This is the type of souvenir I bring home. I found this tiny ceramic Tey Pottery village (it's about 9 inches long) in a little thrift shop in Thirsk, North Yorkshire, across the street from the butcher shop. I liked it instantly, because it represented an English village, and because it had a heavy, smooth glaze, with no nicks or scratches. And, because it was only a couple £ - which I thought was a good price for something I liked.

Oh, your souvenirs are so charming! Quaint and unique, utterly reminiscent of where they came from. I inevitably bring home food-related souvenirs - I know, you'll have to pick yourself up off the floor after collapsing from that shock! Local cookbooks, a refrigerator magnet of Roy Lichtenstein's hot dog painting, a bookmark of Thibault's cakes ... but they also have memories attached, because I toured the museums with friends whom I remember when I look at the souvenir, or I remember a family trip to Alaska when I make a recipe from the cookbook, etc.

I used to pick up the somewhat cheesy old state souviner plates at garage sales etc. I first startted collecting states where I had been then branched out to fill a front porch wall. A few years ago, I painted the porch so scaled back the plates. They are kinda fun to see in a grouping. And, yes, I read about the 2.2 mil bowl! Doubt an old plate from Florida will ever be worth that! :)

ReplyDeleteHow I wish I had gone to some thrift stores while visiting these countries.
In December I will be spending three days in Basel, Switzerland before I go on a river cruise down the Rhine to visit Christmas markets. I am going to put finding a thrift stores on my list of things to do.
That is a cute little piece of pottery. You might want to check it out in case you have a fortune. :) And, yes, I saw the new Matthew. Don't like. Don't like it at all.
ReplyDeleteThat is a great little souvenir! You really should look it up, though! That $3 bowl, worth $2.2 million made for quite a story this week! We should all be so lucky! I take photos, and spend money on enjoying wherever we are. In Italy, it was the food and wine! I do pick up Cat's Meow pieces occasionally, but that 'craze' has gone the way of Beanie Babies, I think. You did the right thing...buy something because you like it!!

ReplyDeleteWhat sweet souvenirs! I don't buy anything special when I travel. Here in Florida I usually come home with seashells I've picked up on the beach. It would be fun to go in thrift stores in other towns though. I haven't seen anything about Dan S. ! Interesting!

No, I have not seen anything about a new role for the ex-"Matthew Crawley", but figured that one of the reasons he did not renew his contract was because he had some other offers. I do love Dan Stevens and wish him the best in his career, even if he has stepped away from Downton.

I love souvenirs like that... cute, out of the norm, and reasonably priced!! And it's truly about the memories it sparks for us, right? My souvenirs are usually pictures - pictures to me are worth so much more than any nicknack I can find.

Oh, dear. The poor headless fellow. Perhaps you can repair him. As for souvenirs, I have a few pieces of pottery, a plate or bowl,that were carefully carried home. Silver rings also remind me of travels to Mexico, Morocco, and Ireland. They are also easier to pack!

That's such a sweet souviner, Judy. Oh, but your poor soldier. I hope you're able to fix him somehow. My favorite souviners are things I'll use in my kitchen or things I can wear. And as much as I like taking photos, I tend to buy a lot of post cards since they're much better views than I could ever photograph, and it means I don't have to lug my camera around with me everywhere.

I used to collect mugs but as you know from a previous post I did, I collect fridge magnets (thanks for yours). However my fridge is full ... & the less authentic ones have to be relegated as only the best of new arrivals can be purchased. Activity seems to have gone quiet for a while due to revisiting lots of places and sometimes not by choice.
