Hodgepodging Up North and in Canterbury

Canterbury Cathedral

1. On a scale of 1-10 how would you rate your sense of direction? 1=can't find my way out of a paper bag and 10=if I've been somewhere once I can find it blindfolded ten years later.

I'd say it's a 10 or close to it. I have a pretty good sense of direction, although I can't promise about the blindfold. :-)  The last time I used a map that I can hold in my hand was today. And yesterday. And the day before that. Not only were we traveling and needed to look at the map, but I tend to look at maps a lot anyway. I need to know where I am and where I'm going - on a daily basis. And even when I don't need to know, I'm curious to know where things are in relation to other things.

When was the last time you looked at/used a map you could hold in your hand? (phones don't count!)
back east, down south, out west, up north

Choose one of these directional expressions and tell us why you chose it.

Back east. I chose it because here in Wisconsin, we don't call it 'back east,' but 'out east.'  Maybe if I were from the East, I'd call it 'back east.' But I've lived 'up north' almost all of my life.

2. Did you do more talking or listening yesterday? Is that typical? Describe your yesterday in one word.

Sometimes I do neither. It's pretty quiet here. My day yesterday in a word: JETLAG.

3. Time, money, water-power-resources, opportunity...which one on the list are you most guilty of wasting? What might you do to change that?

Maybe I'm most guilty of wasting time. I'll try to keep this answer short.

4. Did  your family take regular vacations when you were a kid? Tell us something you remember about a family roadtrip from your own childhood.

We didn't take regular vacations. We were farmers. Dairy farmers risk a lot by going on vacation. They don't know if anyone can actually be trusted to care for the cows properly so they don't come back from vacation to a sick herd. But I do remember a road trip with  my grandparents and parents - to Florida. I've told of this before. I must have been about 10 years old and it was when I learned what 'obnoxious' meant. My grandma used it a lot to describe me and my newly acquired skill of chewing/snapping my bubble gum.

5. If you could grow anything you wanted, what would you grow? Why?

I would grow patience, kindness, and compassion. They don't come naturally to me. I could use them. The world could use them. And I pray about it every. single. day.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

I foolishly thought I could beat jetlag by staying awake 23 hours from the time we left London until we were home again in Wisconsin. And by going to bed at 9:30 PM Monday instead of when I felt desperately tired at 6 PM. I kept busy washing/drying/folding clothes, cleaning the kitchen, taking care of the cats, etc. and finally went to bed at 9:30, but awakened with a fierce caffeine deprivation headache at 2 AM. I was an hour late in getting my morning coffee - on London time.

The first photo of Canterbury Cathedral in this post is from 2015, because this is what the main entrance of the cathedral looks like right now:

It is so good to be home with the sweet kitties again.
It looks like they might have decided that the box just isn't big enough for the two of them. I have a soft blanket on the floor next to the box. They take turns lying in the box.

Good morning, Judy. You never disappoint with your beautiful photos. Jetlag is a pain and the older I get the worse it is to deal with. I can relate, too, with the caffeine headaches. Have a great week and I hope your sleep is totally on track soon.

Hello, I enjoyed your answers and all the wonderful England photos. What a great trip!

Happy Wednesday, enjoy your day!

Patience, kindness, and compassion would make a lovely garden. I pray for those things, too. Your photos are beautiful and I like the prayer alcove. Sweet kitties taking turns. 😊 There's no place like home.

Yes, the world could certainly use patience, kindness, and compassion. I'm so glad you are back from your trip safe and sound. Hope the jetlag is over soon. I know those sweet kitties missed Y'all! Welcome home!

I think it's true you need a day for every hour of change to recover completely. And day two is always the worst! The answers to that last question are fun to read today. People thought in all sorts of directions there. Looks like you had a wonderful trip, but then how could you not? : )

It would be interesting to see how my body would react to transatlantic flight since I get by on so little sleep as a general rule. Thank you for sharing these fabulous photos from your trip. I love the prayer alcoves and the plaque on display. I had to laugh at you #4 answer and I wish I would have thought of your #5...I am also in need of growing that stuff. It looks like you had a wonderful trip...it's always so good to be home, isn't it?

I just loved your photos of England - I know you go just about every year - not sure why other than you just like it. No love it. I get to see things I would never get to see other wise. Sharp!

Hi, Judy!

I'm visiting from "Wednesday Hodgepodge". I enjoyed your photos from your trip to London. I'll never see places like this for myself, so it's super nice to relive other peoples' adventures. The last time we took a vacation was to Maine. We always drive straight through with minimal stops but the on on our return home, we made more stops than usual making our travel almost 24-hours on the road. I slept some but not very well and not enough. I was dead tired by the time we got home but we fought going to sleep too early since the following day, DH had to be at work. It was a lot of fun and today the memories are even more precious. Thanks for sharing your answers and have a good week!

I might have missed it but I didn't see a comment space on the Wed hodgepodge. Just wanted you to know I am a lot like you in regards to several of those answers. lol Hope you get all caught up on your rest today. xo Diana

Seems like they are always working on one side or another on a great cathedral and other beautiful buildings. I enjoyed your hodgepodge and all the great photos from England. Dear and I were at Canterbury Cathedral way back in 1973! Hope you are catching up with your time zone!

Loved those pictures from England. I think I have many of the same from my England trips. I loved your responses....especially the one about being farmers. such an honest answer. Have a great day.

I have SOOO enjoyed seeing all your pictures of your time in England on Instagram...soo pretty! What a wonderful trip. LOVED your answer to number 3! Soo true. I have never experienced jet lag but it does sound like an ordeal. Worth it though. Enjoy the rest of your week!

I don’t travel a lot anymore but I remember when we flew home after spending a month in Scotland. It took a week to get back on schedule! We would wake up at 4:00 in the morning and not be able to go back to sleep. Love your photos of the cathedral!

Glad to have you back! Looking forward to more lovely England photos.

I so enjoyed this Judy, I finally found someone else who chews and snaps their gum! You are so right, farmers don't take vacations. ~smile~ Enjoyed all the photos, I can imagine how hard it is to get back into the groove after visiting all those beautiful places! This happened to me when I came back from my visit to the Holy lands
Blessings, Sue

My sense of direction is terrible, though it has never stopped me from venturing anywhere. I am thankful for Google maps and my Garmin! lol

I've been waiting for more pictures! Loved the Hodgepodge and chuckled at your lesson in what is obnoxious! Welcome home!!

Welcome home, Judy!! Seems like this geography-themed hodgepodge was the perfect one to come home to. :)

(For some crazy reason, I thought of the "Miss South Carolina" video clip that went viral ten-ish years ago. It's because I am visiting blogs late at night when my brain is not reliable. But that clip really is funny.)

I an intrigued with the prayer alcoves. I'd like to know the science behind their soundproof-ness. (See, when it's late, I make up words.)

Your brilliant plan was foiled by the headache of the caffeine-deprived. Too bad. It was such a promising plan.

I liked the “growing patience, kindness, compassion”. . .
and loved the prayer alcoves . . .
Beautiful photos . . .
Hope the jet lag and caffeine headache are in the past . . .

We are home from sour trip to Scotland. Looks like you had a good time in the UK too. That prayer alcove was something I captured at the ruins of an old priory that we visited. Funny that I had it as my first photo to share on my blog yesterday. Still adjusting to the time change - we got home Wednesday evening.

They were still building it the last time I was there too; it'll be nice when it's finished. Is Morelli's still there? - fabulous ice creams...

Judy, you must have missed the kitties terribly. How sweet it is that Tommy and Smokey take turns in the box - I know how cats like a box!
