to help someone who is struggling or having a problem. Use #GoodSamaritanDay to post on social media.
------------------------------------------------------
I did not shoot UP to get this photo of the huge snowbank at our house. Wisconsin had virtually no snow until February and now has broken records for snowfall amount. Hopefully it will start to melt soon, although then there's the issue of flooding. We're on a hilltop, but lots of people will be in flood range. Please pray for them.
1.  When did someone come to your rescue and can you tell us about it?
I have no idea. God, for sure, and always.
I realize this isn't totally related, but yes it is, and so I happened upon this picture, 'Agony in the Garden,' 1898 Frans Schwartz. Two things: It really shows the humanity of Jesus and the fear he faced as he knew what was soon going to happen (the crucifixion and all the torture and suffering leading up to it).  Another thing: It reminds me of my cousin David (it even looks like David) who spent all the years of his life suffering, from the time he served in Viet Nam until he died at a fairly young age. He came to know Jesus in the year or two before he died and is now with his Lord. And that reminds me that we never know the suffering that people are going through. So much is hidden, internal, and the surface that we see can be alcoholism, drug abuse, despair, or cynicism or indifference. Understanding, kindness, and prayer are needed in this world, rather than judgement, harshness, and self-righteous condemnation.
2.  When did you help someone out of a jam and can you tell us about it?
I have no idea and I cannot tell you about it. But I do pray for many people daily, so maybe...
Another beautiful morning as viewed from our front porch
There is a deck on the house in Wausau that has beautiful views also. Not like this, but still so much more than we had hoped or deserve.
3.  What are your thoughts on being a good Samaritan?  Some states (like Florida) have even passed Good Samaritan laws so you don't get into trouble with the law for trying to help someone.
It's quite incredible that a state has to pass laws so that you DON'T get in trouble for being a Good Samaritan. Good grief!
4.  Thursday is National Pi Day.  It's a fun play on the date 3.14.  Will you have some pie to celebrate?
If I could have a piece of my mom's lemon meringue (after scraping off the meringue), I would definitely eat it on Thursday. But because she is no longer with us and no other pie tempts me as much, I most likely will not be eating pie. I love any berry pie and lemon meringue, pecan, mincemeat, and apple. I really do try to avoid pie. I love it going down, but I get a headache afterwards from all the sugar.
The beginnings of my lemon meringue pie, just like Mom's
You'll have to take my word for it.
5.  Did you know that Pi is the most studied number in mathematics?  Are you good with numbers?
I'm pretty good with numbers as in remembering sequences of numbers. Other than that, even thought I'm fairly good at figuring out math problems, Mr. C. has them all figured out in his head in a matter of seconds, which is utterly annoying.
But he's a wonderful grandpa. And yes, I should be, and am, grateful that he can whip up those math answers in barely an instant.
Photo taken a couple years ago. We'll get to see those kids too, in April! Can't wait!
6.  Tell us something random about your week.
As you read this, we will be moving our daughter and kids out of an apartment and into the house that we will all be sharing come the end of the summer. They will move in first and be much closer to the school the kids attend (as in less than a half mile) and we will be doing updates, repairs, etc. to this farmhouse and downsizing. Once I get going on it, I can really make progress. The issue is mostly getting started. I think I can, I think I can, I think I can...
I dropped off posters for Tommy and Smokey at the two local vets' offices on Monday and they were enthusiastic about helping find a wonderful home for the two of them.

I would happily email you the .jpg file if you want to help get the word out on your Facebook page or Instagram. Of course people in Wisconsin or Minnesota would be the most likely to be interested. But who could resist such cute and sweet kitties, right???!!!

  1. My heart is still hurting to know you have to part with your two sweet kitties. Just so sad. Congrats on moving forward with your life and getting "the kids" moved out of a rental and into the new place.
I hope you have a wonderful Wednesday- xo Diana

  2. Loved your answer to #1. I know you must be excited about this upcoming move and also dreading the process. I so wish I could take your kitties, but I am allergic and we just travel too much for pets. Besides, I might have to also deal with a divorce. Not good. But, I so hope that just right family comes along who will love them as they are accustomed to being loved.

  3. I said on another blog in answer to the PI number, that I had no idea PI was a number until I read this, and have no idea about the 3.14 play on date. still don't. I am with Nana on sadness of adopting out your babies... prayers for someone to take both, I hope you don't let someone split them up.. good luck with the move, both the moves and your start over lives.. prayers for a smooth transition...

  4. I love the baby in the toolbox. LOL Judy, your prayers have helped us. Ted and I helped a lady pushing a walker loaded with some tote bags...she hit a bump and spilled some of the stuff into the parking lot. I don't think she was using the walker, but taking it in the hospital for someone. She was so thankful ,saying her friend would have been upset if she had lost any of her things. :) Good to see the kitty cats again. Blessings to you, xoxo, Susie
p.s. I would help shovel snow...but that looks like more than I can dream of tackling.

  5. Hmm, Toolbox...perfectly normal name, why not?? What a sweet idea to give Oliver his own toolbox.

  6. I love the little toolbox baby and that Momma and Daddy gave big brother a toolbox. So precious. You're right. There shouldn't have to be a law for being a good Samaritan. Looks like you have a very fun and loving family. I hope you find homes for those cats!

  7. The problem with being a good Samaritan is that sometimes we misinterpret if someone really needs our help. Helping shouldn't be all about controlling other people's lives :)

    ReplyDelete
  8. Um, I think helping is simply that. Helping. It has nothing to do with controlling other people's lives. I'm sorry if you've had that experience. That would be called controlling other people's lives, not being a good Samaritan.

  9. Congrats on the new grandchild, what a cute photo. Oliver is a cutie too. I can not imagine someone getting into trouble for being a good Samaritan, that law should be nationwide. I hope your kitties find a lovely home. Wishing your a smooth move. Enjoy your day!

  10. My husband also is a whiz at math in his head. Where's my paper and pencil? I do better at that than even a calculator. We had a joke about that in the hospital. The younger nurses did drug dose computations on calculators and the older nurses need pencil and paper. I hope the move is going well today. Oh and the toolbox is so creative and cute! And I'm glad to know this is good Samaritan day. I'll have to text my son as he stopped and helped a woman who had driven off the road and stayed with her until help cam. No one else did. He's a helper like that.

  11. That new baby in a tool box is awfully precious. Getting ready for a move is always a big job. Best of luck!

  12. Your son-in-law is playing the part of a deranged murderer rather convincingly. 😉A neighborhood, eh? Well, John got used to it when he really preferred being well off the road and out in the country.

Sweet photo of Grandpa and his grand...the family resemblance is strong.

Now that’s the cutest Toolbox ever! And a darling big brother, too.

I expect any day that Tommy and Smokey will be relocated to their new home. They’ll be fine together and you will be fine, too. You’ve got a lot to accomplish in the weeks ahead.

  13. Well, I was just fine until I got to the part where the kitties are not going with you. Now, I'm just sad. But that birth announcement is adorable as are the little ones.

  14. Oh my goodness so many beautiful photos. The baby is beautiful and I think the toolbox is such a great idea for his brother.
It is hard to be a good Samaritan at times - isn't it - you never no what to do.
I heard that about the snow and the records too - hope it melts okay.
I love the picture of the angel with Jesus.
Perfect your hubs is great in math.
I know it must break your heart about your dear cats. I would take them if I could.
    Love, sandie

  15. Congrats on the adorable new grandchild! His brother is very cute, too. Didn't you say you're moving to Wausau? We spent the night there once en route to Chicago from MPLS and experienced our first real live tornado alert! That was definitely interesting. Sounds like you're going to have a very busy spring. Hope that snow leaves soon; that sure is an impressive amount!

  16. It truly is sad that you have to pass laws to protect people that help you, but I have taken CPR before and I know that is one thing people are not too willing to help because of so many people that file lawsuits against people that save their life.
What a beautiful view you posted!
That is nice the vet office can help you find a good home for the kitties. They truly are so cute! Loved your answers! Happy Wednesday!

  17. Judy, you have a lot going on. I'm sure you will find good neighbors in your new home. I'll keep you in my prayers as you prepare for such a large move.
Your grandson in the toolbox is darling and so creative. Oliver is a proud little one with his toolbox. Very good idea of his parents to make one for him.
I imagine Tommy and Smokey will find new parents soon. Take care.

  18. Thanks for joining the Medley, Judy, even with everything you have going on!! I sure hope the cats find a loving home. Makes me sad that you have to give them up. I don't envy you the downsizing and packing and updating, etc., but it will all be good in the end. Do keep us posted as you move along in the process!! Prayers being lifted!

  19. I took part in medley and love your answer and it interesting what one does share. But I have to admit the little guy in tool box is a heart steelier.

  20. What a brilliant idea for a carpenter to put his baby in a toolbox. Fabulous image

  21. That baby is adorable and so is his older brother. Just precious. I just adore the toolbox idea for a picture. Enjoyed reading your answers this morning. I do hope your kitties get great homes. Hugs and blessings, Cindy

  22. Judy, I keep putting the word out on Twitter about Tommy and Smokey!

  23. Congratulations on the birth of "Toolbox" - such a creative announcement! I hope the downsizing and sorting go well!

  24. What a darling little boy! So bright eyed-congratulations! And that photo of the sunlight hitting the snow through the trees is gorgeous! Hope you're doing well and spring springs one of these days soon : )

  25. It seems like forever since I have been connected with you.
And I have missed you . . . forgive me please.
Posting, blogging, commenting “jinx problems” which I have still not figured out,
and no one else seems to be able to solve the problems either . . .
plus not feeling well, surgery and who wants to write about and unload all of that.
Suffice it to say . . . out of commission . . . but back and now I am reading about my loves
Smokey & Tommy needing to find a new home. I actually felt some mist in the eyes . . .
Those two charmers “light up my life!” And they “light up” other lives too . . .
So it sounds like big changes in your life Judy . . .
Now I need to go back and read back posts and find out about “Judy and Life!”

I think the “new little” . . . May always be . . . TOOLBOX! How cute and sweet!
(Let’s see if this comment goes through!” Fingers crossed.)

  26. Toolbox--now there's a name. It sure made for a cute announcement. And I love the older brother's eyes! Such a sweetie.

I would love to have a piece of Grammy's lemon meringue pie...like you, the meringue would be wiped off. (Roger's grandmother...called Grammy by ALL who knew her.

  27. What a darling way to announce the new little one! Sooo precious! And what a joy that you will be closer to the rest of your grandchildren, but I am still mourning with you the loss of Tommy and Smokey! I have enjoyed seeing their antics on your blog and IG! It must be breaking your heart too, but I pray that the new home you find for them will ease the transition and loss. I am not a math person at all, English comes much easier to me. I hope spring comes soon and slowly to all of you in Wisconsin, and not like in Nebraska. We are having extremely warm temps here this week and have warnings here too for flooding. We should be okay, we are on top of the mountain, but I fear for others below, and for basements which will most likely have flooding. Like you, we got most of our snow in February, it was a crazy winter! Looking forward to late spring here :) Blessings!

  28. Judy, how is the move going? Did you find a new mom for Tommy and Smokey?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Isn't it funny the names kids come up with! Toolbox is funny.
We had lots of snow in February too. I'm thinking Spring might actually be here now.
