Hodpodging Most Patiently

1. What's something that has recently 'tried your patience'?

The long and difficult process of trying to get health care providers to communicate effectively with each other. I have given up on 'quickly.'

2. Do you think patience comes to us naturally or is it something you have to learn as you grow? On a scale of 1-10 generally how patient are you? (1=I blow up at the drop of a hat and 10=I've got all the time in the world).

No, I don't think patience comes naturally. See #1. You learn patience as you grow older (and realize that you're not in control of the universe). I'm not a 1 and I'm not a 10, so that would be somewhere in between. I think that personality and birth order do makes a difference here. I suspect that patience comes sooner to middle children than firstborns or babies of the family. Sometimes, though, it's hard to tell the difference between becoming more patient or simply falling into a state of resignation.

3. Share about a time when you felt like you could fly. Or a time you wished you could fly. Or a time you felt like you were flying.

I've never felt like I could fly, and unlike Mr. C., have never wished I could fly. Can you imagine what it would be like to run into a flock of migrating birds?

As far as feeling like I was flying, when I was a kid I had a recurring dream. I was standing at the top of a very long flight of stairs and jumped off the top step...floating...all...the...way...to ...a...soft...landing... at the bottom. It was a great dream. I loved that dream and hated being awakened from it. My next favorite recurring dream was riding horse across a wide open field without being thrown off. In reality, I got thrown off more than my fair share.

My oft-recurring and not-so-fun dream was of my brother and me seeing Squanto, Tanto, and Samoset (and lots of Hollywood extras) with war paint on their faces, peering into our living room windows and somehow missing the fact that we were escaping out the back door and running to the woods as fast as we could. I know we watched way too many westerns. I never became desensitized to that dream. It scared me every single time.

4. Your favorite song with the word fly in the title or lyrics, or your favorite song that relates to flying in some way?

Fly Away Home - Mary Carpenter Chapin

OR

Let's Go Fly a Kite - Mr. Banks

5. What's in your fall picnic basket and where are we picnicking in your neck of the woods this time of year?

Why we don't have picnics in January

Curry chicken salad with craisins and walnuts, ripple potato chips, McIntosh or Honey Crisp apples, and an assortment of olives and cheese. Where? Anywhere on a maple tree hilltop with beautiful blue skies, crisp fall leaves, and no bugs. It would be nice if it were located above a clean and rocky river.

6.  Carpentry, electrical, plumbing, landscaping...which skill would you most like to possess and how would you put that skill to use today?

Do you mean as a result of hard work and dedication, or do you mean as a result of a miracle? I would like to possess landscaping skills and the ambition to do something with them. Neither is likely to happen.

 Looks like another fence sampler.

7. What's something you think is too expensive to justify buying lately?

Almost anything except books, but lately it would be low-lighting for my hair. My ancestors were long livers, so this could be a very expensive project if I were to keep it up, and it's not like I'm trying to pretend that I'm 20..or 30...or 40... ... ....you get the idea. Doing nothing is always easier and less expensive than doing something.

8. Insert your own random thought here.

I wonder if I would be more ambitious if I weren't a middle child.

I wonder if I'd have better answers if I weren't actually writing this at night.

  3. Enjoyed reading your post. I am a middle child also and patience isn't given at birth, I am still learning.

  4. Judy, I never thought about birth order when it comes to patience. It makes sense. Your photos are fabulous of the foliage. Have a great week.

  5. Mmm, curry chicken salad. Delicious.

My husband is a middle child and while I wouldn't say he's very patient in general, he is way way more patient than his older sister and younger brother. So I think you have something there with the birth order!

  7. What a memory you have for your dreams Judy! I do have a recurring one that i am driving up a huge mountain and I get to the top and the road stops and I am afraid of falling. I am sure a shrink would have a ball with that one. I love your Longaberger basket filled with apples!!

  12. Hi Judy,
I love what is in your picnic basket!! Yummy.
The photos of the pumpkins and rats is awesome. I love the look of the pumpkins. And now you know where all the rats are. All in one place, none of them hiding to scare you. Oh that Mr. C. ;-)

    Have a blessed day,
    Carla

  13. I love your answers. We have a picnic table that looks just like yours (soon)...lol
I do think that probably first born children are more impatient because they are always pushing to get things done-forge ahead...and babies of the family are used to having things handed to them by older siblings...leaving the middle child to just "float" in between. lol

    Great post, Judy- xo Diana

  14. I think middle children are very easy-going, at least that is what I think about my own sister. I am the "baby". Your apples look delicious and I love your fall photos. Have a great week :)

  15. Judy, Of course I love your pictures. You do get out and get some rare ones. :):) The thing that tries my patience (which is getting thinner) is Drs. offices, hospital and insurance....the crazy delay in paperwork. I tell them I could hand deliver faster, pony express would be faster...what's with computers...in this electronic age things are slower. Blessings, xoxo,Susie

  17. I almost chose the Mary Chapin Carpenter song too. Another one that makes me feel wistful. That lavender is gorgeous! One of my favorites! Getting to Provence to see the lavender fields is still on my bucket list.

  18. I love Tuppence sitting there so royally! And the cows - your life looks heavenly, but I know there are problems (1.hip). And I can see why there are no picnics in January!!!

Your answer to #2 made me chuckle - especially this: Sometimes, though, it's hard to tell the difference between becoming more patient or simply falling into a state of resignation.

  22. I thought the cows were singing Stop In the Name of love, i can see it in my head.. number 1 I am with you... I am going through that right now, getting a referral for my pains, to a specialist and staying within our network doctors.

about patience, i have been a 9 my whole life, i was born that way. my dad was a 10, my mother a 1 and my brother a 3..... made for interesting life. in the 9th grade, in home ec class, they forced me to try to sew, midway through the dress, right after i ripped out the zipper for the 3rd time, i took the dress and ripped it right down the middle.... love the apples and all your photos are beautiful

  28. I knew we were kindred spirits! I had the same recurring dream, only it was when I was. In college. I would dream that as I jumped off a bench in front of the dorm, I would begin to float. I miss that dream!

  34. They forgot to give me patience when I was born.

  35. Great answers!~ I am the most impatient person I know...it is just about my worst trait. I'm the oldest too, so not sure how that goes. Having flown in every prop job plane there was from birth to age 18 (military brat) , I have no desire to ever fly again!

  36. I don't think your answers could have been any better...I really enjoyed reading them, enjoyed the pics, got tickled at the caption under the cows...what more could a person want?

  37. What a pretty red bush seen through the white fence. - Wow that was some nightmare if it scared the cat too!
Enjoyed all your pictures, especially those gorgeous fall trees. - Always fun to read your answers to the questions too.

  38. Love reading the quirky questions and your interesting answers.
I'm not sure I'm having more patience as I get older - is there a secret to this...or maybe I'm not old enough yet? LOL I

  40. Beautiful photos, Judy! I just wanted to stop by and say hi while I have a minute. My "minutes" are hard to come by these days with a 4 month old (wild!) puppy and a 2 month old grandson during the day. I love having Ryker here every day and to be able to take care of him, but this is the perfect example of why we have babies when we're young! I consider it a good day if I can get a shower in!

Hope all is well with you and your family!

  41. Lovely photos, Judy. I just love seeing your lavendar in the basket, the apples and the beautiful trees of gold and red. You always give the best answers to these questions--so thoughtful and interesting! Oh and I always get a laugh! ♥

  42. Long livers? What an image that brings to mind. Okay, why am I charmed by the rats? I normally find them disgusting. The pumpkins must be softening their image. I like your idea for an autumn picnic.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Pretty pictures! I love seeing the fall colors.

  44. Judy, great answers! (Especially the one about "is it patience or resignation?") Love the photo of sweet Tuppence!

  45. Did you shine up those pumpkins?
I do not like health care issues. Is that your lavender, it is beautiful. Two great song choices. You picnic basket sounds delicious. Love the Fall colors in the trees. Your right, the hairdresser is very costly these days. Have a nice weekend.
