Cecil B. Demille Introduces the film, The Ten Commandments

Charleton Heston as Moses in
The Ten Commandments

I read a short but interesting article on American Vision this morning. Here's a short clip of Cecil B. Demille introducing the film, 'The Ten Commandments' when it first came to the theater in 1956. Kevin remembers being at the Majestic Theater in Barron, and remembers that introduction by Cecil B. Demille. Unfortunately, Demille's introduction is not included in the televised version of the movie.

From American Vision:

The official souvenir book produced at the time The Ten Commandments was released expressed DeMille’s understanding of the importance of God’s revealed law:

“The Ten Commandments are not rules to obey as a personal favor to God. They are fundamental principles without which mankind cannot live together. . . . THE TEN COMMANDMENTS are not laws. They are THE LAW. Man has made 32,000,000 laws since they were handed down to Moses on Mount Sinai more than three thousand years ago, but he has never improved on God’s law.”

I encourage you to read the article in its entirety on American Vision.

Those were the good old days when the nation still believed and were guided by God. I miss those days. sandie

Roma Downey and her husband said they made "The Bible" series because their children watched the original 10 commandments and laughed at the old fashioned special effects! Wow, have times changed! Good for them for updating the most amazing and true stories of all time!

But I still like the old version too!

This was fascinating. Thanks for sharing. That was always a favorite movie, and I adore Charlton Heston. He starred in some phenomenal films. Loved seeing what DeMille had to say about it. I love the statement about the TEN COMMANDMENTS not being a "favor to God." Too many people think of them as being a smorgasboard where they can pick and choose what they want.

They are a practical treatise, too, and they are fulfilled in the person of Jesus. He made it possible for us to be forgiven for our transgressing the law. PTL!

Sheila

When I was 10, a beautiful lady became my guardian angel. She took me to see this movie. I started going to church with her and got baptized that year. I will always love this movie. xoxo,Susie

One of my favorite movies! Thank you!

The Ten commandments seem to sum up what makes man civilized. Thumbs up to the tour of Hawes (the dark photos were dramatic!), the cheese, and Wallace and Grommet. Thumbs down to the exceedingly creepy b-day wishes from Google. EEEWW!

That was really powerful. Such a shame that they bleep it out now. I can remember when watching the movie on TV was an anticipated family event when I was growing up. It's too bad the tradition has been lost. Great post!

Thanks for the article. Look forward to the epic Cecil B. DeMille biopic about the visionary director's struggle against vicious rivals and his own temptations to make biblical epics and usher in the Golden Age of Hollywood.

I am not sure how, but I do recall seeing the introduction. And I do remember it being very good. Haven't seen it in awhile, but it was always one of our favorites.

Sorry I haven't seen the film all the way through.

Listened to a sermon in the car today about the 10 commandments as an extension of the law into promises.
