The Grandpuppy and the Deer

Jazzie, lounging beside the garden pond

Well, the grandpuppy is all caught up on her shots as of last Friday, so that means her people can come get her anytime. It's always fun to have her here, for she's such a sweet dog and a good morale boost for Bridger. They play chase a lot, a game that Misty finds too undignified for her taste.

I zoomed in with my camera to get this shot. If I'd gone outdoors, Jasmine would have jumped up to meet me.

Later in the evening, Jasmine was lying on the window seat when she started barking like crazy. Of course that got the other two dogs going also, although they didn't know WHY they were barking. Kevin and I walked to the window to see what was going on.
Here's what Jazzie was watching:

Standing at the edge of the bean field
The deer was actually eating the leaves off the trees

The deer had been walking along the edge of the road and I was afraid it was going to get hit by a car. We made noise to try to get it to run off the road and into the field.

He finally noticed us.

Kevin and I walked quietly and slowly toward the deer. The photo above was taken just before he decided it would be a good idea to get out of there.

I hate it when deer get close to the road- I'm so scared they'll get hit. We see a lot of them on the way to my mother's house because we take the back roads- most of which are country roads with farms and/or woods on either side.

Jazzie is beautiful!

Jazzie is adorable! And so is the deer by the way. As a So Cal girl I'm still getting used to the deer around here. One jumped out of the woods in my backyard and bolted away from me as I was getting out of my car yesterday. Scared me to death!!!!

Lots of yummy love,

She's a beautiful dog. Reminds me of our Henry who is now over the Rainbow Bridge. Is she a Border Collie mix?

Cute dog! That is one beautiful bleeding heart; I can't tell you how many I have killed. Why can't they survive our winter? Too wet maybe, but others around here have them. Did you know deer can kick? I approached one once in Yosemite and found out; luckily it missed!

Looks like what we would call a button buck. Right now we are dealing with lots of FROGS/TOADS in the road. I would know if I got out the car to actually examine them, but I'm not gonna do that ;-) What a beautiful granddog you have. Is it a St. Bernard?

I'm sorry this is going to be a long comment, but I've got to tell you this. A long time ago, I delivered papers for USA Today (during the very early mornings) and Greg happened to be working nights one week. I was about 4 blocks from home and there was a little deer hobbling along the side of the road. I could see a twig caught in his foot and was getting out of the car to help him. Greg called right as I was getting out and told me to get back in the car. I sat there for an hour and watched the other deer come help him and he got up and left with his buddies! I wanted to help him but Greg told me that he would hurt me worse than I would help him!

What great comments! First, I will answers some questions here and then will try to respond individually to you.

Jazzie is a Border Collie/Springer Spaniel mix, and a super friendly and sweet dog with tons of energy!

In response to Lana, I remember a year when May flies were so thick in the LaCrosse area that cars were sliding on the highway. In the corn fields around here the deer come out in the evenings. We've counted 40-50 in one field!
