My Wisconsin Neighborhood and a Triple Crown Winner

'...and don't come back!!'

A sassy red winged blackbird that was annoyed with us for enjoying a late-afternoon walk past his territory. He wasn't shy about voicing his opinion.

Good morning, friends. This morning I'm sharing some photos from the weekend. We had a couple long rains in between the sunny days, so the gardens in the area are doing great. We attended a beautiful wedding on Saturday and a great concert at our church on Sunday. In between, we got a couple nice walks in. Farmers are scrambling to plant the last of the crops.

On Fifth Avenue
Poplars, ferns, and a lone horse?
The ferns are especially for Sandra (MadSnapper)

This is the time of year when any fields that aren't already planted are worked from early morning until late at night. Eager to get the soybeans in, presumably. It's way too late for a corn crop.

Our high bush cranberry, or rather, what it will look like in another month or two.
Right now the cedar waxwings are eating the berries leftover from last year's crop.

Cedar waxwings, top, in our cranberry bush
Red winged blackbird, bottom, atop an elm

Irises, including a lovely gift of iris and hosta leaves (great idea!) in a darling sheep glass
from Carla of The River Flowing blog.
She knows I like love sheep! :-)

Way to go, American Pharaoh!!!!!
I am so thrilled with Saturday's Belmont Stakes.
It's about time we have another Triple Crown Winner!

Do you know how long it took me to remember the RIGHT way to spell 'pharaoh'???
What were they thinking.
I guess it can be spelled any way they want. He's one terrific horse!

  1. Wonderful images from your neighborhood. I love the fun lone horse, loud mouthed Redwing Blackbird. And the ferns are pretty. I wish I saw more Waxwings here, they come and go quickly. I was thrilled to see the American Pharaoh won the Triple Crown, 37 years is a long time to go without a winner. Have a happy day and week ahead!

  3. Mornin' Judy: Lots of pretty pictures here this morning. Your bird shots are always wonderful and I can't get enough of the cranberry bush with the red feeder.Around here there are lots of farmers growing crops, too. We just picked up more siding for the mouse-house last week from a saw-mill /soybean and corn growers. Lots of rain here today but that's ok, we need it. What a lovely horse and such a winner. :)

  8. Your flowers and fields are so pretty! We have lots of redwing blackbirds here. They are a little pesky because of their numbers but I still like them. :)

  9. It looks lovely up your way Judy! I agree...congrats on the Triple Crown American Pharoah. We used to live in Louisville, Ky so we keep up with the horses!!

  10. The trill of the red-wing blackbird and the meadow lark always signal that spring is officially here!

Love the iris in the glass - I can almost smell them.

  11. It is such a wonderful time of the year with all the spring planting and gardening going on all around us. i feel sorry for those that live in large cities and don't get to see and enjoy rural life. Your photos are beautiful. Have a wonderful week!

  12. Sounds like the best of weekends!!
Love your photo of the red winged blackbird...I think they're such pretty birds!

  13. Great shots in the neighborhood! You captured the birds well. That was quite the win for American Pharaoh! And yes, I had to try again in the spelling putting the o before the a!! Have a wonderful week!

  15. You do take marvelous photos. I know those birds can be a bit peevish when we enter "THEIR" space. The barn swallows nesting in our porch eaves tend to dive bomb us. So, You love sheep? I have 3 pet sheep.. silly but true.

  16. Our neighborhoods are certainly different and I would love to live in yours and smell all that fresh air and enjoy the open spaces.

  17. Great shots - I really like that first one!

  18. thanks for the wisconsin dosage!

  19. I can hear that red-wing now! Have seen that look many times. The irises are beautiful...I just simply love them.

  20. I believe your rain headed our way Judy, a downpour yesterday and today...but much needed by our farmers. Irises are on the garden club competition tonight and I have one Siberian to show, I've been thinking about planting some bearded varieties again. iris borer ruined quite a few so they all got chucked but there are some nice colour combinations available these days.
My late father would have loved that race, he followed the horses closely and went to the track when his funds allowed.
Thanks for linking to Mosaic Monday.

  21. Judy, I guess once they put the name on the horse it sticks? Anyway it was great to see a horse break a long-standing record and by such a huge margin! The irises are so beautiful.

  22. I was so excited for the Triple Crown!!! And, such a beautiful horse, to boot!

The crops here are nearly ready for harvesting. Sadly, tho, instead of cotton like last year, most fields are with sorghum.

Of course, me being me.....I LOVE the bird photos!!!

  23. Enjoyed your great shots of nature. Some mocking birds around here get pretty loud if you walk by a tree where they have a nest, and often will swoop down close to your head.
Thanks for stopping by. Yes - your explanation of the difference between jam and preserves is correct. :)

  24. Beautiful red berries:) I have some scattered throughout my woods! I watched the race and that is one talented horse! Have a blessed day dear friend, HUGS!

  25. Judy, the flowers are blooming and the birds are singing in your area. That red winged blackbird is a beauty. I see them around here sometimes, but can never get a good picture of it cause the red feathers are often hidden. I love your cranberry bush, what a sight. And the purple irises are so pretty.

Thanks for taking us around your Wisconsin neighborhood. It was a treat for me, and I'd love to see in person someday.

  33. Your photos are great of the cedar waxwings and the red-winged blackbirds. I get a little unglued by dive bombing birds. It was great to have another triple crown winner! Great horse you have there! ♥

  35. Very beautiful photos. The glass from Carla is so sweet.

Our little cat, Ditto, passed away today. He was 9 and was recently diagnosed with cancer of the jaw bone. We sure will miss him.

  36. I agree American Pharoah is an amazing horse...won by a mile showing he deserves the Triple Crown...a good horse and a beauty too! I was screaming through the whole race like I was there....tears of joy as he won!

  37. Aren't blackbirds great defenders of territory?! He looks really angry! We had one attacking us in our canoe once when we were paddling through a swamp. It was a bit tricky to get away from him as the water was thick with green vegetation and we could barely move. Crazy birds! I like seeing all your farmer photos ... reminds me of 'home' :)

  39. I love your pictures! Wisconsin is one of my favorite states -- I came so close to moving there, but my husband-to-be's job opportunity in Waukesha fell through. Now I have your blog to admire the countryside vicariously!

  40. Beautiful farm country! So much beauty in the country. Our farms are so much smaller in my corner. That is one contrary bird!

  42. Beautiful country photos, Judy...and that red-winged blackbird looks pretty mad! Hubby and I have been keeping up with American Pharoah and watched the first two races. He was working this weekend and I forgot it was one and missed it! I was tickled to hear on the news that night that he had taken it all!

  44. Hi Judy,
I am so happy you liked your bouquet and the sheep glass.
I love your gardens. Your home is so lovely and we loved visiting the last few days.

We will do a switch with our iris, you can add yellow and I can add burgundy. :-))

Great photos of our pretty state of Wisconsin and guess who is planning to come to Wisconsin? Bobby Jean!

    Have a great week,
    Carla

  47. I love your Cedar Waxwing photos, they are one of my favorite childhood birds I don't get to see anymore. I love the song of the red-winged and tri-color blackbirds, so fluid. The irises are gorgeous.

  48. There is nothing shy about red winged blackbirds!
And the Triple Crown was exciting (even if it does look as if his name is spelled wrong!)

  54. Really stunning photos, Judy! Love the redwing blackbird and the iris and the views on your walks. Gorgeous cranberry bush! I've seen that on your header and wondered what it was...I didn't know cranberries grew anywhere but in bogs! I don't follow horse racing, but I love it when there's a good story there, and it sounds like there is! Your log horse was cute too.

  55. Great photos! That was a great race, too!

  56. R-W Blackbirds make sure everyone knows, too! Love the stick horse. It's been a long time since we've had a Triple Crown winner.
