Souvenirs of Britain - Anglophile Friday

This is the type of souvenir I bring home. I found this tiny ceramic Tey Pottery village (it's about 9 inches long) in a little thrift shop in Thirsk, North Yorkshire, across the street from the butcher shop. I liked it instantly, because it represented an English village, and because it had a heavy, smooth glaze, with no nicks or scratches. And, because it was only a couple £ - which I thought was a good price for something I liked.

Look at that cute little Norman church!

I forgot to mention that it has green felt on the bottom.

and the thatched-roofed cottage

The little Tey Pottery village isn't the only Tey Pottery out there, I've discovered. They've made several other pottery buildings, their 'Britain in Minature' series. Some of it is very rare. I don't know about this piece. But it doesn't matter. I bought it because I liked it. I suppose I should check it out just in case it's worth 2.2 million dollars or something, like that Chinese bowl bought for $3 at a garage sale!

From TeyPottery.blogspot.com: "Tey Pottery was originally started by Carol Maxted-Massey at Marks Tey , Colchester . The pottery was later made at three locations , Hainford, Lenwade and Banham , all in Norfolk ."

And if you want to start your own collection of Tey Pottery, check out Ebay.

Not Tey Pottery, but...
he was one of my favorite souvenirs, and used to stand on my desk.
Now he reclines. He can't seem to keep his head about him.

But most of my souvenirs are the photos I take.

So what kind of souvenirs do you like to bring home, and do you shop the thrift stores to find them?

  1. Oh, your souvenirs are so charming! Quaint and unique, utterly reminiscent of where they came from. I inevitably bring home food-related souvenirs - I know, you'll have to pick yourself up off the floor after collapsing from that shock! Local cookbooks, a refrigerator magnet of Roy Lichtenstein's hot dog painting, a bookmark of Thibault's cakes ... but they also have memories attached, because I toured the museums with friends whom I remember when I look at the souvenir, or I remember a family trip to Alaska when I make a recipe from the cookbook, etc.

  2. Very nice! I used to pick up the somewhat cheesy old state souviner plates at garage sales etc. I first startted collecting states where I had been then branched out to fill a front porch wall. A few years ago, I painted the porch so scaled back the plates. They are kinda fun to see in a grouping. And, yes, I read about the 2.2 mil bowl! Doubt an old plate from Florida will ever be worth that! :)

  3. In Ireland I purchased Mosse pottery, in Poland I bought Polish pottery, and of course amber jewelry.

How I wish I had gone to some thrift stores while visiting these countries.

In December I will be spending three days in Basel, Switzerland before I go on a river cruise down the Rhine to visit Christmas markets. I am going to put finding a thrift stores on my list of things to do.

  4. That is a cute little piece of pottery. You might want to check it out in case you have a fortune. :) And, yes, I saw the new Matthew. Don't like. Don't like it at all.

  5. That is a great little souvenir! You really should look it up, though! That $3 bowl, worth $2.2 million made for quite a story this week! We should all be so lucky! I take photos, and spend money on enjoying wherever we are. In Italy, it was the food and wine! I do pick up Cat's Meow pieces occasionally, but that 'craze' has gone the way of Beanie Babies, I think. You did the right thing...buy something because you like it!!

  7. What nice keepsakes! That's a good idea, to go to thrift stores when you are traveling.

  8. What sweet souvenirs! I don't buy anything special when I travel. Here in Florida I usually come home with seashells I've picked up on the beach. It would be fun to go in thrift stores in other towns though. I haven't seen anything about Dan S. ! Interesting!

  15. Don't we all like to find that elusive Chinese bowl? You will think I am crazy, but I love the reclining Scotsman with his head to his side :>)

  16. What a sweet little village figurine. No, I have not seen anything about a new role for the ex-"Matthew Crawley", but figured that one of the reasons he did not renew his contract was because he had some other offers. I do love Dan Stevens and wish him the best in his career, even if he has stepped away from Downton.

  18. I will have to check out Matthew's new look....his character would look quite villainous if he came back...like the walking dead but that is a different show.

  20. Of course you had to bring that home! It's absolutely charming. What do I bring home - usually a piece of china or some sort of little antique that I wouldn't find anywhere else. I'm hoping Don brings me something from Prague -

Thanks so much for joining in this week!

  21. I love souvenirs like that... cute, out of the norm, and reasonably priced!! And it's truly about the memories it sparks for us, right? My souvenirs are usually pictures - pictures to me are worth so much more than any nicknack I can find.

  23. Love your little village scene, so charming!

I like to find things that are from the area if possible. If not, something sweet that will evoke the memories of the trip.

    Happy weekend!

  26. I love this piece. I studied pottery in college and learned how difficult it is to have items turn out right. Your purchase was good one. :-)

  27. What a cute little village. Seems like a pretty good buy to me. How could Mathew possibly be a villain?

  31. Oh, dear. The poor headless fellow. Perhaps you can repair him. As for souvenirs, I have a few pieces of pottery, a plate or bowl, that were carefully carried home. Silver rings also remind me of travels to Mexico, Morocco, and Ireland. They are also easier to pack!

Thank you so much for visiting my blog today. I love the name of yours, so fresh!

  32. That's such a sweet souviner, Judy. Oh, but your poor soldier. I hope you're able to fix him somehow. My favorite souviners are things I'll use in my kitchen or things I can wear. And as much as I like taking photos, I tend to buy a lot of post cards since they're much better views than I could ever photograph, and it means I don't have to lug my camera around with me everywhere.

  34. Great shots. I never realised that these souvenirs had so much detail.

It must be the English woman in you that has it in for the Scots !

I used to collect mugs but as you know from a previous post I did, I collect fridge magnets (thanks for yours). However my fridge is full ... & the less authentic ones have to be relegated as only the best of new arrivals can be purchased. Activity seems to have gone quiet for a while due to revisiting lots of places and sometimes not by choice.
