New 'bird' at my feeder,
enjoying a Cranberry Morning.
Before this little thief appeared at the feeder this morning, I noticed all those cranberry skins where the bird seed used to be. I wondered who had put the cranberries there, for birds typically land on the bush and eat the berries there.
Then this little fella ran up the cranberry bush, grabbed a cluster of berries, and carried them to the feeder, where he sat and ate the seed out of each berry, leaving the berry pulp and skin.
I was able to get this shot because he completely ignores us unless we actually go outdoors and make a lot of movement. This photo was taken through the window. He couldn't have cared less that there were only about 2 feet of distance between us.

Another new 'bird.'
This one quickly depleted the supply of bird seed and then
turned to look defiantly at me. See what I mean???
The red squirrels are not nearly as welcome at our feeders because they're so destructive. We need to keep them away so that the juncos and nuthatches and cardinals and chickadees and bluejays can eat.

I'm hoping I get motivated pretty soon to take down the Christmas tree, wrap and store all the ornaments, and clean the house. Maybe one of these really cold days (check out the temperature widget on my sidebar) will also be a good time to sort through papers and books and try to apply a bit of organization to my desk. I may need to build more bookshelves.

I love it. So missed snuggling under my blankie with my hot cuppa and reading blogs.
Today all is back to normal.
Happy New Year.

Awwhhh... but he's such a cute little thief!!!
ReplyDeleteThat's just the cutest thing I've seen in a while. He needed a good place to eat. I don't have Christmas things to put away this year, but I haven't cleaned much at all for two months. Hopefully, I can get caught up on cleaning next week.
ReplyDeleteOh yes, cleaning....now there's an idea!
ReplyDeletei organized to drawers yesterday, took me 2 hours, but i was glad when done. your little bad guy is so cute. they are so destructive, but there is nothing to be done about them. we have a love/hate relationship with ours. and we found out yesterday where my pine cones are going. i had been picking them up and stacking them on the shelf of the cooker. they kept disapearing and finding pieces all over the deck. we watched as Jake went to the stack and removed one and chewed and tore it into shreds. Jake the dog not the squirrel
ReplyDeleteI was wondering how you got so close to get the picture! I guess he was busy eating so he didn't care. :)
ReplyDeleteHappy new year to you. A great way to start the new year...organizing!
I like to see squirrels. There are plenty of grey squirrels here but red squirrels are almost extinct.
ReplyDeleteI suppose he doesn't mind having his photo taken, he's too busy feasting:-)
I hope you are keeping warm in your extremely cold weather...brrr!
Awe little squirrels are just THE cutest things - but they are destructive!
ReplyDeleteYour little thief grabs what he can - it's winter.
ReplyDeleteOh Judy, that 1st image of one of God's creatures it just so precious! I guess I never realized they ate cranberries, but the cranberries in the snow...now that is just stunning! The blend of the red and the white are both soothing and refreshing! Don't feel too badly about the tree...mine is still up too...but I'm thinking today, it might have to come down. Big hugs to you, xoxo PS. stay warm
ReplyDeleteCute post.
ReplyDeleteThose danged red squirrels cause such a mess and our gray squirrels are the same as yours. We need to practically give them a literal push before they move away_LOL
ReplyDeleteWe always think we can outsmart those furry little beasts, but the inevitably win. How inspired that he carried his berries to a more comfortable dining area! I've noticed this year that the squirrels seem much rounder than in the past ... cheeky little buggers, eh, both literally and figuratively!
ReplyDeleteWe had a terrible squirrel problem until we switched to safflower seeds. Now zero squirrels. We just took down the tree and it was terrible but I am glad it's done. Wishing you a blessed year, olive
ReplyDeleteI am always amazed at how healthy and plump the squirrels are "up north". Ours here in Florida are skinny little things! LOL Last summer, we counted 18 squirrels in our front yard, enjoying the acorns from our oak trees.
ReplyDeleteYour photos are so pretty, especially the cranberries!
My tree is up too...sigh....just hate taking it down, and our kitty so loves to sleep underneath it. Because we don't have but four trees that are not pine on the farm, we rarely see squirrels, but both sets of our "towny" parents know all about them. Steve's dad feeds them, but my dad does his dangedest to keep them out of his bird feeders. Happy New Year! (P.S. I have a couple bars of your soap left that became stocking stuffers, and everyone on the receiving end were very happy!) I kept a few back for us :-)
ReplyDeleteThey are pretty nervy, aren't they. I haven't started taking down the decorations yet either. I think I will do it all this weekend.
ReplyDeletestay warm

That little devil. How clever. Very cute. Getting ready to watch the Sugar Bowl, or at least the beginning. Got to go back to work tomorrow so it better be a god game! LOL
ReplyDeleteThe squirrels have been having a feast at my bird feeders also!!
ReplyDeleteHow cute is that! We're excited about the new Downton Abbey show! And your soaps sound amazing! I know they're good!
ReplyDeleteI love that pic of the snow covered cranberries! Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteHa Ha, I love that fella.
ReplyDeleteI'm seeking motivation to get my decorations put away too. I just agreed to host a luncheon here on the 11th so perhaps that will do it?
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year!
happy new year judy!!
ReplyDeleteyour little red friend is so cute...God created beautiful creatures for us to 'enjoy', didn't he? i love your cranberries/snow pic...such a contrast! i hope you have a great 2013...looking forward to more great posts!

So sad they are destructive because he is certainly darling. I can't believe they let you get so close!
ReplyDeleteLove the concept of Downton soaps! How is Matthew supposed to smell?
ReplyDeleteAnd the phrase "cheeky little beggar" reminds me of one of my favorite moves, "The Secret Garden." Warm fuzzies :)

ReplyDeleteThe Matthew fragrance combination is just what one would expect - well, at least it's what I would expect. Check it out and see for yourself. :-) There's no odor of perspiration from wearing that tweed jacket out on the pheasant shoot, btw. :-)
I hit a button and something happened to my comment...let me know if it showed up. Dang it.
