SEWING DAY

Recently, several of the women from our church got together for a day of sewing. We are making clothes for an orphanage in Haiti which we support. People were everywhere - cutting, sewing, pressing, etc. It was a great time of fun and fellowship with other women, and amazingly, we actually got a lot accomplished! I can get kinda giddy in a crowd, don't ask my friends about this, so I was surprised that I could work in that kind of environment. I'm used to working with just my dogs in the room.

One of our younger seamstresses, who I think should get a job in the costuming department at the Royal Opera House in London! (I wonder if she could get me free tickets with airfare included?  ;-)

Hard at work. Look at those machines! I stick to my commercial and ancient Kenmore, and have never used a serger. Doesn't it look terrifying??!

A day in the 'sweatshop' :-)
Why did that bring up the tune of 'Workin' in a Coal Mine' ??

An example of the finished (or almost finished) product
Both boys and girls clothes are being made.

The wonderful women who fed us
I really felt like I had way too good a time to deserve such an amazing lunch!

Cheesy broccoli soup (completely homemade, so no forthcoming headache!), hummus chicken wraps, and fruit - delicious!

That was only part of the lunch! And when I got home, I tried to replicate that amazing wrap.  I don't think I got it exactly right, but here's what I came up with:

CHICKEN VEGGIE WRAP

Large, 9" or so, flour tortillas
Shredded chicken (I used canned chicken breast)
Hummus (this is my recipe)
4 cloves garlic, minced and then mashed
2 15-oz cans of garbanzo beans, drained (save liquid) and rinsed
     2 T. sesame oil
1/3 c. freshly squeezed lime juice
     1/2 c. garbanzo bean liquid
     1/4 c. olive oil
     1/2 t. salt
     a little cayenne, to taste

Mixed greens
Red bell peppers, thinly sliced
Green peppers, thinly sliced
Onions, thinly sliced
Shredded carrot
Fresh tomatoes (Romas, preferably) diced
Feta cheese
Kalamata olives, sliced

Spread a thick layer of hummus on one side of tortilla, making sure to get it all the way to the edges. Sprinkle on remaining ingredients, then roll tortilla, cut in half, and serve.

I'm not sure what the miracle ingredient was in the wraps she made, for mine didn't taste exactly like the ones we ate at the sewing day, but they were still very good! Definitely good enough to eat the whole thing!

At least in Wisconsin, we're hungry in the wintertime.

Oh, that looks like so much fun! Food, friendship, and performing the mitzvah of helping those Haitian children ... an excellent time! I don't sew, and always wish I could -- work, but fun work ... :)

What a wonderful cause! That sample dress looks soo cute! I know the children will be so excited to recieve some new clothes.

I noticed that the dress was on top of a tube map. Got a little bit of England in that picture :).

The last time I sewed it was to put on several Boy Scout merit badges. After I was done, I realized they were all on upside down. Your project was much more worthwhile and successful :) And that wrap sounds delicious.

The Tube Map is under the glass top of my desk. I like having it there for daydreaming purposes. :-)

You guys are wonderful to make clothes. Sewing clothes makes me want to rip my hair out. What a wonderful service opportunity.

What a great service project. It is always more fun to complete projects with a group of friends. Someone gave me a serger. I was so excited. Took a class and then next time I tried to use it could not figure it out!! I was so bummed.

Judy, that looks like such a fun day. I haven't done any sewing in sooo long--if my husband loses a button, he just drops the garment off at the cleaners these days! Years ago, I made all kinds of clothes. Maybe I'll take it up again someday.

Oh what fun! I've always wanted a serger, perhaps just to collect dust next to my barely used Singer. Maybe someday I'll have more hours in the day.

Omgoodness! Such fun!! I'd be giddy, too, lol!

Mmm, those wraps, definitely a "must try"!

looks like you guys worked up an appetite!
I love hummus, but can't get the husband to even try it. More for me right? Thanks for sharing and linking up to Made From Scratch Tuesday!

This looks like "sew" much fun!!! I love getting together and craftin'. I could use someone to teach me in the sewing department though.
