The Travel Diary of Samuel Peeps Day Five

Overcast and cool, it was lovely polar fleece vest weather. We had a leisurely morning, then went to some huge mall (well, not Mall-of-America huge) that actually has numbered 'neighborhoods,' and a computerized voice that speaks to you when you walk through the doors, telling you which neighborhood you're in - in case you didn't notice the monstrous neighborhood sign. Got to see what Texans like to spend their money on.

The buildings here, rather than being tall and squished into a small space, are low to the ground and spread out. Even highway cloverleaves (?) are huge, taking up lots of acreage. It's Texas. I guess they've got the space to do that.

Went to see the movie,
Shutter Island, with Leonardo DiCaprio. He's an amazing actor! Three hours of nail-biting suspense! Definitely worth watching, maybe even renting to watch it again, but not one I'd buy until it hits the $5.99 bin at WalMart. Not that it wasn't a great movie, it's just that there's a limit to how much I'm willing to pay to put myself through that kind of stress. And no, it doesn't matter if I've seen it before and know how every scene is going to turn out. It's still stressful! Just ask Dänika. She can relate to that.

Had dinner at Outback, one of the few restaurants that have a gluten-free menu, then back to the 'holiday cottage' for the evening. Watched the others eating popcorn and read from Blandings Castle, the Wodehouse book I picked up yesterday. Wouldn't it have been fun to have that man for a neighbor!! Everything he writes is just a riot! Almost every page elicits a giggle or two, if not an outright guffaw!

Today when leaving the house, a squirrel was at the base of the tree just outside the door. He didn't even bother to scamper away when I came out. They must be pretty tame in the neighborhood, or maybe it's just that I'm used to the squirrels at home who are kept in a constant state of terror by Bridger and Misty.

A couple more pics, one of the dead palm fronds set out for the garbage man to pick up. You don't find many palm fronds out beside the road in NW Wisconsin!

Hope everyone's well.

The neighborhood

  1. I enjoyed today's post as always. Kevin could definitely work for a popcorn company appearing in their commercials to buy popcorn. He looks so intent on what he doing. You are right about the palm fronds...we will never see them at the curb in the Midwest. :) The neighborhood looks very nice like it is an upscale place to live. I do hope by the time you get home spring is sliding into early summer. (even though this weekend it is supposed to get colder again) Enjoy your evening my friend.
