Amish School, Goats, Holsteins, and Good Fences

Looking particularly cute

I decided to take the longcut home from Chetek the other day because I wanted to see if there was a chance the goats were back at the Amish cemetery. Two years ago there were goats. Last year there were none. I had missed visiting the goats. (It gets lonely at times up here in the Northwoods.)

The other kids in the cemetery, keeping the grass short.
They were all very excited to see me, and were very vocal.
I love that cute little goat sound.

One of them finally realized he could go around the end
of that fence and come visit me.
(Check out that fella on the left.)

Soon they were all there, but I didn't get a second photo of the group.

Kicking and swishing to keep the nasty flies away

School's out for the summer.

On the way to town

By the way, the car in front of me actually passed this buggy as he was approaching the crest of the hill. There is no way the driver of the car could have seen if there was an oncoming vehicle. I guess he was in a real hurry.

Wisconsin Fences, Farms, and Barns

Right at the edge of one of the three villages that lie equidistant from our home, lies a house hidden behind this monstrous fortress/fence. I didn't see any guard dogs there, and no barbed wire, but it looks intimidating enough at first glance. The vine on the trellis betrays a little friendliness, however, so I'm not too worried.

Quite the front 'entry' with its roof and gigantic ants crawling on the wall to the side of the door.

Painting his fence in the late winter??  Nah, that's just a little trompe l'oeil.  Don't you love it?!  The owner, as seen around town, gives the appearance of abject poverty. Don't let that fool you either. It's a little live 3-dimensional trompe l'oeil, if you ask me. The story is that he sold something in Chicago some years back and made a fortune. He simply chooses to live frugally and have fun with his property.

The neighbor's horses. The wind must be coming from the southeast. They always stand facing away from the wind.

Late winter. Not much to graze on out here.

Good Fences

Decorative Fence

Keeping Horses In

Keeping Other Horses In
and their hay bales, lest they try a quick getaway

Keeping Rabbits OUT!!!
to save my poor cranberry bush

Some fences keep things in, some fences keep things out, and some fences are merely decorative. I like all three.

The Emerald Isle, St. Patrick's Day

Holsteins happy to be back in the pasture

Is Ireland really any more 'emerald' than this? Just look at all this green.  I took these photos in my neighborhood last May. Scenes like these are why I love Wisconsin, especially from May through October.

 Happy Jerseys on Pasture

 Contented Cows

Happy Draft Horses

May 4, 2013 Snowstorm
18"

I hope we don't get a snowstorm again this May. I've not been noticing deer in the fields this winter at all. It's been a tough winter for wildlife. :-(

Happy St. Patrick's Day!
