Bits of Life Wednesday

Mr. C. with the boys at Sand Creek Cafe
Notice that they're all looking in different directions. LOL

The house is very quiet this week. I'm missing the two grandsons who stayed with us last week. It was not quiet then, as no house with two young boys in it could be quiet for long.  And any time they're with us for a few days, we take them to Sand Creek for the cafe and for the creek.

Same grandsons, same Mr. C., same country cafe in Sand Creek, WI,
three years ago.

Sand Creek park is a beautiful place with a lovely, sandy (surprise!) creek bed and sparklingly-clear water. They love wading in the water and collecting piles of sea weed. And I know I've mentioned this before, but no one else is ever there. I would think that the neighborhood kids would be playing there all the time, but no.

Switching gears: One of the days while the boys were with us, we spent the afternoon at Hunt Hill Audubon Sanctuary, walking the trails. Those of you who follow me  (@cranberrymorning) on IG have seen most of these photos, but...

Mr. C., blazing the trail, so to speak
on a very rickety bridge

 Pretty lilies

It might look like the older brother is trying to trip his younger brother with that walking stick, but I'm sure that's not the case. What brother would do that?! ;-)

Mr. C. in a moment of reflection

The bog was my favorite part of the whole experience, although we found no bog people. Still, it was a cool experience to step on the squishy bog moss (while hanging on tightly to the railing of the bridge, lest I become another bog casualty).

And here's the pitcher plant. What an interesting plant! I'd never seen one before, and of course it's named that because it holds the rain water.

There were several trails at the park, one of which was the Bear Trail. We walked parts of a few different trails, and this sign was just across the bridge. With as many black bears as we have in NW Wisconsin, I'm not sure why they think it would be fun for people to walk the Bear Trail. I might have named it the  'Seldom Any Bears Trail, Really'  instead. What were they thinking??

 Cooperation
What to do on a hot and muggy day when no one wants to be out in it!
I have several Ravensberger puzzles. They're worth searching for online, because they're a really good quality and all the grandkids (the younger ones) love them!

Another grandson, another puzzle, a couple years ago

So now it's back to just Mr. C. and me
and Tommy & Smokey

We Interrupt Our Regularly-Scheduled Programming...

Grandpa, putting the straps on the tree branch
Supervisors stayed on the ground.

The Wednesday Hodgepodge is on hold until next week,  as Joyce eagerly awaits the birth of their first grandchild.

In the meantime, family was here over the weekend and I've got a ton of photos to show you - of the newest addition to our house - the saucer swing.

This is the best purchase we've made in a long time. This swing, hanging from the branch of our huge maple, gives the kids a great arc and a great view - and with its 400 pound weight capacity, easily holds four grandkids at a time.

When I was pushing the swing, the repeated request was,  'Go higher!  Go higher! ' Their next request was 'Go get Grandpa!! '
Near sundown. Still on the swing.

On Saturday we all piled into the vehicles and drove to nearby Sand Creek (a favorite), because the temp was mid 80s and what else would one want to do but wade in the clear water of Sand Creek. It looks green because it has a plant growing in it, but it's not a slimy plant, and the water is clear with a sandy/rocky bottom. The kids were hunting for pennies. (Miraculously, pennies on the creek bed appeared out of nowhere, which got all the kids into the water. Smart dad.)

In all the times we've been to that creek, we've never encountered other people enjoying it. Where are they on such a beautiful day??  But it was fun to have the entire park to ourselves, and I wonder how many other people actually take advantage of the beautiful creek to go wading. And treasure hunting!

And there were some quite extraordinary rocks in that creek!

Sand Creek is one of the few places I know of that still has its teeter totters.

Next weekend we have a family reunion at our house. Be forewarned.

Hodgpodging A Holiday

I hope everyone had a great Fourth of July, celebrating the good old U.S.A.  On the past weekend, we had family here, so on the actual Fourth, we spent without family and instead walked the Red Cedar Trail in Menomonie. It was a gorgeous day for it!

The following are a few pics from when some of the family was here and we took the kids to Sand Creek, WI, where there's a beautiful, wadable creek (about which I've written in the past.)

Hodgepodge Questions-Volume 312

Click HERE to join Joyce and the Gang

for Hodgepodge Wednesday.

Happy July 4th Hodgepodgers! And if you're joining in from outside the US of A, then happy Tuesday! Here are the questions to this week's Wednesday Hodgepodge. Answer on your own blog then jump back here tomorrow to share answers with all your friends and neighbors.

Also, there's a little something going on with Photo Bucket right now causing my button (and thousands of other bloggers buttons, headers, content, etc ) to look a little funny. Until my IT department aka Daughter1 gets it sorted it's fine to just link to my blog without the button this week.

Here we go-

1. When and where were the best fireworks you've ever seen? Speaking of fireworks...do you know your hot buttons? The things people can say and/or do to set you off? When was the last time someone pushed one of your hot buttons?

Barron, Wisconsin. Because we were there with friends and had lots of popcorn and Twizzlers and the kids were playing games in the school yard. Hot buttons? People who leave their dogs outdoors in HOT or FREEZING weather and who don't provide fresh water for them and don't take them for walks. People who don't scoop their cats' litter boxes every day (or more often). People who tell me I'm obsessive about my pets. LOL  Actually, life has been pretty calm lately, no hot buttons pushed in the recent past. People are getting smarter, I guess. :-) Except for Wisconsin Public Television and Wisconsin Public Radio who seem obsessed with gender identity, fluidity, etc. etc. etc. What is the deal anyway??

And don't they look thrilled that Grandma's taking their picture!

2. Have you hosted any outdoor summer parties this year? Attended any? What makes for a great outdoor party?

When I read this week's Hodgepodge questions, I wondered if this was the week I clue you all in to the fact that I really am a boring person (in case any among you hasn't yet caught on). Parties aren't my thing. Occasionally I'll host a party, but haven't done so in a long time. A great outdoor party is one that is far enough away that I don't have to hear it and one I'm not obligated to attend. On the other hand, I do love visiting with one or two or a few people at a time.

 Tending to the bluegills,
Taking them to the garden pond.

3. What does freedom mean to you?
Freedom means, first and foremost, freedom in King Jesus, who gives me freedom from guilt, shame, and fear, freedom from sin and death. As Lord of the Universe, he lives and reigns today and forever, and I love the freedom that I have to be myself and not have to prove anything to anyone, that I am completely acceptable to God because of Jesus. And I love the joy that freedom brings me every single day.

Secondly, freedom means freedom of thought, freedom of expression, freedom of speech, etc. which are precious and which need to be protected from overzealous legislators who would like to make a law about everything.

Yes, we need to get the lattice installed.

4. July is National Cell Phone Courtesy month...what annoys you most about people's cell phone habits?

Of course, the thing that bothers me the most is talking on a cell phone or texting while driving. The other thing is when I'm in a store and someone is walking around, getting their groceries or whatnot and talking (loudly) on their phones so that everyone is informed of their business.

5. What's your current summer anthem?

Anthem? Is this another trend that I'm not privy to??

6.  Insert your own random thought here.

Over the weekend we played Monopoly with the kids. I'm not the best player because I wait to buy particular properties, such as Piccadilly and Strand and Trafalgar, rather than being strategic about the whole thing. It's why I'm terrible at Scrabble: I'm working at constructing a GREAT word while everyone else is winning because they're putting down boring little four letter words. Sigh.

ANYWAY, that's not what I was going to tell you. This little boy in the photos above wanted to play Monopoly. It ended up being played on parts of two days. He is a real trooper. As you can see in the first frame, he is quite glum about having to pay rent to a greedy, meany landlord and he has no property. He's sure he's going to lose.

The last frame shows a happy boy who is winning, who I think got all of Grandma's Monopolies (yellow and red cards) at the end. He was a delight to play Monopoly with and has an incredible attention span.

Barron County Roads and How They're Named

 Red Cedar River

Happy Friday everyone! Today I'm posting photos I took not far from our house on our way home from Wausau last weekend. All photos were taken in the same general area, which is west of Sand Creek on 1 1/2 Avenue or from Barron Dunn Avenue. Our area is full of natural beauty. It's a wonderful place to visit during the spring, summer, and fall. and the perfect place to visit in the winter if you like depressing darkness, bitter cold, and skiing. :-) But I'll have to admit, even in the winter time, it's beautiful here - mostly if you've got a good fire going in the stove, a hefty stash of popcorn, a stack of books, and dark chocolate. A couple nice big dogs would help too.

With Mr. C's ability to whip up a great morning fry, I sometimes think it would be fun to turn our home into a B&B, except that we'd probably get no takers. Even when people say they want to get out to the countryside for some peace and quiet, they're not usually talking about the very literal peace and quiet that we have here. We could offer good food, beautiful scenery, and lots of good books, but no traffic, no shopping, and no noise.

Since there were a few furrowed brows about the name of the road, 1 1/2 Avenue, in Wednesday's blog post, I thought I'd take a minute to explain how Barron County names its roads. Unlike Dunn County to our south, which seems to have absolutely no rhyme nor reason to their road names, Barron County is laid out on a grid with every street being named according to its distance north/south and east/west of the southwest corner of the [perfectly square] county. If you know this, you need never get lost in Barron County. Everything is measured from that southwest corner.

For example, if the address 320 27th street is where you want to go (I just made that up, but I suspect it actually is someone's address!), that location is 3 1/5 miles north of the south county line and 27 miles east of the west county line - so on a grid it's 27x, 3.20 y.  It makes so much sense.  And if you know your own address and can read the road signs, you can figure out how many miles you are from home. :-) That's always handy.

Of course, once you enter a town, there are names like Oak, Maple, and Wisconsin. But out in the countryside, you'll find numbers.  And now you know the rest of the story!
There were well over a hundred whitetail deer in this cornfield
and the one across the road. By the time we stopped
so I could get the photo, several had already bolted.

 Awwwww.
'Can they see us?? Stand perfectly still and maybe they'll go away.'

 Barron Dunn Avenue
Barron County is on the left;
Dunn County is on the right.

Did I mention that all streets run north and south and all avenues run east and west?

The stop sign is facing Sioux Creek Township

Have a wonderful weekend, everyone!  I'll be gone to Texas for a week, so I won't be blogging, but will probably post the occasional photo on Instagram @cranberrymorning. Please make sure that the springtime app is fully installed in Barron County by the time I return. Thank you. :-)
