I'm not sure what it is I like about this wagon. It was about 1 PM so it was in bright light and hard to get a decent photo. Maybe I'm starting to like rust, like Sandra does. :-) I was going to say that rust is really growing on me, but that might be too close to the truth for comfort.
By train
My cousin is visiting from Montana. We don't get to see her very often, and it's a special treat that I get to spend time with her this week. The map above shows, roughly, the route from her house to ours, in Wisconsin. It is 1048 miles, taking about 17 hours by car and approximately 20 hours by train. I have taken exactly one train trip ever, and that was from Minneapolis to Great Falls, MT. The train is far more comfortable than a plane (unless one is traveling first class, I suppose), but you also have the opportunity to look out the window and see the amazing scenery of the United States. Well, that is, unless you're traveling across the upper Plains, in which case it's mostly flat land with an occasional elk. So it's not particularly great for sight-seeing, but it's incredible for raising crops! And actually, the beauty of the vast cropland near harvest time is an awesome thing.
We have friends in England who took a train(s) tour of the United States. Like all of us, prior to traveling it, they had no idea of he enormity of this country. For some of you who may not be aware of this fact, England (not to be confused with the UK) would fit inside Wisconsin.
I look at that map and wonder what's the greatest distance any of my blogging friends have traveled by train.
How about you?

Wishing you and your cousin a great time. I have never visited your part of the country and the only train ride I've been on was in Germany about 30 years ago!!!
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful day!
that wagon is awesome! I would've shot a few pics of it too!
ReplyDeleteHave a great time! I didn't know England was that small, but never thought about it. The wagon would have gotten my attention too.
ReplyDeletei love rust, i love old wood, i love old wheels, and i love your pic of all of the above. the bright sun brings out the details.
ReplyDeletei also love trains and spent the first 18 years of my life riding 400 miles from Savannah to Palmetto FL several times a year. i would so love to tour the western states by train. and i will bring my kindle for when there is no scenery

I've ridden trains all over Europe, but as you say geography is a relative thing. I have always wanted to take the Vancouver- Banff train...the scenery looks stunning.
ReplyDeleteI have taken a train, but not as long as this. I used to think of years ago - the pioneer women and how rough the wagon must have been. Have a great time with your cousin!
ReplyDeleteWhen I go to Europe I always take the train and DH and I love it. I was going to take a train ride to CO from OMaha but it takes 15 hours and it was delayed 9 hours. Good Luck and keep us posted. Best way to see the country.
ReplyDeleteWell, I am down in Utah and it is probably as far as Montana but maybe a little bit more.
ReplyDeleteOh, I'd love to get together with cousins. As far as a train trip, I have also taken one, from Salt Lake City to San Francisco. We chose this city because its so public transit friendly. Loved the train trip .... slow and comfy, you are so right!
ReplyDeleteAs a little girl I rode a train with my aunt and cousin but it was only a distance which could be covered in about 3 hours by car. And when our kids were in their teens we took the train from here in Oklahoma to Fort Worth, Texas. Again, only a 3 hour drive but much of the day by train. We really enjoyed it. My husband and I keep talking about taking a long train trip someday - perhaps through Canada. I'd also love to take one of those long riverboat cruises down the Mississippi. There's something about taking things slower and enjoying the trip. Enjoy your time with your cousin!
ReplyDeleteThe only time I ever traveled on a train was when we got on the Green Mountain Railroad and traveled up to Vermont to get my little brother, who was adopted from there. Trains are so much fun! :)
ReplyDeleteHope you guys have a great time!

I love train trips! I keep thinking about taking the train to visit my cousins in Texas, but it does take a long time and it is that much less time to visit! We usually take the train about once a year into Chicago, about two and a half hours. We love to see all the cute stations along the way and the cute sailors when it stops at the Naval Base!
ReplyDeleteI have driven to Texas in a car. It takes about 20 hours. Talk about diverse scenery!! You get the rolling hills and rivers of the midwest, the flat land of Kansas and Oklahoma and the desert/dry land/oil fields of New Mexico and Texas! As long as I have my knitting I am good!
Praying you have a nice time my friend.
ReplyDeleteHave a good time with Bobby. I have a feeling I will not even get to see her :(
ReplyDeletePlease tell her we love her. The boys are busy talking about all her great stories.
Prayers sent from us for your time together.
Oh how lovely to have visitors, especially those you don't see often.
ReplyDeleteI've travelled across New Zealand by train, the North Island? I always get them mixed up now. The top one.
And many times I've taken the train from Vancouver, to Alberta. It's lovely.

I took the train to Chicago a few times...it was so much fun....loved it!
ReplyDeleteHope you and your cousin have a fun time together! When I was 17, I traveled by train from Milwaukee to L.A. for a GS encampment, and when our kids were small we went by train from Seattle to Pittsburgh. It was kind of like backpacking on wheels. We've also ridden the train in Europe and England.
ReplyDeleteLoved the wagon rust and all!! I hope you have a wonderful visit!! I haven't traveled by train in the US only in Korea. But I did suffer a bus ride from New Mexico to New Jersey buts that another story.
ReplyDeleteI love riding the train! Even aside from my phobia of flying, and my dislike of driving (and dealing with construction, traffic, paying for gas, etc.), the train is so much fun. It's comfortable, you can bring whatever you like without being searched (which should probably worry me more than it does!), and you can watch scenery, see little towns bustling along, and watch a grand adventure right outside your window ....
