Thanks so much, Terri, for providing the Wednesday Medley!

It is all about Halloween!

1. You’re in a horror movie. Are you the final person left, the first to die, the comic relief, the skeptic, the smart one, or the killer?

I'm the final person left. I'm definitely not the killer, I refuse to be the first to die, don't feel in a mood to be comic relief, don't consider myself a skeptic or the smart one, so I'll go with the final person left. That means I'm Hercule Poirot, doesn't it!

Although, I'll have to tell you one trick I've found works pretty well to discover who-dun-it in my British mysteries:  If there's a well-recognized actor in the cast lineup, they're often the killer. Really. It seems they only want the part if they get to be the villain. So that's my theory...

 Hercule Poirot

2. While watching scary movies, are you the person who yells at the characters, the person with their eyes covered the whole time or the person who falls asleep?

Actually, I try to avoid scary movies, except for the myriad British murder mysteries I watch (and really, they're hardly ever scary.)  But last night, I actually heard myself yelling, 'JONES, HURRY!!!' in a Midsomer Murders episode. What is this world coming to.

We played Spot It! and Skip-bo with the grandkids

over the weekend.

3. If you were dared to spend the night in a “haunted house”, would you do it?

Absolutely not. Are you kidding???  When Mr. C. had to be gone overnight for work, and Bridger was still with us, I slept with a shotgun *and* a 124# German Shepherd dog at my side.

 Not my house.
But I did see it over the weekend.
Looks pretty spooky, doesn't it!

4. Favorite horror monster or villain?

I was trying to think of any scary movies I've watched - any at all, and decided to make a list:

  • Misery
  • Don't Say A Word
  • What Lies Beneath (I refuse to watch it a second time.)
  • Sixth Sense
  • The Other
That might be it, except for all the Twilight Zone and Thriller episodes I watched as a teenager.

But as for my favorite villain?  Sean Bean. For sure. He might be a cold-blooded killer, but...can't we overlook the minor details? LOL

5. Favorite horror or Halloween-themed song?  I definitely don't have one. When I looked it up on YouTube and came across 'Best Halloween Songs 2018' I listened to a few bars and decided I didn't even want to hear it. I loved being scared as a kid; I no longer find it fun.

6. Tell us something random about your week.

The end of October and going into November is definitely the Shadowlands, The skies are gray, all the beautiful maple leaves are on the ground, the oaks are no longer brilliant reds but fading fast, the weather is turning cold, but it's not settled into winter yet. December brings us Christmas and January brings us squeaky cold snow and bright blue skies. But November? It's just dull and cold and gray and windy and haunted. Maybe not haunted, but of all the months, November in NW Wisconsin would be the one I'd vote most likely to be haunted - not October.

I've been listening to 'The Everlasting Man' (on YouTube) by G.K. Chesterton, which I've read in the past, but it's fun to listen to this as I'm making dinner or soap or whatnot. From the book,

“Now the best relation to our spiritual home is to be near enough to love it. But the next best is to be far enough away not to hate it. It is the contention of these pages that while the best judge of Christianity is a Christian, the next best judge would be something more like a Confucian. The worst judge of all is the man now most ready with his judgements; the ill-educated Christian turning gradually into the ill-tempered agnostic, entangled in the end of a feud of which he never understood the beginning, blighted with a sort of hereditary boredom with he knows not what, and already weary of hearing what he has never heard.”

At least I try to not do scary . . .
I can tolerate reading scary, more than watching . . .
Not a fan of someone who tries to scare me . . .
Dressing up scary on Halloween would be my last choice . . .
Not sure why Halloween became our “most famous” family time . . .
But it is and I LOVE IT . . .
because everyone comes home, the house is full, busy, loud, soups are made, snacks sweets are ready . . ,
Not much scary going on . . . lotsa of love, stories, fun . . .

  2. I love your tip on how to figure out the villain on a who dun it. I'm not telling the Mister. I want him to think that I am smart. Have a great Halloween, Judy.

  3. I don't like scary movies and I still remember some of the Twilight Zone shows that terrified me. The little girl that disappeared through the wall ... the hitchhiker ... geez, I had enough nightmares in my childhood without adding to them. Your kids and your cats are adorable.

  4. I am the skeptic, it is my middle name, and tht goes for LIFE not just scary movies. the horror flicks don't scare me and the few that I have watched 15 minutes of I spent the time talking to The TV about how dumb the movie was and who would do outside after 8 people had already died... the movies that scare me are the ones with humans as villians.. I did not like twilight zone, but watched a few so I could rant about how dumb they were. I did used to like Inner sanctum on the radio, the one with the squeaking door... many moons ago. love the pic of Jazz and the barefoot guy … I had a screaming nightmare last night, one like I have never had, in it the a giant rattler was biting Big Boy on the nose, I screamed for a long time and bob finally woke me up. that was at 2;30. I have never had a nightmare like that.

  5. My husband really loves the British mysteries too. I like Death in Paradise, but that's the only one I've watched very much.

  6. The quote is interesting and requires more than one reading to begin to grasp its full meaning. I'm not sure I would ever get there. Deep and profound and I'm impressed you can listen to it and do anything else at the same time. Love those pink Crocs especially with her leopard print. Quite the stylish young lady!

  7. Those grandkids are adorable and I love skipbo!!!! I too am not a fan of scary movies and I have never watch British mysteries either. Boring I am - LOL!

  8. Oh yes, I was a big fan of Twilight Zone back in the day. According to today's standards, they don't even come close to being scary. Tell Tommy to stop eating tuna before bed. :D

  9. No scary movies for me either. We can find enough horrors in real life. I haven't even watched every Alfred Hitchcock movie because they looked to scary! (Though have you ever seen his silent movie where the hero goes into an empty house? That one is good!)

Guessing who did it is a must for Agatha Christie movies! I am not good at spotting well-known actors (British or American) so I usually try and decide who Agatha Christie would think was the lest likely to be suspected and then watch for a clue. There is always one clue, question or circumstance that doesn't quite add up.

  12. I don't do horror movies but I do like to watch our detective dramas. Great pics of the grandkids and yes that house does look spooky in your pic but I guess it doesn't usually.

  13. Oh my goodness - first of all I love your photos - as usual.
Now horror and scary movies - like the dark evil ones - FORGET IT.
I won't watch in any way, shape of form.
Years ago I watched the Exorcist - my brother and soon to be hub pushed mt into it - It was awful and I vowed to never watch another and I have not.

I will take a kiddie Halloween.

  14. I'm with you when it comes to being scared, I liked it when I was younger but not at all now. I adore that pink house! Victorian homes have always been my favorite.

  15. The most horrific scene happened moments ago when I flipped the calendar page to November and found a winter scene. I took that down so fast... Now it’s sporting another November that better suits my sensibilities. That Chesterton. Deep thinker.

  16. Judy, was just adoring the photo of Tommy and Smokey--till I read the caption and laughed uproariously sitting here all by myself! I'm not a scary movie fan, but I noticed Misery on your list, and have to admit … I mean, how can you resist Kathy Bates with lines like, "It's called hobbling, Paul."

  19. No scary movies in this house. Ever. Mysteries, yes. I was impressed at how Mr. C. was dressed--looked like summer not November. But maybe he was next to the fire. Sorry November is so dull. We still have color to enjoy and leaves to clean up. And lots of rain which currently I still enjoy (though I could reach my limit.)
