Valentines! And Burned Cookies??

 I WON A GIVEAWAY!!!

Look what came in the mail from Arlene of Nanaland blog.
A lovely Valentine card and a pair of pretty fingerless gloves.
Aren't they just the perfect Valentine color!!
Thank you, Arlene!
Y'all be sure to stop in at her blog today.

An unexpected Valentine from a dear friend, who talked me into starting my blog back in February of 2010!

There was more to the package, but I forgot to include it in the photo, like the dark chocolate Dove bar which I ate before I had a chance to remember that I could take just a bite and save the rest for later. Who comes up with those dumb theories anyway. Deb makes her own beautiful cards and of course she knows how much I love dogs and the James Herriot stories.Thank you, my friend!

And now on to a couple family Valentines

You might notice that there are two types of Valentine cookies in the collage above: Pink and not so pink. The pink ones were baked in a 375 degree oven for 10 minutes.

The second type is the forgotten in the oven another 4 or-5 minutes after the timer went off slightly darker variety. They needed just ONE MORE MINUTE. But who sets the timer for one additional minute?! It looks like I should have. I'm going to blame it on my cute and distracting helper/decorator, because I walked away and totally forgot about them. Anyway, they were not burned, miraculously (because I bake them on heavy jellyroll pans), but they weren't quite as pretty. On the other hand, they had a much better crispy crunch, so they are my favorite. Crunch is a very important factor in my world. Next time I will probably bake them in a 350 oven for 12+ minutes to get a crunchier cookie without that less-than-desirable color which makes everyone reach for the pinker ones instead. And if they, for some reason, need an additional minute, I will be sure to set the timer.

  1. Hi Judy = Lucky you. Those fingerless gloves are always great as you can change up the colour of the glove underneath for a different look. I just received a pair this winter from a friend, a much better knitter than me, and I love them. And a home-made card is always special. :) Those grands make Valentines Day wonderful, don't they.

  8. adorable chief and helper.. and i like crunchy cookies better.. as long as they taste good i don't mind the color at all. i like my toast crunchy and by bacon crunchy.. congrats on your presents. i got a good laugh over the timer and still leaving it to long. my cooking life is run by timer now and i still mess up. the other day i removed the pot from the low heat burner and left the burner on for an hour.

  11. I could use a pair of fingerless gloves sometimes...LOL I like their color.

I love James Herriot's books...have read them more than once. Probably at least 5 or 6 times. I say they help keep me sane.

  22. A nice blog win Judy and it doesn't surprise me you ate the chocolate before sharing it with us. Anyone that has to hide the chocolate chips.........well, I keep chuckling about that.
We've all overcooked the cookies (and likely many more things) at least once but hey, we're always multi-tasking and these things happen. ;-)
    Happy Valentine's Day!

  26. Oh I adore James Herriot's writing. I am sure that the gathering of dog stories will be a delight. My favorite story is "The Christmas Day Kitten" which also features a couple of basset hounds.

Very glad for you to have learned what makes a nice crunchy cookie! Serendipity is a good thing.

Darling Valentine. No wonder you were distracted!

  29. Congrats on winning Arlene's giveaway!! My Joe says there is no such thing as a bad cookie, including the ones that are a little darker than the others! Fun times!

  30. Oh that blasted extra minute and the timer relationship. I forget every time. It's one area in which I never fail. LOL LOVE the pix and the lovely gifts! I'm sure the cookies all tasted delicious!

  31. What lovely things to have received, I have that James Herriot book, it is good isn't it, there is also a cat one! Happy Valentines! xx

  32. Your little "Fire Chief" Valentine is adorable!

  33. I like crunch, too. Sometimes I set the timer, go into the other room, and ignore it--until I realize why it was set in the first place! I use it too much to clock the laundry, which usually isn't as unforgiving as the oven.

  34. You have an adorable little Valentine there!

I was going to do this with my grands and then came down with a cold and decided it would be a better present to keep my germs away from them.

We are the opposite! I like my sugar cookies soft so the recipe that I have has them at 400 degrees for six minutes exactly and THAT is hard to keep track of, lol..so I've ended up with some crispy ones in my lifetime every season! :)

  35. Good for you! We had valentine fun, too. We were babysitting. Love your family photo.

  36. Cute giveaway, Judy. I was lucky enough to win several giveaways through the years. :) Oh, I can see how the little ones can distract you when baking cookies. These look Yummy to me, even though some of them are a bit brown. Would love one to go with my coffee right now. :)
