Rock of Ages

 September sunset

Our Bible study group is getting together for a hymn sing. I can't wait. And one of the hymns I'll suggest is this one - Rock of Ages. Such an old hymn, and such a great message!

Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee;
Let the water and the blood,
From Thy wounded side which flowed,
Be of sin the double cure;
Save from wrath and make me pure.

Not the labor of my hands
Can fulfill Thy law’s demands;
Could my zeal no respite know,
Could my tears forever flow,
All for sin could not atone;
Thou must save, and Thou alone.

Nothing in my hand I bring,
Simply to the Cross I cling;
Naked, come to Thee for dress;
Helpless look to Thee for grace;
Foul, I to the fountain fly;
Wash me, Savior, or I die.

While I draw this fleeting breath,
When mine eyes shall close in death,
When I soar to worlds unknown,
See Thee on Thy judgment throne,
Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee.

Do you have a favorite hymn?

  1. During my high school and college years, I served as pianist at church and for the children's choirs. I love the old hymns and the stories of how they were written. A favorite of mine is "What A Friend We Have In Jesus."

  5. It is so hard to pick a favorite! One of my very favorite songs is "Of the Father's Love Begotten". It is usually classes as a Christmas song, but I love to sing it all year round. It is sung to a 16th century(I think) plainsong or chant, so beautiful! And a great reminder of the greatness of God.

  10. FUN! I was raised in a southern baptist church and one my favorite events from my childhood was the hymn sings. While I love so many of the old hymns, In the Garden was always my favorite. I just love the chorus.."And He walks with me and He talks with me and He tells me that I am His own." Yeah....I love that. :)
