NATIONAL OREO COOKIE DAY – March 6

Scroll down to find FIVE cookie recipes.

NATIONAL OREO COOKIE DAY

Be ready to observe by having your glass of milk handy as it is National Oreo Cookie Day.  This day is recognized across the nation each year on March 6th.
The Oreo sandwich cookie is made up of two chocolate disks containing a sweet cream filling and is loved by millions.  Since it’s introduction, the Oreo cookie has become the best-selling cookie in the United States.
The National Biscuit Company (today known as Nabisco) first developed and produced the “Oreo Biscuit” in 1912 at its Chelsea factory in New York City. Today, the block on which the factory was located is known as “Oreo Way”.
  • The name “Oreo” was first trademarked on March 14, 1912.
  • The first Oreo cookies in the United States sold for 25 cents a pound in clear glass topped novelty cans.
  • In 1912, the Oreo Biscuit was renamed to “Oreo Sandwich”.
  • In 1948, the Oreo Sandwich was renamed to “Oreo Creme Sandwich”.
  • William A. Turnier developed the modern-day Oreo design in 1952 to include the Nabisco logo.
  • Nabisco’s principal food scientist, Sam Porcello, developed the modern Oreo cookie filling.
HOW TO OBSERVE
Grab a glass of milk and a handful of Oreos to enjoy and use #NationalOreoCookieDay to post on social media.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Our screen porch has about a foot of snow in it right now.
But when it warms up, it's a great place for coffee and cookies.
and to view that eagle from Monday's post!
and for the eagle to view, but not reach,
Tommy and Smokey.

1.  Are you able to pass by a plate of cookies and not take one or are you a bit of a 'Cookie Monster'?
I'll admit that cookies are the one thing that is hard for me to ignore. I make them seldom, and when I do, I put them in the freezer right away. It helps. For some reason, having to actually open the freezer and take them out is a sort of deterrent. I know, it's weird.
the ones with cream of tartar
not as much sugar these days

My favorite.
2.  Tell us about your favorite cookie. Have your tastes changed since you were a kid?
First of all, I'll tell you that I do NOT like raisins or carob in a cookie. I like a crisp cookie, not a soft cookie. My gluten-free chocolate chip cookies with walnuts is probably my favorite, although (and this goes against the soft cookie statement I just made), I once ate a lemon drop cookie with lemon cream cheese frosting, I think it was. That was delicious. But I could eat way too many of those too fast, so I'll stick with my chocolate chip ones. And yes, my tastes have changed. I now cut any cookie recipe's sugar in half. Everything tastes way too sweet to me. (except for Mike n Ike, but that's another story  - of addiction, which is why I cannot have them around and should never be allowed to go to a movie theater.)
3.  Enquiring minds want to know if you are a dunker and, if so, do you dunk in milk, coffee, or tea?
Definitely not a dunker, unless I'm eating a biscotti, because it wrecks the milk or coffee. I do not want cookie crumbs in my coffee. Tea is already wrecked without a cookie, so that's a moot point. (Sorry, tea lovers, but really. There's a reason the colonists threw the stuff overboard. ;-)
These days I wouldn't drizzle that frosting on top
4.  It is that time of year and they are selling them on every corner and in front of every store!  Do you buy Girl Scout cookies and if you do, which is your favorite?
My favorite Girl Scout cookie, and I rarely but sometimes purchase them, is the thin mint. I don't know why they don't just stick with thin mint and throw the other recipes away. I mean really, doesn't everyone love the thin mint??
 My favorite kitchen utensil
KitchenAid mixer

One of my favorite cookie eaters,
a few years ago
5.  Raw cookie dough.  Yay or Nay?
I can't help eating a little raw cookie dough when making cookies, mostly chocolate chip/walnut cookies, but I try not to let Mr. C. see me. He inherited this myth (among others) that cookie dough will give you worms. If I have worms, they're all happy and love it when I send down additional cookie dough to feed them.
Oh was that stuff good!
6.  Please tell us something random about your week!!
Well, the GOOD NEWS at my house is that we will be putting the house (and barn)  and 10-12 acres of our farm on the market this summer and moving to Wausau. It's very exciting. Our daughter and her two kids will be living with us for the time being. The  house we're purchasing is in the school district where the kids are currently attending, so that is wonderful for them as well.

 Helping Grandpa make salsa
The BAD NEWS is that the grandkids (see pic above) have allergies, and are very allergic to cats, which means we will not be able to take Tommy and Smokey with us. This breaks my heart. As you know, I love these two.  They are such sweet kitties. We are looking for someone who will take both of them because we do not want them separated. As you can see from the many photos I've posted here and on Instagram ( #tommyandsmokey to see all the photos there) they are almost always snuggled together. They must also remain indoor cats. Smokey is a spayed female and Tommy is a neutered male. Tommy is very sociable and Smokey is a little reserved. Tommy loves to eat. Smokey is a dainty lady with a small appetite. They are two years old (remember when their mother appeared at the top of our driveway and gave issue? Story HERE).  Tommy and Smokey are current on their shots. I am looking for someone who will love them and not get them declawed, but will give them a nice home and life. Expensive cat food and chair beside the fire is optional. :-) So please, friends, help me get the word out. These kitties should continue to have a wonderful, loving home.
Yes, these two.

Judy, Couldn't the kids get allergy shots? Just kidding....this breaks my heart for you and your lovey dovey cats. I always enjoyed the pictures of them .They are so sweet. I know someone will take them . It sure looks like you live in Jeep (ep) country. Be safe and stay warm. Blessings to all, xoxo, Susie

I like cookies but cake will always be my downfall.

That is big news. The downsizing begins? or is everything going with you. We used an online auction service to downsize. If you want more information on that email me or comment on my blog.

All your cookies look yummy. I will pin some of those recipes.

OMW my heart is breaking for the cats... so sad... I will pray someone there will take them. I can't believe you are moving from your beautiful home and that view you love so much.. I wish you good luck and much happiness with your move and I wish now for a home for your babies.

Good luck on selling the house... what cute kitties!!! Have a great Wednesday!!

This breaks my heart for you and for your cat babies. You know I would take them in a heart beat if I lived closer and wasn't allergic to cats as well. They will remain my favorites and I pray they find a loving and adoring family with which to live. I am happy for this upcoming move for you if you are, but I will also miss the beautiful seasonal pictures from your front porch. Down sizing can be an exciting adventure and I hope an easy transition for you.

Elizabethd said...

That's a shame, it will be hard to let them go. I hope you can find a home for them together.

Congrats on your big move! That is so exciting. So sorry about the kitties. I know how much you love them!

Oh my all of your cookies look delish. I can't start with Oreos because I can't stop...teehee

~Lavender Dreamer~ said...

You have a lot to look forward to...and to do! I know you are excited about the move but it will be very hard too. I am allergic to cats too. It's not a bad allergy...I just get stopped up so that I can't breathe! But I know things will work out and you'll figure out what's best. It's always a challenge to have it all come together! I wish you the very best my friend. Lots and lots of hugs, Diane

Oh, how I would love to take those two precious cats! Anyone you know heading to Florida? I'm sure you will find them a good home, but I know how heartbreaking it is. Keep us posted!

Thanks for joining the Medley today and sharing so many yummy recipes with us!

That is exciting news for you and I'm sure you'll love having the Grandkids with you although it's going to be a big adjustment for everyone. But.....so sad for your kitties but they are so adorable I'm sure you will find someone who will give them the love and home they need. We have the same issue here - our youngest son developed an allergy after he left home for uni. When he visits his in-laws in the USA he can't actually stay at their house because of their cat. As for the cookies I'll be checking out your recipes but I do love Oreos and I actually LOVE tea and I'm a dunker! How can you possible love so much about the UK but not like tea? Just joking of course.

I will admit that I dislike Oreos. Chocolate chip cookies are a favorite. Best of luck selling the house. I hope it goes quickly.

I am diagnosed "highly allergic to cats" and I live with 4 of them...I am with Susie...have the kids take allergy meds...Hee hee...kidding (kind of)....
That has to be heart breaking!!! I would be so sad...I am praying that you find them a loving home!!
Enjoy the ep!!! HA!
Have a great day!

My son is allergic to cats and lives with two of them. Not that I am suggesting that your grands are not far more important than cats. They are! I will be praying that Tommy and Smokey find a wonderful home. Still it is a bittersweet situation and not easy for you.

I am not confessing anything about raw cookie dough...nope, not going to do it.

Hoping that Tommy and Smokey find a wonderful new home where they will be well loved and appreciated! And so sorry that it's becoming necessary -- although certainly this is going to be an amazing new adventure for you and Mr. C.

All of your cookies look amazing! Especially the ginger snaps. I posted cookie recipes on my blog today, too.

You certainly have a lot on your plate at the moment, Judy. I think you deserve one of your favorite chocolate chip cookies. Moving is a big deal, but I'm sure you will enjoy your daughter and grands living with you in your new place. Tommy and Smokey will certainly make someone very happy when they are adopted. Now, I'll miss the lovely views from your front porch. xo

Man this is not an easy post. First of all i have to go and make copies of your recipes.

Second - you are moving? Well that is a surprise - i hope you sell your home and that you are happy and blessed in your new home.

I am so sorry the cuties are allergy to cats - I am too - but if I had to give up Disco (dog) I don't know what I would do. They are so cute I want to take them, but can't.

I have the same mixer and color.

And my grandson wants a 'ep'!

All your cookies look wonderful and the little cookie monster is a real cutie. Moving!!! How wonderfully exciting, but I am truly sorry for you to have to leave those beautiful cats. I pray you find really good homes for them.

I love cookies too. YUMMO!
I am so sorry to hear about your kitties, but I am glad for you about your move. It will be so nice for all for you to be close to those kids. Loved your answers! Have a nice day!

Your kitties! I've always loved the way those two snuggle. I will pray they get a wonderful home... together!

Raisins and carob are awful in cookies! My mom was on a diet years ago that pretty much eliminated anything good and she made us a batch of "chocolate chip cookies." They were made of whole wheat flour, egg substitute, sugar substitute, I'm sure she used fake butter, too, and carob chips. WORST COOKIES EVER. The dog wouldn't even eat them.

eileeninmd said...

Hello,

Wow, your move sounds exciting. I hope the house sells quickly and the kitties find a new loving home. Chocolate Chip are my favorite cookies, but I do not eat them often. Wishing you a happy day!

Judy, I can't believe this! Though it makes perfect sense to downsize, it's hard to imagine you leaving your cozy abode. And I like cats more than kids, so … :D I'll tweet this for you and hope that you can find a good home for Tommy and Smokey, but are you SURE those kids can't cope?! I envision you giving up the cats for this new living arrangement, then two months in your daughter deciding to do something different. Not to be negative, but … I'm sure it will all work out! (Of course, you know, if this was Lionel and Tuppence we were talking about, I'd *definitely* tell the "human" kids to lump it! :D

Well, I just read this post with mixed feelings. That homeplace of yours is so lovely and the surrounding countryside is beyond beautiful, but I am happy that you will be moving closer to your kiddos! My heart is breaking that you will not be able to take Tommy and Smokey with...I know you would if you could. I know there is someone out there that will give them a happy home. It's hard sometimes to make tough decisions but such is the stuff of life. Will you be living in a rural area when you move?

NanaDiana said...

BIG changes ahead for you, Judy. You will like the Wausau area, I think. I am so sad about having to give up your kitties. I know how much you love them. I am sure someone will adopt both of them and give them a loving home.

My offer still stands for staging...and/or ideas. lol

Have a great night- xo Diana

Very surprised to hear about your moving plans! Sure hope you find a good home for the kitties. (I'd be so tempted if we lived closer and didn't already have a cat who doesn't like competition.) Back in the day when I sold GS cookies, the only choice was sugar cookies that cost 50 cents a box. How times have changed!

Awe Judy, I hate it that you will not be able to take your kitties. Bless your heart. But I am excited for this new adventure in life for you and your sweet family. God sure does have plans for our lives doesn't He? Oh the cookies.....YES, YES, YES. I will pray that all things will work out GREAT and beyond GREAT for you all Judy with this new adventure. Hugs and blessings, Cindy

Oh my word Judy, this breaks my heart, the news about Tommy and Smokey! I know your heart will miss them terribly, and I will pray that they will find a loving home. How wonderful that you will be closer to your daughter and grandchildren, that is really awesome! I know you will miss your beautiful home, but will pray that all this works out somehow for all of you. Prayers and hugs!

I'm sure this all was not an easy decision to make, but you knew the day would come. Congratulations on making it! Now a lot of work ahead but do it like an eating an elephant--one bite at a time. Those precious grands are blessed to live with you two for a time. But I will miss your farm, and Tommy and Smokey! I hope the perfect home comes along for those two cuties who have won a corner of my heart--me a non-cat-lover! Blessings on the Project Move!

Misty eyed again . . .
Oh my, it must be sad for you thinking about missing Tommy & Smokey.
The BEST PLACE ever is with you . . . where or where will they go.
Change can be really difficult for me!

My mother used to make a wonderful Oatmeal Cookie . . .
I need to look for her recipe.
As I remember, they were made in a loaf and she would
slice them off the loaf for baking. When baked . . . crispy as can be!
She always had an extra loaf in the freezer, to share.
Banana Bread loafs in the freezer too. (One tradition of hers that I have continued.)

(Hope this message makes a “crisp quick” zip over to you!)
