Wisconsin Barns and Good Fences

These were drive-by photos taken with my cell phone. Barns were somewhere just south of Ellsworth, WI or just south of Red Wing, MN. I think it's the same barn in both photos. You would think that I would know for sure, but I was taking photos with both my cellphone and my regular Panasonic camera, both on the way to Rochester and on the way back. It can get confusing, especially since I've not yet taken the time to go through all my photos and nail down locations.

It's only a three-hour drive from our home to Rochester, MN, but it is a beautiful drive, especially once you get near the Mississippi River. The bluffs, THE RIVER, the hills. I'm planning to make that trip again next summer, just because of the gorgeous scenery. There are several places along the river to pull off and enjoy a picnic while watching Old Man River. So it's not just Lake Superior that feels like a geographical anchor, but also that huge Mississippi River. I don't know how else to explain it.

Anyway...in the meantime, Winter's back.

And so am I.

Red barns look great most of the time but especially in the snow. Sounds like a pretty drive to Rochester. Yes, go again and take tons of photos!

I know you didn't ask, but I would have to think, for me at least....it would be so very pretty in the spring or summer. I'm not much for snow in my golden olden age. But the photos, from the warmth of my room right now, are beautiful!!

Incredible photos as drive by's and the snow shots remind me of growing up in Michigan. Love the barn and the fence. Enjoy the season!

Red barns in the snow! With fir trees in the shot too! So so lovely at this merry season!

Judy, I feel that anchoring with large bodies of water, too. Haven't seen that end of the Mississippi River, though. When I was in New Orleans several years ago at a business conference, everyone else was interested in going to the French Quarter at night (which I skipped); and I was interested in going in the opposite direction during the day to look at the river (which they skipped).

The mighty Mississippi is a sight to be seen, and I've never seen it up that far north. I'm sure it is beautiful there too. Your photos of barns and fields and fences makes me long for a farm and the sound of animals (and even the smells!). Makes me a little homesick. Thanks for sharing the beauty with us!

It sounds like a beautiful drive. I have crossed the Mississippi, but I don't remember it well. I imagine it would be a sight to see.

Hi Judy,
I will go with you on that summer trip :-) I totally agree, Old Man River, it so fun. We spent hours at the Lock and Dam No.6 in Trempealeau, Wisconsin a few years ago. We just could not get enough of the barges, the river, the eagles, it was a great time.

Very pretty winter barn/fences. - The red stands out with the white snow.

What is it about a red barn? Just beautiful photos, Judy. The drive sounds lovely and I'm sure it passes by quickly. It's so fun to travel to be with family. We did so much of that for years when the kids were little to see the grandparents. Fun times. I see there is snow up your way. We have yet to get any here. No complaints, though. Deb

You described it perfectly. I can imagine the scenes. Welcome home!

Oh, I do love these. And you sound like you feel about the Mississippi and the Great Lakes like I do...they fascinate me and hold my attention so much more than the ocean. I know most people don't agree with me probably, but give me either one of them any day of the week.

The red barn against the white snow is just beautiful, Judy. Your drive sounds lovely...so much beauty if we have eyes to see. ♥

I like red barns but I've never seen one combined with snow. We haven't seen snow since 1985 or at least enough to count it as snow. Enjoyed your nice blog.

I love barn scenes, and these are very nice. Of course, I love Wisconsin. We live on the IL/WI border, literally. Hugs.

There's just something about a dusting of snow that makes everything even lovlier. :)
