H2SO4

Good to the last drop!

'Johnny was a chemist's son,
But Johnny is no more
'Cause what he thought was H2O
Was H2SO4.'

Some years ago, Kevin brought home this great old [empty] sulfuric acid bottle with its bright blue plastic stopper. I've always liked it, and always think of that poem when I see it.

I also think of how much better things would look around here if I'd dust more often. (Were you aware of the fact that 'dust' is also a verb?  Depressing, isn't it!)

I remember that as a kid one of my jobs was dusting the furniture. We always had chores on Saturday mornings and then usually had Saturday afternoons off, if we got all our chores done (I think they call that child abuse these days). Anyway, I had to really get all the dust off - like even the rungs of chairs and shelves.

These days, I take note of how tall our expected guests are before I dust. I mean, really, if they're all shorter than 5'8", what's the point of dusting the highest library shelves that are not going to be seen anyway?? Okay, that's a bit tongue-in-cheek. But I count on friends coming to see us, not to inspect our house.

Burning wood to heat the house, we seem to have more than our fair share of dust. Right now, I'm letting it accumulate a while to prove that it's not controlling me.

Besides, I need to spend time online learning about Etsy Circles and Etsy Treasuries. There's always something, isn't there!

So what are you up to today? Any dusting on the agenda? I seriously hope you have something more interesting going on.

  1. I'm not dusting - but have to sit in a hairdresser's chair for 2 1/2 hours - it's color time :(

  3. Where does all of the dust come from? I dust and a short time later it's back. Dusting has to be the worst job.
Hey, I just remembered the grandkids are coming over this afternoon, I'll have them dust.

  5. I never dust, I have a theory that it gets to a certain level then doesn't get any thicker. It's a scientific experiment I'm carrying out.

Also, I don't want my friends to feel intimidated by my super clean house so I try to be at least a bit messy for their sakes. :)

  6. Dusting was also my job as a kid and it had to be thorough - everything removed from each surface. And believe me, when your mom is a "collector" that's a big job. It's my least favorite chore. My current excuse for not doing much dusting is that I'm allergic to dust (that part is true) and I'm trying to avoid an asthma attack. Sounds legit, right?

  8. I hear you on the dusting. It is my least favorite thing to do in housekeeping chores. Despise it. After years and years of doing it all ourselves, we finally decided to cut ourselves some slack and hire a maid service a couple of weeks ago. I now know what heaven is like!

  11. I'm one of the few people who never minded housework, even as a child. However, I now have an allergy to dust of all things so have to rely on my husband (yeah, right) or wear a mask. See-- all those years of dusting caught up to me! Beware! Ha, ha...

  12. It was my job to dust as a kid too. Today I am trying to make myself brave the snow and just drive to my water aerobics. We got 11 inches yesterday and already have 2 more inches and it's coming down in a steady fall still.

  13. I don't dust. I decided something had to go and it couldn't be blogging, right? :)

  14. Very cute, now I know that your beautiful soap would not have dust on it...

I dislike dusting, and it makes my allergies worse...so I use the built in vac to suck it all up...

Had a few incidents where non dust items ventured into the hose...that's exciting.

  17. I love to dust! So I wonder why I don't actually DO it very often?

    Very cool bottle, though.

  18. My job was always dusting too....and I hated it. For a girl with allergies, it was the worst possible job for me. Being the only child at home, I had no choice. Now that I'm an adult, I have a dusty house until the dust in the house is worse than the dusting and I tackle it. :)

  19. Dusting? We're supposed to dust? ;)

When I visit a friend, the last thing I notice is dust. I expect the same respect when my friends visit me!

I had chores, too. I was the oldest of four kids, and dad and mom both worked full time. I did a little more than dusting...

  21. Well, my dad wasn't a chemist, but my grandfather was! I'm certainly glad my dad didn't take after poor Johnny - heh. I've never heard that poem before - very catchy! And that bottle is very cool.

Dusting - from all the comments, looks like you hit a nerve there, LOL.
"Right now, I'm letting it accumulate a while to prove that it's not controlling me."
You sound like my kinda gal *G* I've been proving for years that my dust doesn't control me at all! Ha. You should see the amazing 'faux fur' ceiling fan cover I get sometimes ;-)

  22. Dusting is a Sisyphean task ... but then, so is vacuuming, laundry, dishwashing ... groan. It never ends - there's always some sort of cleaning that needs to be done. But who wants to dust when they could be reading, cooking, playing with the grandkids, making snowmen, having coffee with friends, or even just staring at the floor??? I may notice if others haven't dusted or vacuumed; but then I just know that they're kindred spirits who realize there are more important things, like friendship ....

Good for you on studying Etsy. You will have to share with me what you learn. :)
