Public rights of way from gov.uk

"Public rights of way are open to everyone. They can be roads, paths or tracks, and can run through towns, countryside or private property.

"You have the right to walk along them. Some rights of way are also open to horse riders, cyclists or motorists:

• footpaths - let you go by foot only
• bridleways - let you go by foot, horse or bike
• restricted byways - let you travel by any form of transport that doesn’t have a motor
• byways open to all traffic - let you travel by any form of transport, including cars (though they’re mainly used by walkers and horse riders)"

Lovely Reeth - in the Yorkshire Dales. Even the pigs take little notice of the tourists who decide to walk from the lower level of the town (above) along the public footpath to the upper level. Look what a beautiful environment those pigs are in, yet they seem oblivious to those incredible drystone walls and the grand hills surrounding the village. Snort. Oink. Zzzzz.

"The people who own or maintain the land must keep public rights of way open and useable. 

If you have a problem using a right of way - eg an obstruction, poor maintenance or a misleading sign – you should report it to:

• the National Park Authority if it’s in a national park
• the local highway authority – you can contact them through your local council
• the Forestry Commission in woodland"

Aha! an obstruction! But I think we can forgive this one and not report it to the authorities.

 What?! This is a public footpath sign?

Some public footpath signs are hardly distinguishable from any other old post, especially if you don't know exactly what you're supposed to be looking for, or if they're obscured by flowering shrubs. When my daughter and I were in Bourton-on-the-Water, we decided to take the public footpath toward Little Rissington and lost track of the sign posts, eventually ending up in a pasture with a friendly? bull. That was our first real clue that we must be off the posted track. Fortunately, neither the bull nor we were irreparably offended.

Vintage Immigration

 Nels Petersen, Maude Timblin

1909 - Wedding Photo

Eight years prior to their wedding, my grandpa had arrived in the U.S. as an immigrant from Denmark, with $6 in his pocket. By the time of this photo, he was working in Wyoming, where my grandma, whose family had moved there temporarily because of health reasons (at least that's my understanding) was living. My grandma was working as a waitress in a restaurant, where she met my grandpa who worked with the railroad.

Nels Petersen left Liverpool, England on January 12, 1901, arriving at New York January 19th, 1901 - on the Campania of the Cunard Line. Somehow he had made his way to England from Denmark. I don't suppose that leg of the journey would have been too difficult, since they're not that far apart.

Nels, 19 years old, was on his way to Hinckley, Illinois to stay with his sister and brother-in-law. I believe that immigrants had to have a sponsor, and they would have provided that sponsorship. Even in 1901, $6 wouldn't have taken my grandpa very far if he hadn't already had a job lined up.

Nels was my mother's father. My paternal grandfather was from Sweden, but that's another story.

The Grandpuppy

I hope to get Jasmine in for her heartworm test, Lyme vaccination, flea and tick preventative, and heartworm preventative. She's a pretty easy dog, so this shouldn't be too traumatic.

When she first arrived, she ran throughout the house looking for Bridger. The established routine is that when she would arrive, she would run up to him and he would pin her to the ground. That re-established the pecking order and everything went swimmingly from there. I think she's kinda lost without him - but she is enjoying his bed.

Wood Tick Season

Before they arrived to spend the Memorial Day weekend with us, our oldest son sent this photo he'd just taken of his boys. I asked him why he insists upon making our darling, beautiful grandsons look like convicts. He said, 'No, not convicts...recruits.'  Yeah, well...  At least they're happy convicts.

I guess it has to do with wood ticks. Since the boys will be spending time with us the next few weeks (in wood tick country), he wanted to make sure we could easily check for wood ticks when they come in from playing outdoors.

But deer ticks? That's another story. They're nearly impossible to see, being about the size of the period at the end of this sentence. And they're the ones that carry Lyme disease.

Fortunately, the upside of the weather that brings out the ticks, is the fact that it also brings us asparagus, lilacs, and apple blossoms.

Barns of NW Wisconsin - Barron County

My favorite barns are usually red, but I love the stone wall of this barn on SS north of Cameron, and the fact that it's built into the hillside. To my eye, this has most of the important features, i.e. a silo, a fence, a nice straight roof, and a field of wildflowers. (Yes, they're dandelions, but when you've seen only white for the past several months, the yellow dandelions look beautiful!) Unfortunately, cows, the major feature, are missing.

You know they're only weeds because you don't want them.

This week the grandkids are here. Lots to do, including working on VBS projects (You're right, it doesn't take normal people this long), going to Sand Creek on one of the warmer days, taking the grandpuppy to the vet for checkup and shots, going on nature walks, attending my weekly Bible study with a great group of friends, cleaning up the backyard, playing games, and if we get a really warm day - picking snails for our garden pond.

York Minster, Interior, Architectural Detail, Tombs - Anglophile Friday

What struck me when I first walked into York Minster is the height. That ceiling is a long way up. The rood screen (below) is stunningly beautiful, and walking through the minster I 'suffered' a definite awesomeness overload.

More ceiling detail. Can you imagine those workmen on scaffolding all those years ago, taking the greatest care to effect this amazing detail! Those people were obviously not in a hurry and were not stopping to text or tweet every few seconds.

I think all our modern technology is conditioning our children to demand instant results - and if they don't get them, to give up and move on. What's happened to focus time and perseverance?

Hope and a Future

I was taking a photo of the old, rusted tricycle, but when I uploaded it yesterday and saw that green leaf of the dandelion, it reminded me of the overwhelming destruction in Oklahoma, and yet the life and hope that still exist and move on and grow.

This is the grandchild we haven't seen since August of last year. :-(

Our daughter attached the above photo to a phone text yesterday. The text read, "Carrot and apple juice popsicles are a hit!

[Henry had said,] 'Orange pockles are sooooooooooooooo nummmmmmmmmmmy!!'"

I returned her text with, 'Good for you! (He looks like an angel.)'

Then, I got a second text: "'Two seconds later, upon finding a few errant shreds of carrot in it,

[Henry had said,] 'Oh no! This pockle is really yukky!'"

Hahahahahaha... Oh, the best laid plans...

Just wanted to say thank you to all of you who sent such thoughtful and caring wishes about Bridger.

It seems there's only one somebody who isn't the least bit sad that he is gone:

That would be:  TUPPENCE - who is happy to suddenly be able to spend evenings in the living room with us. It did take her a couple days to fully trust that Bridger wasn't waiting around some corner. :-) Let's just say, they weren't the best of friends.
